[19:06] schestowitz[TR2] BSDNow had an episode a long time ago about their infrastructure at one point. While their interviews are nearly always done on-site at conferences, they eventually moved from video to audio only for their weekly shows, with one track per participant. The reason being for the move to audio only, aside from saving on bandwidth, was that the hosts were on different continents and difference in network latencies made editing a n [19:06] schestowitz[TR2] ightmare as some hosts end up talking over the others. Editing just audio is much faster and easier. [19:06] schestowitz[TR2] Some of the effects of high network latency can be mitigated by the all the participant being aware of and accounting for the latency and allowing for a much longer silence after another finishes before talking, so as to avoid talking over each other as one of them was wont to do. I think a little of that might be happening with the Cybershow's audio. [19:06] schestowitz[TR2] Also, the lossy compression artifacts are cumulative in a multiplicative way not additive. So if one or two participants are remote, their sound is going to be dreadful by the time the final 'MP3' is produced. MP3 might be free of software patents at this point but it is certainly not free of damage from lossy compression. Even high-budget, propaganda shows like Risky Business are affected. Compression artifacts affect some [19:06] schestowitz[TR2] listeners far worse than others. [19:06] schestowitz[TR2] Anyway, great shows with excellent topics and analyses. The blog posts are great too but a bit hard to find from the main page.
