I've watched OpenOffice go from a starving project with no users, to a global phenomenon, and we all ought to thank its current steward for staying the course. Alternatively, Novell's taken innumerable global phenomenon and turned them into starving projects, and signed an intellectual contaminant into its product stream.

Personally, I trust Novell as far as I can throw them, and despite years of proprietary resistance, I give enormous credit to Sun for not only hopping the clue bus, but adding some gas along the way.

After years of Sun's recalcitrant attitude & refusal to relinquish its covetous control of the copyright- & code commit-processes -- in other words, refusal to run OpenOffice.org as an open source project -- it's high time the world looked elsewhere for a reliable & fast-improving alternative office suite solution which -- in addition to being wide open to the commons for contribution -- respects the natural imperative for a true universal document format which is not compromised by unbreakable ties to its application.

Micheal is right; Simon is wrong...morally, practically, on any basis you like.
