[02:24] schestowitz[TR2] "Just one addition to your storyline (which is great BTW).
[02:24] schestowitz[TR2] Buy a company for which you pay a whole load of cash, have no idea how to monetize it, cash the cow until it's dry, then claim victory because you said the investment paid for itself, layoff their employees, the remaining ones are left just for support and become an obscure team that slowly nobody remembers it exists, ignore the fact that you said you had an entire hybrid cloud strategy (for example) that will conquer the world, an
[02:24] schestowitz[TR2] d move on to the next thing.... You show the world how you can multitask and talk about AI BS (oh, management is sooo gooooood). hire some consultants (McKinsey is the preference) and pay them a lot of money to figure out what to talk about next .. oh, the power of QUANTUM things...!!!"
[02:25] schestowitz[TR2] "
[02:25] schestowitz[TR2] OK, so I read the article. What I got out of it is that IBM's role in "the marketplace" will be that of a plumbing supply company. They'll sell specialized software components and consulting to the market, but not so much hardware (assuming that they exit manufacturing entirely). From reading the forum commentary, their customers will be mostly Fortune 1000 companies, with everyone else being relegated to industry "partners".
[02:25] schestowitz[TR2] While I see a significant role for IBM in this scenario, I do NOT see the "all-important, absolutely necessary" role that IBM once played in this world. IBM is just another vendor...no more, no less. Fortune 1000 customers can play with IBM if they like, or they can buy plumbing supplies from someone else. Industry "partners" will sell whatever vendor gives them the best deals, which may or may not be IBM.
[02:25] schestowitz[TR2] AI? Doesn't matter. Quantum? If it ever comes to fruition, that won't matter either. IBM is just a "me too" plumbing supplier in a world whose leadership consists of OpenAI, Nvidia, Google, Microsoft, Apple and some other vendors.
[02:25] schestowitz[TR2] Cisco used to have that all-important lead position, but now they too are just another plumbing vendor. Whether it's routers, switches, voice-over-IP or whatever, customers can pick and choose from a variety of vendors at every price point. There's something for everyone.

[08:41] schestowitz[TR2] Librephone is a new initiative by the FSF to bring full computing freedom to mobile computing environments. The LibrePhone Project is a partnership with Rob Savoye, a developer who has worked on free software (including the GNU toolchain) since the 1980s. "Since mobile phone computing is now so ubiquitous, we're very excited about LibrePhone and think it has the potential to bring software freedom to many more

[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] " yo,
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] is there any way to circumvent the negate-overflow in typical ubsan?
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] i'm trying to do security research on android binder services
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] (targeting a specific vendor library) and running into an unexpected
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] issue, ubsan instrumentation in libbinder.so on a production build.
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] when triggering integer overflow in service implementations through
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] binder ipc, i'm hitting a ubsan negate-overflow check in
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] BBinder::transact. specifically in the transaction recording path:
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] BBinder::transact() {
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] ...
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] pthread_mutex_lock(extras + 0x14);
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] CMP WZR, W0 // compare 0 - return_value
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] B.VS ubsan_abort // crashes here
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] }
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] what happens is the service heap state gets corrupted, but when binder
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] tries to record the transaction, pthread_mutex_lock reads corrupted
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] mutex data and returns INT_MIN. then the "0 - INT_MIN" comparison
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] triggers ubsan and aborts before i can see the actual memory corruption
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] behavior.
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] the abort message:
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] ubsan: negate-overflow by 0x
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] i have root and can test out different things, but the poc must not
[19:58] schestowitz[TR2] require root to run or setup.
