[08:38] schestowitz[TR2] Wayland developers and advocates have claimed, for many years, that Wayland is faster (with lower latency) and more efficient than X11. [08:38] schestowitz[TR2] Nvidia has conducted research into that question and determined that [08:38] schestowitz[TR2] Wayland does NOT provide lower latency than existing X11 servers. [08:38] schestowitz[TR2] This shows that Wayland has failed at one of its core goals (to remove architectural bottlenecks, providing improved performance over X11) a goal which Wayland has been working on for over 18 years without success. [08:38] schestowitz[TR2] In other words: [08:38] schestowitz[TR2] - Wayland uses more RAM than X11. [08:38] schestowitz[TR2] - Wayland is missing significant features of X11. [08:38] schestowitz[TR2] - Wayland is no faster than X11. [08:38] schestowitz[TR2] It will be interesting to see how Wayland advocates spin this." ● Oct 05 [14:01] *psydruid (~psydruid@jevhxkzmtrbww.irc) has left #techbytes [14:19] *psydruid (~psydruid@jevhxkzmtrbww.irc) has joined #techbytes ● Oct 05 [16:17] *psydruid (~psydruid@jevhxkzmtrbww.irc) has left #techbytes [16:51] *psydruid (~psydruid@jevhxkzmtrbww.irc) has joined #techbytes ● Oct 05 [20:32] schestowitz[TR2] https://www.thelayoff.com/t/1m448v2qj [20:32] -TechBytesBot/#techbytes- ( status 403 @ https://www.thelayoff.com/t/1m448v2qj ) [20:33] schestowitz[TR2] " [20:33] schestowitz[TR2] IBM has product problems replacing CEO will not help [20:33] schestowitz[TR2] Changing IBMs CEO alone will not fix its underlying product problem: customers need compelling reasons to chooseand keep paying forits technology. Recent acquisition Hashicoprp Terraform faces OpenTofu, and IBMs software must justify its additional cost against cloud-native alternatives. In my view, IBM Bobs enterprise proposition pales beside Claude Code using Claude models through Amazon Bedrock, supplemented by Ma [20:33] schestowitz[TR2] rtin AI for easier token budgeting, prompt and plugin libraries, and usage leaderboards. That combination addresses both developer productivity and enterprise adoption; Bob must demonstrate a compelling advantage beyond access to models that IBM itself sources from providers such as Anthropic. A leadership change cannot substitute for differentiated products and clear customer value. The board should seriously explore selling IBM w [20:33] schestowitz[TR2] hile its enterprise relationships and established assets still command substantial value, rather than asking shareholders to finance another turnaround promise. Everything since has either been an acquisition or as another poster states a CS101 type weekend project. You're doing the right thing to coast. I made some efforts to improve things and was RAed, likely as a result. Not that I was sad to be out of that shithole, but I had to scramble to get my finances in order. Be prepared. [20:33] schestowitz[TR2] During my career at IBM, STSMs, DEs asked us to stop trying to work on any challenging solution. Every time, we get a customer request to deliver a good solution, they perfect excuses to reject it. I was told, they do not want to be bothered with "just in case" there is an issue and they have to do real work. [20:33] schestowitz[TR2] Customers moved one by one from IBM offerings. [20:33] schestowitz[TR2] Now, I am coasting (doing nothing) and waiting for a package to retirement. [20:33] schestowitz[TR2] The younger generation is out of luck. They use IBM products because they are locked in. They really should work to unshackle themselves. Stop writing COBOL. Stop investing in RedHat stuff forced onto the platform. Get off of IMS. Use a real AI vendor. The products were not the simplest or easiest to use, but they were powerful, reliable and versatile. The tendency of releasing incomplete (disguised as MVPs) half baked toys, ki-led IBM reputation. The software products are not suitable for the enterprise user and pale in front of the multitude of options available for more general users.
