Microsoft also “loves the children”… when that suits Microsoft’s bottom line
Summary: An explanation of why Microsoft says it loves this and that; Microsoft lacks the capacity to love or to express empathy as it’s always about self gratification or coercion, nothing else
THE ‘news’ sites that tell you GNU/Linux has 3-4% “market share” tell you nothing about phones or tablets. They also don’t count Chromebooks, whose operating system, ChromeOS, is based on Gentoo GNU/Linux. At the moment “Linux” (if we count Android as such) has more market share than Windows. It has been the case for quite some time and the chart below tells the story:
Graphed form factors/devices by Internet (or Web) usage, over time
Last year we said that "Azure Running GNU/Linux Isn't About 'Love' But About Control" (on the server side GNU/Linux has been very abundantly dominant for quite some time; Microsoft viciously attacked GNU/Linux, trying in vain to prevent this). IIS seems to be dying and Windows Server rapidly becomes a niche product; its target audience is people who can’t seem to cope with anything but Windows (fear of the unknown; unwillingness to learn new things). Windows has a massive Total Cost of Ownership [sic] and Microsoft can barely even patch it anymore (without breaking it).
“IIS seems to be dying and Windows Server rapidly becomes a niche product; its target audience is people who can’t seem to cope with anything but Windows (fear of the unknown; unwillingness to learn new things).”I think it’s essential that we all understand why Microsoft says it “loves Linux”; it speaks from a position of weakness and it’s hoping to somehow control GNU/Linux. The GitHub takeover was part of it. Microsoft believes it can miraculously cause people to rehost in Azure and use Visual Studio, C# etc. It even throws money at it. But at the same time Microsoft lays off a lot of staff, perhaps seeing the writings on the wall.
Let’s be patient and not fall into Microsoft’s traps. As for GitHub, it generates massive losses. The sole business model is control. It's 'farming' people. █
