Oh, and as far as Ubuntu upgrades are concerned? Totally seamless. I took a computer from 7.10 to 9.04 with no issues.</description>

That said, most Linux distros don&#039;t do a lot better. Ubuntu in-place upgrades in particular are very good at fouling up horribly, in my considerable experience of them. Debian works hard to make in-place upgrades go flawlessly, but Ubuntu hasn&#039;t made this anywhere near sufficiently bulletproof.

There&#039;s saving and restoring your home directory, but that again has variable results if there&#039;s been a KDE or GNOME version upgrade.

The matter requires some serious hackerly thought to fix properly. How come Apple can do it so well?</description>
