[14:33] schestowitz[TR3][14:33] schestowitz[TR3]In news that is sure to delight the Linux world, version 257 of systemd has arrived. Just a day before its release, a major new version of another Linux init system came out, GNU Shepherd version 1.0. They're very different ways of doing the same basic task, and we're happy to see more options in this particularly controversial role.
[14:33] schestowitz[TR3]The last version of systemd, back in June, merited special attention from The Register it received two separate articles. The first highlighted an impressively tone-deaf attempt at a joke, when the Fediverse announcement proclaimed that Version 256 of systemd boasts "42 percent less Unix philosophy." A week later, a point-release followed: systemd 256.1: Now slightly less likely to de [14:33] schestowitz[TR3] lete /home.

We also have confirmation that the Raspberry Pi is running Falcon Player (FPP), an open source tool designed for synchronizing LEDs with a Pi as the main controller.

[17:27] schestowitz[TR3][17:27] schestowitz[TR3]One of the challenges of running Linux is that it can be somewhat easy to break if you dont know what youre doing. One errant update and your flow is completely broken, and youre stuck in a command line, desperately writing in commands to get it working again.

[17:27] schestowitz[TR3]This is also true of Windowsthat OS can get pretty flaky depending on what you do with it.
[17:27] schestowitz[TR3]But the nice thing is that, with Linux, its easier to build architectures that are a bit more user-proof, ensuring users have a nicer experience without losing the underlying capabilities of the operating system.

[17:27] schestowitz[TR3][17:27] schestowitz[TR3]As usual, the AlmaLinux release notes provide a much more digestible summary of what's new in this version than the IBM subsidiary's epic. RHEL 10 will require version 3 of the x86-64 instruction set we described the different versions a couple of years ago.

Designed and built by the same engineers who shape Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the distro is often described as the major version branch from which future RHEL versions emerge.
