[05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > Im the president and founder of LibreTech Collective at Georgia Tech - the worlds first college free software and hardware student club! [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] I hope your collective got some new interest. [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > I mainly wanted to say thank you for absolutely making my night. This [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > was genuinely one of the best articles Ive read in a long time. For [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > context, the official venue capacity is around 380 people - the largest [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > room we could reserve as a student organization without incurring [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > additional university fees. After speaking with RMS by phone, we [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > confirmed that this will be his first talk at Georgia Tech and his first [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > talk at a U.S. college since 2018. [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] It was a success. All the press coverage was positive. [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > The event is funded by the College of Computing as well as the ANAK [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > Society - Georgia Techs campus secret society, whose public alumni [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > include figures such as Jimmy Carter and over a dozen NASA astronauts. [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > The state of Georgia has laws designed to curb social control media [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > and cancel culture, including strong free-speech protections for student [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > organizations like ours [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > . To our genuine surprise, when we spoke with the Dean of the College of Computing, we learned that he is a lifelong Emacs user - he immediately knew exactly who RMS was and fully appreciated the value that bringing him to Georgia Tech provides. [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] My greetings and gratitude to all those involved. Nobody interrupted him, except Windows (IIRC) making it hard to play his old TED talk. [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > Interestingly, this entire event traces back to about a year ago, when I [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > first reached out to RMS to ask for feedback on a free AI and machine [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > learning textbook authored by my research advisor and me for a course at [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > GT . To my amazement, he [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > replied within a week, offering detailed critiques that we incorporated [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > into subsequent editions of the book! [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > Once the event concludes, I will absolutely send you the videos. Well [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > be hosting them on our own servers (with zero nonfree JavaScript), [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > alongside YouTube mirrors for convenience and sharing. Weve also built [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > a website dedicated to showcasing libre hardware and software projects [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > at Georgia Tech - feel free to visit https://LibreLinker.us [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > to see our ongoing work. [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > In the meantime, please dont hesitate to reach out if you have any [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > questions. It was truly an honor to be featured in the article! [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] > Best regards, and Happy New Year, [05:28] schestowitz[TR2] I was happy to see many people views the talk itself.
