schestowitz kentma: got URL? Nov 18 12:22
schestowitz Was it pneumonia? ;-p or Blaster? Nov 18 12:23
kentma not sure – it just came up on News 24;  barts, royal london and one other hospital affected apparently.  It’s reported that systems have been down for 24 hours so far Nov 18 12:23
schestowitz Not surprising. Nov 18 12:25
schestowitz There are many Mac users in London; prepare for some big pressure for change. Nov 18 12:25
schestowitz [not that GNU/Linux are a less vocal group] Nov 18 12:26
kentma true;  I’m waiting for some further confirmation of the story – it doesn’t seem to have hit ceefax or the web sites yet. Nov 18 12:27
kentma Incidentally, real piracy is becoming  a major international issue around Somalia – it’s about time the music and film industries stopped trying to characterise people who make an illicit copy of a CD as akin in some way to murderous kidnappers making ransom demands for £millions. Nov 18 12:30
schestowitz Yes, I’ve been reading about that. I call them Mafiaa now. Nov 18 12:35

schestowitz Linux stole Microsoft’s mascot too. Nov 18 13:41
schestowitz Look at the logo of Mono. Nov 18 13:42
schestowitz Well, Mono is Microsoft’s anyway, so… Nov 18 13:42
_doug got a URL for the mono mascot, or any other examples of MS borrowing the other fellas logo ? Nov 18 13:51

MinceR “They are indeed open source, but they are not licensed by Microsoft to run anywhere but in SLED.” Nov 18 13:55
MinceR don’t people read the OSD anymore? Nov 18 13:56
MinceR 8. License Must Not Be Specific to a Product Nov 18 13:56
schestowitz Specific… define specific. Nov 18 13:56
schestowitz Specific implementation… or patent coverage? GPLv2 loophole.. Nov 18 13:57
schestowitz RonH and SteveB spent some time thinking this through… how to give the finger to their supplier’s movement and get away with it. Nov 18 13:57
MinceR the OSD is not a legal text, it must be interpreted according to its spirit. Nov 18 14:13
schestowitz Microsoft and Novell have no spirit. They have shareholders. Nov 18 14:14
MinceR still, this makes Mono non-open source. Nov 18 14:15
_doug Yahoo CEO Yang to step down .. Nov 18 14:17
_doug http://news.cnet.com/… Nov 18 14:17

schestowitz The Microsoft cronies will take over. Nov 18 14:17
_doug “Yang will resume his position as chief Yahoo” Nov 18 14:17
_doug What’s a “chief Yahoo” :) Nov 18 14:18
schestowitz Sounds like Cheerleader. Yoohoo. Nov 18 14:20
schestowitz Microsoft has already pointed the company with its cronies… executives, board members, etc. He probably got pushed out by them. Nov 18 14:21

schestowitz Using technology for a ‘good’ cause.. killing people..  Grenade camera to aid UK troops < http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/tec… > Nov 18 14:26
MinceR the planet is overpopulated anyway Nov 18 14:26
MinceR the difficult part is choosing whom to kill Nov 18 14:26
schestowitz I don’t agree. Nov 18 14:26
schestowitz I’m in favour of birth control. Death is emotional and atrocious. Nov 18 14:27
MinceR what some people do is atrocious too Nov 18 14:27
MinceR killing them would end the atrocities Nov 18 14:27
schestowitz Does birth control reduce the population in China? Was it effective or are rules ignored? Nov 18 14:27
schestowitz MinceR: the people who do atrocious things are a tiny minority. Nov 18 14:27
schestowitz The vast majority is working class or ‘peasants’. Nov 18 14:28
MinceR still, i’m in favor of killing ballmer, gates, jobs and their partners in crime. Nov 18 14:28
schestowitz Suggesting death (goodness forbid!) is punishing those who are abused. Nov 18 14:28
MinceR they keep wasting valuable oxygen anyway. Nov 18 14:28
schestowitz MinceR: you can’t say that here. Nov 18 14:28
MinceR :) Nov 18 14:28
MinceR sorry. Nov 18 14:28
schestowitz Changing subjects.. Nov 18 14:29
schestowitz I’m reading about Yang now… Nov 18 14:29
schestowitz It has already spread through the channels all morning. He planned it a month ago. Nov 18 14:29
schestowitz [and I can't help recalling all the Microsoft executives leaving to join Yahoo. Yahoo board member Icahn and his 2 board cronies would approve, no? ;-) ] Nov 18 14:30
schestowitz That’s why I hate the US system. It should be hated by all Americans too, but they get told comforting words like “democracy”. It lulls them to sleep. Nov 18 14:31
MinceR funny how the reason for stepping down was said to be his failure to sell to microsoft Nov 18 14:31
MinceR i thought he didn’t want to do that. Nov 18 14:31
schestowitz Intel, which instead of coming to OLPC and asking “how can we help?” went behind the project’s back and schemed to destroy if, as if they pondered, “how can we ruin?” That’s not healthy capitalism. It’s extreme, it’s predatory, it’s bad and it’s destructive. It’s not competition and it only harms the customers. Nov 18 14:31
MinceR capitalism around this planet has long ago stopped being healthy Nov 18 14:31
schestowitz MinceR: he didn’t want to do that. Microsoft had people all around him vexed up, probably even investors who sued (on whose behalf?) Nov 18 14:32
MinceR perhaps the crisis will help motivate governments to fix it Nov 18 14:32
schestowitz They sat on Yahoo for about 7 months and had people so distracted that managers left and projects got derailed that way. Nov 18 14:32
schestowitz The current crisis affects my family very negatively troo. Nov 18 14:33
schestowitz *too Nov 18 14:33
schestowitz People who I speak to lost a lot. They just don’t talk about it openly, just discreetly. Nov 18 14:33
schestowitz Now you know who picks up the bill for NASA missions, ‘war’ in Iraq, tax Microsoft refuses to pay, etc. :-) Nov 18 14:34
schestowitz Microsoft’s downgrade of Vista Capable specs ticked off HP < http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inqu… > Nov 18 14:35
schestowitz “I see from the announcement on the OEM website that the rumor I referred to in my earlier message is indeed true.” Nov 18 14:36
schestowitz “You should understand that for a partner who has made a significant investment in meeting the Vista Capable requirement we find it both disappointing and troubling that you would make such a decision without first consulting HP, your biggest global partner.” Nov 18 14:36
schestowitz “I am beyond being upset here. This was totally mismanaged by Intel and Microsoft. What a mess. Now we have an upset partner, Microsoft destroyed credibility, as well as my own credibility shot.” Nov 18 14:36

schestowitz Alan Lord. I don’t know him much… he’s in UK education thinggies. Nov 18 15:39
neighborlee only people that matters to , are those ignorant of all of this that they can convert,,which equates to immoral behavior..all that which is part of M$, so I guess they should all congratulate themselves ;) Nov 18 15:40
schestowitz They try to convince other people too. Nov 18 15:40
schestowitz Lull them.. Nov 18 15:40
neighborlee and for us its just more e vidence of the corruption and why all this stuff should be avoided..its just more nails in their coffins. Nov 18 15:40
schestowitz It’s good that the press cites us a lot these days. This leads to validation, which makes it hard to opponents of BN to shoot the messenger. They tried. Nov 18 15:41
schestowitz Microsoft does anothing new nasty. Nov 18 15:41
neighborlee yup :) Nov 18 15:41
schestowitz I’m going to write about it later. Nov 18 15:41
schestowitz In short, people escape to Google et al Nov 18 15:41
schestowitz I got a message from my cousin in Florida 2 hours ago. Nov 18 15:41
schestowitz It went like this: Nov 18 15:42
schestowitz “Is it possible to insert a Power Point Presentation on my website? Nov 18 15:42
schestowitz They are becoming more popular lately and some of them are excellent. Nov 18 15:42
schestowitz Mostly they are informational and include tours of cities, natural wonders, Nov 18 15:42
schestowitz or nature and wildlife etc. Nov 18 15:42
schestowitz I have saved several in a folder, awaiting the day I could figure out how to Nov 18 15:42
schestowitz share them with viewers, but I haven’t figured that out yet.” Nov 18 15:42
schestowitz So I pointed him at Google Apps. Nov 18 15:42
schestowitz I wrote: “Have a look at Google Apps Nov 18 15:42
schestowitz http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/busi… Nov 18 15:42
schestowitz Put your presentations there. You can then embed them in the site. Nov 18 15:42
schestowitz You don’t need Microsoft Office anymore. Google Apps is better.” Nov 18 15:42
schestowitz So, in short, as you can see, as people start blogs and all, it’s only natural to do MASHUPS… and you need something that’s Web based to be achievable. Nov 18 15:43
schestowitz Now, here’s the thing. Nov 18 15:43
schestowitz Microsoft knows that people like my cousin can throw their documents at Google Apps and be happy Nov 18 15:43
neighborlee They are indeed open source, but they are not licensed by Microsoft to run anywhere but in SLED. < this is I think where they try to fool people of course but it hasn’t worked. Nov 18 15:43
schestowitz That’s why they made OOXML (among other reasons) Nov 18 15:43
schestowitz OOXML won’t work with Google Apps. Nov 18 15:44
schestowitz And now.. they produce bogus anti-Google Apps studies again… Nov 18 15:44
schestowitz I wrote about this 2 days ago. Nov 18 15:44
neighborlee thats why ive been so adament about this novel thing because its from the same great lovely people behind things like OOXML..I know long ago it was all a major scam. Nov 18 15:44
schestowitz BN’s post about it got cited by ComputerWorld and InformationWeek. Nov 18 15:44
schestowitz http://www.informationweek.com/news/so… http://blogs.computerworld.com/another_day_a… Nov 18 15:45
schestowitz It’s amazing how little traffic ‘big’ sites get. Nov 18 15:45
neighborlee The only thing I dont get , is why fedora takes moonlight off its restricted app list, but mono isn’t listed there ,,any idea on that one ? Nov 18 15:45
schestowitz I see the referral numbers. They are miniscule. Same with Mary Jo Foley’s blog. She cited this post too. Nov 18 15:45
schestowitz You can show your friends in Ubuntu Forums this about Novell (BN in the press): http://www.infoworld.com/article/08… Nov 18 15:46
schestowitz Regarding Fedora, people are still watching. Nov 18 15:46
neighborlee well its obvious..bottom line is as noted here by others is $$$,,people like HEX depend on all this stuff working because he does c# for a living so its not rocket science that they scour forums trying to convince people of mono’s merits ;)) Nov 18 15:47
schestowitz I think the war of words will carry on for quite some time. But BN was never alone. Nov 18 15:47
schestowitz Groklaw was opposing Mono before BN was conceived, IIRC. Nov 18 15:47
schestowitz That is… before Novell signed a patent deal involving Mono. Nov 18 15:47
neighborlee hmm didnt know that. Nov 18 15:47
schestowitz The proponents of Mono try to attribute opposition only to BN Nov 18 15:48
schestowitz That’s bollox. Nov 18 15:48
schestowitz It’s trivialisation of a known issue. Nov 18 15:48
neighborlee yeah well we all know that..but its good talking point for them because it attempts to make those that follow bn look like the proveribal zeals :) Nov 18 15:48
schestowitz Alan has a faker in his blog, claiming to be me and making it seem like I am responsible for everything-mono that’s negative. Nov 18 15:49
neighborlee but it works with some people that dont follow such things for reasons  which are many im sure,,time is a big one for many people , they dont have time to look into all this mess so they just go along … Nov 18 15:49

_doug “companies could face a big intellectual property issue because they are using the software without understanding the IP implications of the licensing language” Nov 18 16:15
_doug Didn’t Microsoft validate Novells Linux ? Nov 18 16:16

schestowitz S.u.S.E. as it was at the time could be invited to sponsors and promote itself, but Novell with S.u.S.E. is like a python with Bambi in its belly and a Godzilla (Microsoft) holding it by the hand. Nov 18 17:37

Shouldn’t you have pushed your brother to use OpenOffice instead of Google Docs? Google Docs is NOT Free Software, it’s proprietary software that Google controls – they even host your data, so it’s worse in some respects than Microsoft Office.

It’s Freeware, but it’s not Free Software.

  3. [Meme] Trying to Appease Provocateurs and Borderline Trolls

GNU/Linux isn’t just a clone of Microsoft Windows and it oughtn’t be a clone of Microsoft Windows, either; some people set themselves up for failure, maybe by intention

  4. Centralised Git Hosting Has a Business Model Which is Hostile Towards Developers' Interests (in Microsoft's Case, It's an Attack on Reciprocal Licensing and Persistent Manipulation)

Spying, censoring, and abusing projects/developers/users are among the perks Microsoft found in GitHub; the E.E.E.-styled takeover is being misused for perception manipulation and even racism, so projects really need to take control of their hosting (outsourcing is risky and very expensive in the long run)

  6. President Biden Wants to Put Microsofter in Charge of the Patent Office, Soon to Penalise Patent Applicants Who Don't Use Microsoft's Proprietary Formats

The tradition of GAFAM or GIAFAM inside the USPTO carries on (e.g. Kappos and Lee; Kappos lobbies for Microsoft and IBM, whereas Lee now works for Amazon/Bezos after a career at Google); it's hard to believe anymore that the USPTO exists to serve innovators rather than aggressive monopolists, shielding their territory by patent threats (lawsuits or worse aggression) and cross-licensing that's akin to a cartel

  7. Microsoft GitHub Exposé — Part VIII — Mr. Graveley's Long Career Serving Microsoft's Agenda (Before Hiring by Microsoft to Work on GitHub's GPL Violations Machine)

Balabhadra (Alex) Graveley was promoting .NET (or Mono) since his young days; his current job at Microsoft is consistent with past harms to GNU/Linux, basically pushing undesirable (except to Microsoft) things to GNU/Linux users; Tomboy used to be the main reason for distro ISOs to include Mono

  11. By 2022 0% of 'News' Coverage About Patents Will Be Actual Journalism (Patent Litigation Sector Has Hijacked the World Wide Web to Disseminate Self-Promotional Misinformation)

Finding news about the EPO is almost impossible because today’s so-called ‘news’ sites are in the pockets of Benoît Battistelli, António Campinos, and their cohorts who turned the EPO into a hub of litigation, not science; this is part of an international (worldwide) problem because financial resources for journalism have run out, and so the vacuum is filled/replaced almost entirely by Public Relations (PR) and marketing

  12. Trying to Appease Those Who Never Liked Free Software or Those Who Blindly Loved All Patent Monopolies to Begin With

It’s crystal clear that trying to appease everyone, all the time, is impossible; in the case of the EPO, for example, we hope that exposing Team Battistelli/Campinos helps raise awareness of the harms of patent maximalism, and when speaking about Free software — whilst occasionally bashing the alternatives (proprietary) — we hope to convince more people to join the “Good Fight”

  17. GNU/Linux is for Freedom and It'll Gain Many Users When (or Where) People Understand What Software (or Computing) Freedom Means

Software that respects people's freedom (and by extension privacy as well) is an alluring proposition; those who choose to try GNU/Linux for the wrong reasons are likely the wrong target audience for advocates

  18. Amid Reports of Microsoft's Competition Crimes in Europe...

European companies are complaining, but they seem to overlook the principal aspect of an imperialistic system with bottomless pockets (almost 30 trillion dollars in debt already; US national debt soared again last month); Microsoft is shielded by a political system with military (“defence”) as bailout budget to help cushion international expansion for data grab and technical leverage, as we've seen in the case of EPO (this is all political, not technical, and should thus be treated as a political/corruption issue)
