IBM is slowly but surely shrinking everything else via offshoring and cost take out. We used to call this saving your way to prosperity. The problem with just focusing on mainframe is the company cant afford to invest in anything else and as a result has to shrink dramatically. [12:52] schestowitz[TR2] Lets go to the score board to verify [12:52] schestowitz[TR2] SW = Has moved to an acquisition innovation model focused on mainframe. Buy it, dont develop it. Make money by becoming a distributor worldwide [12:52] schestowitz[TR2] Infrastructure = Has moved to mainframe model only. HW design = mainframe, chip design = mainframe, hybrid cloud = focused on mainframe. Everything else is being starved. Power 11 is a meh and the results prove it. Power 12 is down to a skeleton crew and will never see the light of day. Storage is exclusively focused on mainframe. Cloud is slowly being partnered out to more nimble companies except for the mainframe. Whats left? [12:52] schestowitz[TR2] TSS Most of TSS will be sold/partnered off when IBM finds a scaleout partner for infrastructure. Does this look like a replay of the Intel server selloff? You bet it does. [12:52] schestowitz[TR2] Consulting = Has focused on mainframe modernization and all of its iterations. Who says? The CEO and CFO on every quarterly earnings call. Farm the mainframe install base as we have a monopoly. Code modernization, repetitive task automation, integrating acquired SW into mainframe operations, offering mainframe services and operations (easy to due when you own the HW and SW), partnering with any AI company that can move your mainfra [12:52] schestowitz[TR2] me narrative forward. You dont see any innovation or engagement coming out of consulting unless its centered on mainframe and that innovation is usually developed by a partner. Eg the result is little to zero growth, thus cost take out mostly via offshoring has to be the focus if you are trying to deliver profits and free cash flow. As such look for IBM to continue to shrink in first world countries, as it moves operations to [12:52] schestowitz[TR2] third world countries for the lower labor rates. This will work for a while, but as you move further and further away from your customers, there will be blow back and gradually your customers will fade away." [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] https://www.wsj.com/business/deals/ibm-nears-roughly-11-billion-deal-for-confluent-276f52d8 [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] Deal for data-infrastructure company could come as soon as Monday [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] By: Lauren Thomas [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] Dec. 7, 2025 10:01 pm ET [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] International Business Machines IBM is in advanced talks to acquire data-infrastructure company Confluent CFLT for around $11 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] The details [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] A deal could be announced as soon as Monday, the people said, cautioning that the talks could still fall apart. [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] Confluent had a market value of around $8 billion as of Friday, while IBMs was around $290 billion. [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] Confluent provides technology that helps manage streams of real-time data used in big artificial-intelligence models. An AI bo-m has boosted the need for its capabilities from companies in sectors including retail, technology and financial services. [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] The context [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] An acquisition of Confluent would be the biggest deal for IBM in recent memory as it repositions its business around AI. [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] Last year, it agreed to buy cloud-software provider HashiCorp for $6.4 billion, in a deal that pushed it further into fast-growing cloud and AI offerings. [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] In October, IBM posted higher revenue in the third quarter, boosted by higher-than-expected growth in its consulting business. IBM in November said it would lay off thousands of employees before the end of the year, joining other technology companies that are repositioning themselves in the age of artificial intelligence. [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] IBM has been competing with Google, Microsoft and a number of startups to build computers that exceed the abilities of the best conventional ones. It is working on larger clusters of quantum chips that it expects will enable large-scale computing in the next five years. [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] Chief Executive Arvind Krishna recently said IBM has used AIspecifically AI agentsto replace the work of a couple of hundred human-resources workers. That has enabled it to hire more programmers and salespeople. [12:56] schestowitz[TR2] Technology has been one of the busiest sectors for dealmaking this year. Google parent Alphabet struck a $32 billion deal for cybersecurity startup Wiz. Palo Alto Networks agreed to a $25 billion deal for CyberArk. And Salesforce struck an $8 billion deal for data-management software firm Informatica.
