At the end of the day, they need to make the shareholders happy by going above the expected earnings per share estimate from analysts. If they don't meet above expectation numbers then the share price would go down. This is the only thing the board members, CEO, Cxx, and shareholders care about. Laid off during COVID after 25 years of service. They always go for the older workers. Even if you take the severance, you are still entitled to arbitration and there are a lot of firms with suits against ibm for age discrimination. You should look into it.

You would have been selected for the layoff ~1 month ago, well before you mentioned your retirement. It is highly unlikely that your manager could have done anything to change it when s/he heard of your retirement. Even if it could be changed, you and your team are better off by not changing it - since you are getting paid severance into January (when you would have been gone), you will end up with more salary this way, and someone

Resource Actions (RAs) at IBM have "Code Names" ... this one is code named "Falcon"... from what I have heard, it has various phases... Phase I is USA (Notifications for most were Tues. Sept. 17th with Oct. 17th Exit).... other geos/regions I believe are Phase II, Phase III....

This is probably a hard time and please know that you already on the right track by being proactive. Keep going -- action alleviates anxiety. Take control and plan your next steps. Here are some suggestions to get you started.

Before you leave IBM, here are 12 actions to get ready to find a new job:

(1) While it will be hard to stay positive near term, be sure you don't burn any bridges internally before you leave. IBMers know alot of people and will be good references for you and they may know of open positions elsewhere and/or could refer recruiters to you.

(2) Do a quick audit of your skills -- are the current? the skills that people want now? If you need to buff up your skills, now is the time to take advantage of all the free education at IBM and earn some new badges. Once you get outside, you may have to pay to get re-skilled. Better to take advantage of the free resources now.

(3) Get your LinkedIn profile updated -- lots of good advice online about how to shine

schestowitz[TR2]

(4) Start getting connected with fellow IBMers on LinkedIn now, before you leave. Once you leave, people may be less inclined to link with you. Of course, when you reach out to them on LinkedIn there is no need to reveal that you want to connect because you have been RA'd. You can share that at a future time when you are ready to network.

(5) Update your resume -- while you can do it yourself, I suggest you invest $200 to have a professional help you. Here's a service my HR Partner recommends www.topresume.com/

(6) If you are in the US, get on the phone with the Money Smart program team and have them provide an assessment of your 401K and finances. This will let you know where you stand financially. The Money Smart program is free, so take advantage of it.Also check if you have a Future Health Account on the Fidelity NetBenefits site under Health Insurance.

(7) In the US, depending on what State you reside in, you may or may not be paid for your unused Personal Choice Days. If you will not get paid for your Personal Choice days, I would suggest you use your Personal Choice days instead of vacation days.

(8) In the US, save all your vacation days since IBM will pay you for those days that you have accrued and not used.

(9) If you have an Anniversary coming up (Quarter Century etc), look on w3 to see what you are eligible for -- and think about how you want to handle it before you leave.

(10) If you have Blue Points, cash them in and treat yourself to something.

(11) Download your Checkpoint and PBC history and documents. You will want to refer to them later when you are interviewing and people ask about your work experiences and performance.

(12) Download your Think40 history so you remember all the courses you have taken and the learning you have done. This will be good fodder for your updated resume and will demonstrate that you are a life long learner.

IBM's strategy seems to be to buy companies, promise they'll synergise with IBM's offerings and before the next set of disappointing results demonstrate that they didn't, to buy someone else and try to hype that purchase off whilst shoving the old one under the carpet.

This is probably the worst US company to provide outplacement services for those IBM US folks who get laid off. The web site provides little or no introduction to their services, the coaches are a no-show for meetings; when they do show up they can't wait to finish up their 30 minute session every week. Sad and pathetic offerings mostly but some of the Webex meetings from the senior coaches are packed with good information. What's

up with that ? Is IBM getting a bargain price from Risensmart, so they engage the services of these talentless goons ? There must be a reason for providing such a lousy service for 6 months of hopelessness for those laid off. No, IBM tries to get the biggest bang for the buck, of course. You might have better luck as I did with my local unemployment office who gave me better tips and advice (and free) for my job search than my Risesensmart coaches ever did. I went through 4 Risendumb coaches in 5 months, which must be a record - none of them was very good or cared about my post-IBM career - it showed. This is just a smoke and mirrors act, and the coaches are hopeless and can't do much to help anyone get a job, exce

Does IBM HR give a darn about using this clustf**k company ? Nope, the IBM HR Pipmunk, Nickel and Dime couldn't care less. The IBM "Special Exit" package promises a lot but delivers little or nothing to those laid off. So check with your lawyer first. That's why IBM gets sued by many US employees for age discrimination and the employees win but have to sign NDAs to collect their rewards. Happens all the time...
