Bonum Certa Men Certa

The Command Line for Weather and Football Scores, Among Other Stuff

Video download link

Summary: A lot of stuff can be done from the command line and productivity (not to mention privacy) enhanced by automation and scripting over the Web (or even Gemini, as we shall show in a future video)

THE command-line interface (CLI) might seem "retro" or "brutalist" or "for ricers", but there are many practical benefits when everything is text or a file or an object that can be parsed, piped, saved, or processed in some fashion. It's the UNIX philosophy, which GNU also adheres to (unlike some IBM stuff, which treats POSIX like POS).

"We're going to explain how to make use of gemini:// from the command line (not interactive mode, not ncurses either)."In the video above I mention a couple of examples of ways I use the command line to present information of use, without all the spying or the annoying ads, never mind distracting stuff like names and photos. Just the raw data. In real time...

ChainTo better manage the placement of windows (with command explained here) I use tiling window management mode in Xfce and in KDE notifications can be used to highlight events of interest, even with sounds.

In a future part we'll explain how pages too (e.g. capsules) can be easily accessed from the command line and processed for one's convenience. We're going to explain how to make use of gemini:// from the command line (not interactive mode, not ncurses either). It is probably a subject for some future video and some clients that help achieve this were covered here earlier this month.
