Techrights-secRPi4 does boot from USB, the question is does it need changing settings firstJan 17 12:01
Techrights-secprobably not.  The RP3B+ also boots from USB.  Jan 17 12:01
schestowitz-TRI have not attached a keyboard, but would I ned to access soime boot menu?Jan 17 12:02
Techrights-secIf settings are changed, it happens via raspi-config.  So in the worst caseJan 17 12:02

schestowitz-TRoh, dear, so I mighr even need to buy a card, install an OS, just to tell the system to boot from USB?Jan 17 12:03

schestowitz-TRdoes it mean it checks both USB and SD?Jan 17 12:09
Techrights-secit checks the SD first, by default, so the card has to be removedJan 17 12:14
Techrights-secto test the USB boot.  if it boots from USB then raspi-config can be usedJan 17 12:14

activelowwithout an appropriate filesystem (nilfs2, f2fs) failure of microsd is guaranteed; question is not IF these fail, question is how quickly those failJan 17 12:42
schestowitz-TRi wondr if it is time to move ipfs to a datacentre tooJan 17 12:42
schestowitz-TRfor bandwidthJan 17 12:43
activelowprobably not, create regular backups, replace the sdcard, and use an appropriate filesystemJan 17 12:43
schestowitz-TRnot USB|?Jan 17 12:43
activelowdepends, USB contains "flash memory" too, which is prone to write amplification, depends on the controllerJan 17 12:44
activelowUSB complicates things; microsd "flash memory" is cheap, ~4.5Euros for 16GiB Verbatim brand, which lasts a while with an approprieate file systemJan 17 12:45
schestowitz-TRmaybe get a microsd adapter?Jan 17 12:46
schestowitz-TRto see if I can repair it from a laptop with fsck?Jan 17 12:46
schestowitz-TRand also buy a spare microsd?Jan 17 12:46
activelowi had to dispose *many* microsd some time ago; for a yet unknown reason i might add, because these weren't stressed with many writesJan 17 12:46
schestowitz-TRi would need an adapter for it regardless to write the OSJan 17 12:46

psydroid4I've been running like this for a year nowJan 17 12:50
schestowitz-TRactivelow cautions that this too has a sensitivity to write-intensive usageJan 17 12:50
schestowitz-TRmaybe i will get microsd, adapter, and also usbJan 17 12:50
psydroid4what is important with flash media is to not fill them up completely and also to set things up so as to reduce writesJan 17 12:51
schestowitz-TRthanks, will go buyu things nowJan 17 12:52
psydroid4you can use "noatime" and "nodiratime" as mount optionsJan 17 12:53

schestowitzThe Raspi broke down. Actually, the storage went all bad. After spending ours trying to salvage it (and getting a recent enough backup) I went to the store, bought a bunch of things (USB stick, adapter, new MicroSD) and worked to recover IPFS, Gemini, IRC and loads of other things running on this machine. Recovery is still work in progress, but Gemini is generally back now. I've long dreaded the moment of breakdown; MicroSD cards don't last long Jan 17 21:53
