[05:30] schestowitz[TR2] Microsoft bought Skype, got rid of the P2P part, and added NSA backdoors [05:30] schestowitz[TR2] I imagine half the outcry about TikTok is: [05:30] schestowitz[TR2] US politicians are worried that the US's required "lawful intercept"/CALEA features like this AT&T feature aren't as easily available in TikTok as they are for Meta or Alphabet or Apple products and other US based services that happily sell the data. [05:30] schestowitz[TR2] The other half of the issue is that the US worries that China may do similar. [05:30] schestowitz[TR2] But of course in reality, TikTok already provides such access to the US government too when presented with a legal warrant. And similarly Microsoft collaborates with China's government where required by their laws. No matter who runs TikTok, they'll understand how important it is to follow the laws of whatever countries they're doing busineness in - and look to similar historical precedents, like when all except for one US Telecom [05:30] schestowitz[TR2] company permitted such spying, it did NOT go well for the CEO of the one who refused. [05:30] schestowitz[TR2] It's the same reason the US encourages their European allies to use Cisco instead of other telecom equipment providers [05:30] schestowitz[TR2] A sale of TikTok to a US company would also make projects like this CIA project easier. Disenchanted Windows user? How about a drink of Linux Lite?
    [11:52] schestowitz[TR2]
    [11:52] schestowitz[TR2]

Linux Lite is deservedly one of the higher-profile third-party Ubuntu remixes. It resolves many of the issues first-time migrants from Windows might face, while avoiding some of the complexities that other Ubuntu downstream distros, such as Linux Mint and Zorin OS, introduce. Linux Mint is a safe bet, and it's entirely free, but it does make would-be users choose between three different de [11:52] schestowitz[TR2] sktops, and it replaces Canonical's Snap packages with the equally heavyweight and complex Flatpak. Zorin OS too comes in multiple editions, some of which come with heavily-customised versions of GNOME, some of which cost money and include a lot of bundled Flatpak apps.

Jacob Appelbaum wanted SFTP package uploads to Debian
    [11:54] schestowitz[TR2]
    [11:54] schestowitz[TR2]

Here he talks about using SFTP for package uploads. This is interesting because we know there have been many attempts to subvert the security of SSH, which underlies SFTP. The mysterious Edward Brocklesby affair is one example where the SSH2 package maintainer was secretly expelled.

    New Human Interface Guidelines
    [11:56] schestowitz[TR2]
    [11:56] schestowitz[TR2]

Today Id like to share a new set of Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) for KDEs software that Ive written, replacing the old one. This work was done over the past several months in consultation with many KDE designers and developers; the merge request says 42 people were CCd, and almost 500 comments were posted during the 2+ month review process.

    [11:56] schestowitz[TR2]

You can read the document at https://develop.kde.org/hig.
