Linux Laptop Letdown: When OEM Largesse Runs Dry
    [09:19] schestowitz
    [09:19] schestowitz

So as regular readers know, I have largely only purchased laptops with Linux preinstalled for quite a few years. This is because as a person living within a capitalistic society, I am ethically compelled to vote with my dollar as it is the only vote I have which actually seems to matter. To make a long story short: I do not wish to reward Microsoft for their ongoing objectionable behaviors rela [09:19] schestowitz ting to Windows and I really don't much care for MacOS so Linux is my de-facto operating system of choice.

Randomness in programming (with Go code)
    [09:25] schestowitz
    [09:25] schestowitz

Computer software is typically deterministic on paper: if you run twice the same program with the same inputs, you should get the same outputs. In practice, the complexity of modern computing makes it unlikely that you could ever run twice the same program and get exactly the same result, down to the exact same execution time. For example, modern operating systems randomize the memory addresses [09:25] schestowitz as a security precaution: a technique called Address space layout randomization. Thus if you run a program twice, you cannot be guaranteed that the memory is stored at the same memory addresses. In Go, you can print the address of a pointer with the %p directive. The following program will allocate a small array of integers, and print the corresponding address, using a pointer to the first value. If you run this program multiple times, [09:25] schestowitz you may get different addresses.

ISO-8859-1 and English arent the default
    [09:29] schestowitz
    [09:29] schestowitz

Ive been blind to it most of my life, on account of English being my first language, and ISO-8859-1 including my native script. But it was only luck on my part being born into this convenient circumstance, and its only outdated convention that keeps it that way.

I think Whiona hits the nail squarely on the head with this one. Writing a blog post just for the fun of it is exactly why I blog. All that ProBlogger crap - find a niche, double down, collect emails, CONVERT! Is utter bullshit.
