[07:33] schestowitz[TR2] That is correct. Bruce Perens wrote about not being able to acquire a trademark for Open Source Software many years ago. He reported that the reason give to him back then was that it's not allowed to have trademarks on common dictionary words or phrases like open source, windows, exchange, etc. The OSI, even back before it was infiltrated and corrupted by Microsoft did not address a possible alternative approach which would have be [07:33] schestowitz[TR2] en to offer compliance certifications. [07:33] schestowitz[TR2] PBS Station Lost 70 Years of Archive to Cloud Vendor Collapse [07:33] schestowitz[TR2] It's a tragic story, and the are many problems with trying to rely on cloud providers either big ones or small ones, but the real problem underneath it all has gone unaddressed: malfeasance and/or gross incompetence. [07:33] schestowitz[TR2] It is either malfeasance or incompetence or both to not keep backup copies of important data, especially when that data is irreplaceable and entrusted to them by the community. It's not for a lack of money, the PBS local station seems to be swimming in it (see the Consumer Rights Wiki post linked below). Furthermore, proper backup media does not cost much to purchase and deploy. You'd think that with a full-time, salaried staff mem [07:33] schestowitz[TR2] ber assigned to deal with IT there at the station, it'd be a priority. Anyone except maybe microsofters know of the 3-2-1 rule which is considered to be the bare minimum backup strategy, which includes at least one off-site (and offline at that) copy. [07:33] schestowitz[TR2] As for offline and online copies, there is a huge difference between a copy and a backup. A copy can be anywhere and either online or offline. But a backup is only a backup while it is offline. So the moment you physically plug in the backup medium to make a backup, test the backup, or restore from the backup, it reverts to being a mere copy for the duration. That is because a plethora of problems can befall online media. Thus it i [07:33] schestowitz[TR2] s essential for there to be multiple offline copies. [07:33] schestowitz[TR2] Anyway, I hope they get it sorted, but the Open Source Storage company seems to have been outsourcing to Iron Mountain Data Centers. And Open Source Storage was Iron Mountain's customer, not PBS. So that complicates matters. [07:33] schestowitz[TR2] Louis Rossmann has been aggregating information on the incident over on the Consumer Rights Wiki: [07:33] schestowitz[TR2] https://consumerrights.wiki/w/User:Louis/Nine_PBS_50TB_cloud_lockout [07:33] schestowitz[TR2] I hope that PBS is 1) able to get their data back, 2) back it up properly, 3) fire the person who hired the person who chose not to do backups, 4) hire in someone skilled (i.e. not a microsofter) to take care of their IT needs properly. [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] Just a quick note to let you know about a couple of things I'm organising in [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] Auckland, NZ. If you're in Auckland, I hope to see you! [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] "Write to Change the World" (August 29, 1:30pm at Whangaparaoa [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] Library)------------------------------- [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] This workshop for kids aged around 11 through 14. They'll be immersed in the [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] world of an imaginary junior high in the grips of a controversy much like [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] Webcamgate[1] and shown how to write pieces to get the community to take [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] action. I'll be covering how to construct an argument, the mechanics of good [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] writing and how to structure persuasive letters, articles and speeches. [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] "Free software for youth organisations" (September 5, 1:30pm, Orewa [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] Library)------------------------------------------ [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] This is an introduction to free software for organisations that serve young [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] people in Auckland. I'll talk briefly about what free software is and why it [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] supports social justice, then demonstrate a range of free programs that can [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] help then do their work. [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] If you're a consultant or part of a business in Auckland that offers free [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] software-based services to this kind of organisation and you want to [07:35] schestowitz[TR2] participate, I'd love to hear from you. That's just called lowering the bar. Also, 4% growth isn't really growth when the inflation rate is also around 4%. Especially pathetic when the economy overall is actually growing around 2%. IBM is falling behind quickly. Why do I say that? AK went out on a limb and revised IBM revenue to 4-5% growth. He would not have said that if he wasnt certain he had a make in hand. I suspect a lot of the deals expected in 2nd have closed thus goosing 3rd q revenue. NOTE IBM is also using all of the old plays to goose the 1 billion in free cash flow (no travel, hiring freeze, PIPing [17:35] schestowitz[TR2] folks, and I expect a Sept RA). Those savings drop to the bottom line thus goosing free cash flow. The last thing to keep in mind is the sales re-org. You dont reorg in the middle of a year unless you can see a way to keep wall street happy. I suspect the 2nd q bleed over gave AK that flexibility. It also gave AK a way to reorg sales management (possibly layoff) for lack of execution. The net of it all is AK has a way to get to [17:35] schestowitz[TR2] 4% + revenue growth [17:35] schestowitz[TR2] " [17:52] *x-amarsh04 has quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
