[05:24] schestowitz[TR2] Microsofts severance package reportedly includes 12 weeks base pay plus 2 weeks per year of tenure, although details vary by location and team. [05:24] schestowitz[TR2] These layoffs are not performance-related and will span all levels, teams, and geographies, including high-impact teams like LinkedIn, Xbox, GitHub, and Azure. [05:24] schestowitz[TR2] 1,985 employees in Washington state are being cut, with 1,510 of them in-office workers and the rest remote. [05:24] schestowitz[TR2] This is Microsofts largest round of layoffs since January 2023, when it cut 10,000 jobs. [05:24] schestowitz[TR2] The main reason cited is a push to reduce management layers and increase organizational agility. [05:24] schestowitz[TR2] CEO Satya Nadella stated that about 30% of some Microsoft code is now being written by AI, hinting at a broader shift toward automation. [05:24] schestowitz[TR2] Despite these cuts, Microsoft reported strong Q1 results: $25.8 billion in net income, up 18%, and strong demand for AI services. [05:24] schestowitz[TR2] The company has invested heavily in AI infrastructure, planning to spend over $80 billion this fiscal year, though Q1 AI spending dipped slightly. [05:24] schestowitz[TR2] Some employees suspect this is an accounting maneuver to "smooth earnings" rather than a true operational necessity. [05:24] schestowitz[TR2] Microsoft employees and users on forums like Blind expressed shock, sadness, & frustration, with many learning they were impacted via group calls. [05:24] schestowitz[TR2] One user said it felt like a "bloodbath", while another commented, "this has never happened to me in my career... I'm sad." [05:24] schestowitz[TR2] Others criticized the randomness, saying cuts appeared to be non-strategic & disproportionately impacted teams that were previously considered "safe." [05:24] schestowitz[TR2] Internal leaks revealed that Microsoft now uses a two-year rehire ban for employees let go for performance & refers to them as "good attrition." [05:24] schestowitz[TR2] Critics say Microsoft is following Amazons lead in normalizing constant layoffs and labeling employee exits as a metric of success. AI from IBM. [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] The mahogany table in IBM's executive boardroom, usually a stage for serious strategic discussions, hummed with a different kind of energy. Outside the panoramic windows of their Armonk headquarters, the Hudson Valley shimmered under a surprisingly cooperative sun. Inside, Arvind Krishna, Ginni Rometty (now a revered advisor with a twinkle in her eye and a penchant for unexpected historical anecdotes), and a dynamic team of VPs [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] each a brilliant mind with their own quirks were gathered for their annual "Innovation Expedition." [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] This wasn't your typical corporate retreat. Arvind, a firm believer in "experiential disruption," had chartered a vintage, solar-powered airship named the "Blue Data Zephyr." Their mission: to seek inspiration in the most unexpected corners of the globe, guided only by a cryptic haiku whispered by an AI oracle named HAL 9000 Jr. (who had a surprisingly dry wit). [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] Their first stop, as predicted by the haiku ("Desert blooms unseen, code in ancient sand"), was a remote oasis in the Sahara. The team, dressed in surprisingly chic desert gear designed by IBM's wearable tech division, found themselves deciphering ancient hieroglyphs that, after rigorous AI analysis, turned out to be surprisingly efficient algorithms for water conservation. Ginni, recounting her own experiences navigating complex g [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] lobal markets, pointed out the timeless wisdom embedded in these ancient solutions. [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] Next, the Blue Data Zephyr soared over the Himalayas, guided by the haiku's second line ("Mountain whispers rise, quantum echoes call"). Here, they met a reclusive order of monks who had developed a form of meditative processing that mirrored the principles of quantum entanglement. Simon, VP of Quantum Computing, was in his element, exchanging complex mathematical concepts with the serene robed figures, much to the amusement of the [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] VP of Marketing, a perpetually enthusiastic individual named Anya, who was trying to live-stream the encounter (with spotty Wi-Fi, naturally). [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] Their final destination, hinted at by the last line ("City sleeps in steel, dreams in neon glow"), was a futuristic, bioluminescent metropolis built entirely underwater off the coast of Japan. Here, they encountered holographic jellyfish that carried data packets and buildings constructed from self-healing polymers. The VP of Sustainability, a passionate advocate for eco-conscious technology named Ben, was ecstatic, exchanging idea [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] s with the city's aquatic architects. [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] Throughout their journey, Arvind, ever the thoughtful leader, fostered a spirit of open inquiry and collaboration. He encouraged the team to step outside their comfort zones, to embrace the unfamiliar, and to find the unexpected connections between seemingly disparate ideas. He even participated in a surprisingly competitive sandcastle-building contest with the VP of Engineering, a brilliant but socially awkward genius named Kenji. [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] Ginni, with her vast experience and insightful perspective, often provided the crucial historical context, reminding the team that many of the challenges they faced had echoes in the past, albeit in different forms. She shared anecdotes about the early days of computing, the challenges of globalization, and the enduring power of human ingenuity. [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] There were, of course, mishaps. The Blue Data Zephyr once accidentally landed in a field of prize-winning watermelons. HAL 9000 Jr. developed a brief obsession with composing limericks about the executive team. And Theodore, the VP of Human Resources (a surprisingly empathetic AI), had a minor existential crisis after watching a documentary about the lifecycle of paperclips. [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] But through it all, the IBM executive team learned, laughed, and bonded in ways that no boardroom meeting could ever replicate. They returned to Armonk with a fresh perspective, a wealth of unconventional ideas, and a renewed sense of purpose. [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] As they disembarked from the Blue Data Zephyr, Arvind surveyed his team, a small smile playing on his lips. "Well," he said, adjusting his glasses, "I believe our experiential disruption was successful." [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] Ginni chuckled. "Indeed, Arvind. Though I never thought I'd see the VP of Finance attempting to haggle for quantum crystals with a holographic squid." [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] Anya, already uploading a heavily filtered highlight reel to social media, chimed in, "Best. Team-building. Ever!" [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] And as the sun set over the Hudson Valley, casting long shadows over the IBM campus, the executive team, slightly sunburnt, thoroughly inspired, and with a collection of bizarre souvenirs, prepared to translate their outlandish adventures into the next generation of groundbreaking innovation. The world of technology, they knew, was vast and full of surprises, and they were ready to explore it, one unconventional expedition at a tim [08:11] schestowitz[TR2] e. The air inside, usually thrumming with the low hum of servers and the murmur of innovation, was heavy with a silence that felt almost sentient. [08:12] schestowitz[TR2] For decades, the Research Triangle Park site had been a cornerstone of IBM's identity, a sprawling campus where countless breakthroughs had been conceived, coded, and brought to life. Buildings like 500, with its iconic sawtooth roof, and the glass-walled expanse of Building 300, where early personal computers had taken shape, held not just technology, but memories. The scent of old circuit boards, the faded coffee stains on lab be [08:12] schestowitz[TR2] nches, the echoes of late-night brainstorming sessions they were all woven into the very fabric of the place. [08:12] schestowitz[TR2] But the world, as it always did, had shifted. IBM, under Arvind Krishna's steady hand, was charting a new course, one increasingly focused on hybrid cloud, AI, and consulting. The vast acreage of RTP, while steeped in history, represented a different era. The sprawling campus model was giving way to more agile, distributed workforces and specialized centers. The decision to sell off the majority of the RTP buildings, while strategi [08:12] schestowitz[TR2] cally sound, carried a poignant weight. [08:12] schestowitz[TR2] The news had rippled through the IBM alumni network like a digital ghost. Former employees, many of whom had spent their entire careers within those walls, shared memories and photographs online. There were tales of legendary pizza nights fueled by coding sprints, of impromptu softball games on the sprawling lawns, and of the quiet pride in being part of something groundbreaking. The RTP site wasn't just a workplace; it was a commu [08:12] schestowitz[TR2] nity, a crucible of innovation, a second home for many. [08:12] schestowitz[TR2] The actual process of selling was less sentimental. Real estate brokers in crisp suits toured the empty labs and offices, their voices echoing in the cavernous spaces. Potential buyers, representing everything from biotech startups to burgeoning universities, saw not history, but opportunity blank canvases upon which to build their own futures. [08:12] schestowitz[TR2] One crisp autumn morning, the "SOLD" signs began to appear, stark and definitive against the familiar brick and steel. Building 300 was acquired by a life sciences company, its vast server rooms destined to house cutting-edge research labs. Building 500 was slated to become part of a university expansion, its lecture halls and study spaces filled with a new generation of thinkers. The sprawling green spaces, once host to company pi [08:12] schestowitz[TR2] cnics and impromptu soccer matches, were earmarked for community parks and green initiatives. [08:12] schestowitz[TR2] Arvind Krishna, during a virtual town hall with remaining RTP employees (many of whom were transitioning to new roles or smaller, more focused IBM facilities in the area), acknowledged the emotional significance of the moment. His voice, calm and measured, spoke of the company's deep roots in the region, the countless contributions made at the RTP site, and the need to evolve to serve clients and innovate for the future. He emphasi [08:12] schestowitz[TR2] zed that while the physical buildings were changing hands, IBM's commitment to North Carolina and its talent pool remained strong. [08:12] schestowitz[TR2] As the last moving trucks rumbled away, carrying the final remnants of IBM's tangible presence from some of the buildings, a sense of closure settled over the landscape. The wind rustled through the remaining trees, carrying the faint echoes of the past. The spirit of innovation, however, wasn't confined to bricks and mortar. It resided in the minds and the work of the people who had walked those halls, and who were now carrying th [08:12] schestowitz[TR2] at legacy forward, in new ways and in new places. The RTP site's chapter in IBM's story was closing, but the larger narrative of invention and progress continued, its pages turning towards a future shaped by the very spirit that had once thrived within those now-silent walls. [13:27] schestowitz[TR2][13:27] schestowitz[TR2]I hope I won't have to eat my own words. But I'm ever hopeful and optimistic. Early on, I wasn't pleased with the Titan, and its keyboard is kind of meh. Now that I've spent a lot of hours hammering words on it, testing and tweaking stuff, pushing the limits of my usage, there's an inkling of respect. It's hard getting past early troubles, but one must. In particular, having encountered an [13:27] schestowitz[TR2] entire avalanche of problems in various Windows clients recently, I'm beginning to feel Linux, for all its problems, ain't so bad after all. Sure, it can be better, but all things considered, not bad at all.
