schestowitz[TR2]Very easy. Called The Peter Principle and been around forever. When I joined IBM in the early 80s it was awesome. I cannot begin to tell you how great it was vs the %^&* hole it is now. All self inflicted and started by everyone's favorite troll's man crush Gerstner.Jun 22 07:03
schestowitz[TR2]The Peter Principle, a satirical 1969 book by Laurence J. Peter and Raymond Hull, argues that in a hierarchy, employees are promoted until they reach their "level of incompetence," where they can no longer perform well, leading to widespread inefficiency. The book humorously explains why incompetence seems rampant in organizations, suggesting that people are promoted based on success in their current role, not for the skills neededJun 22 07:03
schestowitz[TR2] in the next, such as a great salesperson being promoted to a manager with no leadership skills.Jun 22 07:03
schestowitz[TR2]Core conceptJun 22 07:03
schestowitz[TR2]The principle: "In a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence".Jun 22 07:03
schestowitz[TR2]The process: An employee who is good at their job gets promoted. This continues until they are promoted to a position where they are no longer competent, and there, they stay.Jun 22 07:03
schestowitz[TR2]The result: The organization becomes filled with people who are not good at their jobs, as the competent ones have been promoted out of their effective roles.Jun 22 07:03
schestowitz[TR2]Key takeaways from the bookJun 22 07:03
schestowitz[TR2]Satirical but insightful: It uses humor to critique management and organizational structures, but its observations about promotion and incompetence are considered classic in management theory.Jun 22 07:03
schestowitz[TR2]Examples: It provides examples like a competent teacher becoming an incompetent principal because the skills for the new role (dealing with school boards) are different from the old one (teaching).Jun 22 07:03
schestowitz[TR2]"Final Placement Syndrome": The book also describes symptoms of being stuck in an incompetent role, suggesting "distraction therapy" (finding competence in hobbies) as a remedy.Jun 22 07:03

schestowitz[TR2]Dead Gerbil was a thief and a wastrel at RJR Nabisco before he came to IBM. He bullied people into thinking he knew what he was doing...he didn't. And he robbed the IBM Company blind. Millions of dollars left with Dead Gerbil when he left the company. You call it saving the company. That's why Dead Gerbil is pushing up the daisies...in he-l. Yes, he saved the company by looting it and the looting continued after he left. IBM was biJun 22 07:06
schestowitz[TR2]g in those days, so he could steal and raid with ease and there was money all over the place. You can't do that any more. It's getting smaller and smaller as business dries up - IBM's only business will be mainframes until it's death knell is rung. All the AI and Quantum stuff is small potatoes, as other companies are more nimble and get ahead with the technology.Jun 22 07:06

schestowitz[TR2]I use Sundays to plan my week. This week I'm taking my plundering to the next level. One of the sites I work/write at has some really nice ergonomic conference room chairs. I want one for home. Obviously I can't just walk out with it. But I took a looksy last week and I think I can disassemble one with my multi-tool. Then I'd take it out piece by piece and reassemble it at home. I have a large food delivery backpack that should fitJun 22 07:06
