Microsoft Lays Off Edge Developers, Edge Market Share Falls, Media Starts Making Noise About Edge Vapourware, and Microsoft Limits Its Overhyped Vapourware to Edge users

Microsoft Edge layoffs

Summary: Microsoft’s overhyped and proprietary, password-stealing copycat of Chrome is losing market share (down about 5% this month) while its developers are being laid off (the media has helped distract from that with loads of puff pieces); in an effort to entice people to try the password-stealing malware it is limiting access to its vapourware (you must download Edge to use it, see below)

Only for Edge

German UPCA Ratification Was Expected, But It Does Nothing to Resolve Brexit (UK Cannot Ratify), So Unified Patent Court (UPC) Remains Illegal and Unconstitutional, Violating Several Conventions and Harming Europe’s Image, Economy, Access to Justice

Posted in Courtroom, Deception, Europe, Patents at 9:27 pm by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

The undemocratic patent conspiracy (UPC): We'll just call it something misleading

Summary: The Unified Patent Court Agreement (UPCA) was ratified in Germany, but noboby expected Germany not to ratify (in fact it happened very late after several delays) and the signature of the UK is still required, but since the UK is no longer in the EU it is unable to do so, which means that any efforts to start the Unified Patent Court (UPC) would be illegal and would be legally challenged in high courts while the EPO has several of its own crises, including a collapse in patent numbers and patent quality

Some people have asked us in IRC — and even over E-mail — about the EPO‘s statement as well as cheerleading from Team UPC (already in Daily Links).

They basically pretend that a German ratification means that the UPC is about to start, but nothing could be further from the truth. The original expectation was German ratification last year, but this did not happen. And the German ratification is a bit of a red herring, though one that’s wildly spun by the lying lobbyists, including António Campinos and Benoît Battistelli‘s cronies.

We’ll say a lot more about it in the coming days as European software patents are at stake.

Twitter Accelerates Its Fall

Posted in Deception at 9:20 pm by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

Summary: Owing to truly misguided and self-harming moves, Twitter is circling down the drain; in 2023 it seems safe to assume many people will leave Twitter (not enough will join; it’s perceived to be undesirable and “uncool”) and some will delete their accounts too

GNU/Linux usage is growing and expanding in scope (the economic downturn hurts Windows), the Web is shrinking (many people give up on their Web sites), and this past weekend was spent tidying up RSS feeds — there are over 1,000 of them which we relied on!

We feel bad for people who relied mostly on their Twitter account!

Twitter is not (and never was) a substitute for RSS feeds.

One thing the mainstream media doesn’t fail to mention is the demise of Twitter. A lot of blame gets thrown/pushed Elon Musk’s way — not that he does not deserve it! The demise of the company will be accelerated further, as size erosion and losses will increase. The latest in this melodrama is, several more offices of Twitter are being shut down, an API may soon cease to exist (that means fewer users), Musk is turning the site into his personal firehose (boosting everything he says at other people’s expense), 2FA is phased out unless one pays, and there are all sorts of other scandals/blunders.

It seems likely that by the end of this year Twitter will be a mere shadow of its former self. Remember Yahoo? A lot of what we said about Twitter a year ago turned out to be true, so the feeling of vindication seems justified.

The Shape of the World Wide Web Is Really Bad and It Won’t Improve in 2023

Posted in Protocol, Servers at 8:38 pm by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

WWW sites

Summary: According to this latest “Web Server Survey” by Netcraft, Microsoft is down sharply on the Web, but the Web as a whole keeps getting smaller as many sites go offline; we need to react to that trend

THE number of sites which become unreachable is growing; we assume economic factors play a role (people become hesitant to pay for domains and hosting bills). Hours ago an associate sent us a list of “sites missing or replaced by cybersquatters” — mostly sites covering GNU/Linux*. The EPO‘s blog (blog.epo.org) has gone offline too! The EPO is not interested in that anymore.

“This past weekend we spent a great deal of time tackling this problem, which had become a sort of ‘technical debt’ (for years already).”The World Wide Web is rotting away. Many sites go offline, some get hijacked by cybersquatters, and our lists of RSS feeds (we have over 1,000 that we follow) are going out of date. This past weekend we spent a great deal of time tackling this problem, which had become a sort of ‘technical debt’ (for years already).

So what’s in store?

Well, we expect our Daily Links to be far more extensive in years to come. The scope and frequency of blogging will remain the same, but we de-prioritised that in recent days because of much-needed housekeeping with feeds. We might have a lot more to say about this in days to come, but the shape of the Web generally isn’t good. Not promising, not encouraging. The only way is down. With Twitter and Facebook now openly admitting they want their users to pay monthly subscription fees (more on that shortly, in the next batch Daily Links), it’s not hard to see where this is going.
