On Endings
Thinking about Nat's gemlog on endings, and in particular the way in which they write about an instance of knowing something is coming to an end: in Nat's case, a particular kind of freedom, how at the end of 10th grade, there's an understanding the classes will get harder, more serious. That university looms, so grades matter, and money matters, summers no longer an easy time of agreed-upon whatever, but a time for jobs, for preparation. Adulthood beckoning.

Edumacated
I’m sitting here, ostensibly listening to a CLE lecture. CLEs are the continuing education we as lawyers are required to do every year (number of hours varies from state to state) to keep our law licenses current.
Having to do these has evoked a variety of feelings over the years. At first I resented them--I was admitted to the bar during the Great Recession so job prospects were few and far between, and it felt like a little twist of the knife to have to get continuing education on something that I couldn’t get anyone to hire me to do.

zoochory
a spilling beam splitting down my chest warming through me, a slitting prism. not a drop of inky watery gray today just unsullen blue amid wisp. i have more than enough so it spills from hearth to font to your open hands cupping to drink. our thirsts scrape and rattle in our two throats. hoarse and hoarser, we both need that drop of drink. i long to hear that rattle in your throat speak all the names i long to hear. i long to hear that scraping a song from the treetops and the leaves and the sticky backs of your hands. i long to hear your sticky hands get stuck in my fur and uproot my senses of self: impossibly tenacious, unsettling the ageless questions we thought not to ask. your hands are cooler now, still sticky with the mucilaginous sap from my inner rings. i long to hear my fur still clinging to those hands knowing not what to do or how to let go. three furtive glances become burrs in my side, looking for their next fertile fields: the swell of my stomach, tangles of ganglia, and the shady recesses of my gray matter. we both drink deep, your seedpods swelling between my vertebrae, working to break my back even further, to climb my spine in the name of reaching heaven.

Dashes
There’s also the - sign which is ASCII clean and I think of it as a “typewriter dash”. It can be used as a hyphen or as a minus. For programming apps like dc or bc or many programming REPLs, this is what you have to use for them.

Did I write another cron job scheduler?
Sxmo is a Desktop Environment that primarily target embedded devices with not-so-tiny screens we will name here "Smartphones". It is based on a common Linux software stack, and in a more structuring way Tiling Windows Managers (at the moment sway, dwm).

Firewall Rules Etiquette
Firewalls may end up with, for one reason or many thousands of ongoing reasons, a "blacklist" or "violations" table. There are various advantages and drawbacks to blocking naughty IP addresses, even if only temporarily. A particular disadvantage is that your own presumably good addresses may accidentally or otherwise end up in the blacklist.

Re: dashes đź’¨
This always makes me half smile, half grimace. A dash is a dash is a dash. I haven't the slightest interest in differentiating types of dash because I can't see where any confusion would arise. The same applies to curly quotes: totally unnecessary, in my opinion.

Hotlinking Means Other People Get Your Analytics
Today a fairly popular site linked to one of my blog posts. Because I use Open Graph meta tags, they have a preview of the post on their page, like other Social Media sites have as well. What they do differently, though, is to not cache the icon and preview image on their servers. They are linking to those resources on my site, which is called hotlinking.

🖥️ Self Host All The Things
Thanks to the Welsh Government, I have what can best be described as a “Big Fat Pipe” directly to my office. Finland speeds, if not quite Finland prices. It’s been rock-solid since we moved in, late last summer, which got me thinking… Rather than maintaining virtual private servers at Hetzner and Digital Ocean, maybe I can bring everything under my own roof?
