Do-No-Evil Saturday – Part III: Zen is Ten, Other Miscellany

Posted in HP, Identity Management, NetWare, Novell at 11:55 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

Nothing major to see here, so most watchers might as well move along

In general, not much has happened for Novell in the past week. The only major event, as we have shown earlier, is the release of the first RC of OpenSUSE 11.0. The financial results are another high note.

Here are some of the ‘leftover news’ that we haven’t yet shared.

NetWare

Some rather obscure product called Veri-Scribe has been released as version 1.2 and it supports Novell’s Netware.

Veri-Scribe II Version 1.2 is fully compatible with the Microsoft Windows(R) Vista(R) operating system, Novell(R) Netware(R), and supports compatibility with a wide variety of legacy audio interfaces.

Identity Management

There is not so much to see here other then repetition of old news about H-P and Novell collaborating on identity and security management. We covered this last week nearer to the time of the initial announcement.

Now, HP and Novell have announced an agreement to facilitate migration of HP Identity Center customers to Novell’s identity and security management solutions. The companies will work on this jointly, HP and Novell will develop migration tools to help their respective services teams automate and ease the transition from HP Identity Center to Novell solutions. In addition, Novell will offer license credit for current HP Identity Center customers – for the first 12 months, Novell is offering full license credit for customers that begin migration to its identity and security management products.

Zen

Novell’s public relations blog marks the ten-year anniversary of Zen.

Ten years ago this week, Novell launched a new product designed to help organizations manage their IT environments and save countless hours and effort — it was known as Z.E.N.works, because it gave IT admins a Zero Effort Networking solution. Today, with more than 40 million ZENworks users worldwide, ZENworks is all grown up and an integral component of Novell’s IT management strategy, with comprehensive offerings from the desktop to the data center.

People

iProvo was mentioned earlier this month and its relevance to us is probably not just the proximity to Novell (Provo vicinity) but also the staffing intersection. In light of the following “unsettling” deal it’s worth keeping an eye open.

Provo Mayor Lewis Billings compares the troubled iProvo network to a young woman wanting a date for the prom

[...]

He worries that the same could happen, with Provo taxpayers footing the bill.
But Broadweave’s principals – former Novell attorney Steve Christensen and Sorensen Capital’s Fraser Bullock – dismiss those concerns.

Bullock, Frankenberg and former Novell executive Ty Mattingly joined Christensen to found Broadweave.
The company’s first test of its business model was Traverse Mountain, a high-end development in north Lehi, near Point of the Mountain.

Blue Coat Systems seems to have just pulled a former Novell senior. Nothing major here, just minor really, but it’s worth keeping such stuff documented for future reference.

Before joining Business Objects, Mr Tolonen served as the CFO and COO of IGN Entertainment, and as CFO and a member of the Office of the President at Novell. He is a past member and chairman of The NASDAQ Issuer Affairs Committee.

That’s all for the Do-No-Evil round.
