Data Point: GNU/Linux Share in Desktops/Laptops Nearly Tripled in the Past Decade, Peaking This Past Month (All-Time High)

“There's a lot of Linux out there -- much more than Microsoft generally signals publicly -- and their customers are using it...”

--Paul DeGroot, a Directions On Microsoft analyst

Summary: Contrary to what some publishers try to tell us, GNU/Linux is still growing and mostly at the expense of Windows

IT has been getting very cold here again (almost minus five, on the centigrade scale, i.e. a lot lower than usual) and I'm losing my voice again. So pardon my sipping of tea throughout this video. It's a priority to keep producing regardless of side factors, including illness (last month).

"This is probably noteworthy as mainstream media, deep in the pockets of companies such as Apple and Microsoft, won't entertain such observations."The video speaks of GNU/Linux market share on desktops/laptops, Android and Chrome OS aside (it's a lot higher if those too are counted). Anyone can download the data from the site in question or use this copy (granted, however, just like the Steam gamers' survey, this one does not count privacy-conscious or freedom-aware users) and look at prior charts from the same source. We use that as a rough reference to assess some trends, especially now that there are lock-downs.

GNU/Linux market 2021

The main takeaway or the key point is that since 2009 (earliest available data point) GNU/Linux market share grew a great deal and based on this one survey/source it is now at a new all-time high (higher than in 2015). This is probably noteworthy as mainstream media, deep in the pockets of companies such as Apple and Microsoft, won't entertain such observations. There's nothing to be gained (financially) from such stories.
