[03:07]	schestowitz[TR3]	Microsoft is laying off nearly 9,000 employees for the second time this year. The Redmond-based tech giant says the cuts are part of a broader strategy to streamline operations, reduce management layers and boost efficiency.
[03:07]	schestowitz[TR3]	These layoffs affect multiple divisions globally, including Xbox and other creative teams. While Microsoft says this represents about 4 percent of its workforce, many affected employees are voicing frustration on social media.

One anonymous employee described a team meeting labeled FY26 Business Strategy where they were informed that while the team would remain intact, their manager was being let go on the spot. Many of my peers got similar calls and entire teams were fired in bulk on group calls, the employee said in a

These cuts make no sense. Theyre letting go of a lot of good people who helped produce record results over the past few years.

I think its the end of the old Microsoft culture that has kept me here for more than a decade. Not liking the Amazon-style cutthroat ways were taking on, and I dont care if I get fired for saying so.

I had a colleague who gave well over a decade of effort, only to be dismissed coldly. Meanwhile, shareholders get giddy, and c-suites get bonuses. This needs to end.

[18:32]	schestowitz[TR3]	Microsoft's latest round of layoffs has triggered an outpouring of emotion from inside and outside the company, with at least one former staffer asking: "How many billions must be burned in the AI furnace before this stops?"
[18:32]	schestowitz[TR3]	To be clear, Microsoft has not stated that the latest round of cuts is anything to do with its AI obsession. However, axing more than 9,000 from the workforce is an interesting approach for a business that insists that implementing Copilot tech means customers can boost productivity "rather than cutting headcount."
[18:32]	schestowitz[TR3]	Former Microsoft staffer Ned Pyle summed up the feelings of many with a simple question on the Bluesky social media platform: "jfc again?"

[18:32]	schestowitz[TR3]	Pyle, a former principal program manager at Microsoft and now Enterprise Storage Officer at Tuxera, is famous for his efforts to eliminate the outdated and insecure SMBv1 protocol.
[18:32]	schestowitz[TR3]	Current Microsoft staffers have also been left aghast at the latest bloodletting. Veteran Microsoft engineer Larry Osterman wrote: "I know some folks in Xbox who are terrified ... We think our team is likely safe after a 10 percent haircut last time around, but it's scary."
[18:32]	schestowitz[TR3]	Those Xbox folk were right to be terrified. According to Bloomberg, the company's King division, which makes Candy Crush, is cutting 10 percent of its staff. Games such as Perfect Dark and Everwild have been cancelled, and the studio behind Forza Motorsport is also facing staff reductions.

[18:32]	schestowitz[TR3]	Cybersecurity expert and slayer of the WannaCry malware Marcus Hutchins remarked: "Yet more companies laying off employees not because AI is replacing them, but because they need more money to fund their AI. I can't remember the last time I saw sunk cost fallacy at this scale."
