●● IRC: #techbytes @ FreeNode: Friday, November 27, 2020 ●● ● Nov 27 [01:43] schestowitz Hi again Roy :-) I've started to draft an art idea or two, so will get those to you some time next week. In the meantime, just a final note to Figosdev, and, although brief, it's a little more personal, so may be best not published. If there are some non-personal chunks you'd like to add into other articles, please feel free. I'd be very grateful if it could be passed onto him, and my email address, if he wishes to respond. [01:43] schestowitz PS I saw your 'good news' article, too, along with catching up on articles I'd missed recently; good stuff! [01:43] schestowitz To Figosdev [01:43] schestowitz Thanks for your response, and, overall, for taking the time to discuss things, particularly as you reference working for 4 hours on this! I too am putting in the hours, so I hope that communication, even if I have some issues, comes over as well as possible. Also, thank you for the links. :-) [01:43] schestowitz My suggestions had the focus that maybe the new space could start taking form now, e.g. more people involved, working together, getting more active. But I see more clearly now that, regarding the BSD move, this could be more about a developer focus, with a view to rebuilding GNU at a later time. [01:43] schestowitz If BSD requires some work to make it freedom-respecting, that's off-putting to me, and no different to the system I'm using; a simple clean system that I can feel capable regarding basic maintenance, and need to check and clean up a bit initially. Using a more complex harder-to-maintain system would add risk, and I'm done with jumping through yet more burning hoops day in day out! Also, not good graphics tablet support on BSD. I've made [01:43] schestowitz many efforts about free software and linux, far more than the average person, as many of us have, and you can't put a price on a clean conscience, so at least there's that, and continuing to champion free software! [01:43] schestowitz It seems to have come back round to referencing using the same resources that are scattered/contradictory, or complex handbooks, + some YT vids, all as before, which I don't see as rebuilding advocacy or education. And of course the ever-stated 'learn to code', which is a main reason I've increasingly gone more offline and away from any Linux discussions/involvement. Coders are one kind of person, artists are another, doctors are [01:43] schestowitz another; all matter equally. I'm sure you know this, but Linux is a very miserable place when nobody tends to have that attitude, never mind say it. Thrive 2: "Ignoring your own standards, as well as taking rules too seriously, can compromise the integrity of your community." I must state again, I'm not a coder, and, no matter how hard I've tried to master more difficult stuff, it doesn't work. Not able; not my journey. I can't abandon [01:43] schestowitz my way of being to fit in with another's way of being. The donations, bug fix reports, helping other users, promoting the right things, feeding back, many different contributions ... where would devs be without that glue? The same as where would users be without good devs who code? All of it's great. In my bones I'm not a 'linux person' or 'tech person', but, again, will always champion people's right to freedom, choice, privacy, [01:43] schestowitz happiness, wellbeing. I'm also not sure why you're referencing grannies, as I'm early 50's, lol. [01:43] schestowitz Certainly not 'promoting centralisation' through wishing for one good place, so people know where to go, and have clear well-organised access to important tools. Is TechRights 'promoting centralisation' also, as everything's gathered there? Are they too 'working in the same way as Github'? Of course not. Name any famous battle and I'll underline the point that not gathering forces in one place can very easily lose the battle; at the [01:43] schestowitz least, if there's a co-ordinated pincer movement in battle, there is one main leader, directing the various groups within the one manoevre. Otherwise, it's game over. [01:43] schestowitz You reference RMS being afraid to rock the boat, which is surprising, and I'd want to hear it directly from RMS before fully believing that, incase some chinese whispers are going on! "If he's afraid to, few care as much as he does" ... that doesn't mean others should just throw in the towel; that would be a travesty and a sorry excuse to use. He's elderly, and fought like a wildcat for 30 years ... I'm sure there are younger people [01:43] schestowitz with 30 years of similar fight in them, so, unfortunately, I need to say this isn't a good message to put out there, and also to please consider the backdrop to people reading articles ... this year, more than any, people already aware about free software, and new people, don't need 'poking', and that could end up putting people off reading guest articles! [01:43] schestowitz Can I just say how surprised I am there's no free software baby monitor?! Tech people play all day with big Pi/hobby projects etc, but nobody wants to make a baby monitor that respects freedom?! Compromising is 'okay', but I should hit myself over the head with a hammer day in day out, trying to do things I can't do, to champion the 'cause', sacrificing sanity, health and happiness?! That's far too big an ask. Also, to add to the ' [01:43] schestowitz things that really surprise me', and referencing 'not enough devs', an article in the last year or two said there are 10,000+ devs on Linux, granted many working on servers, but where have they all gone ... big tech? [01:43] schestowitz Attempting to wind down a bit of a charged response, and to clarify what to carry forward. Again, not trying to attack or judge you personally; no ill will intended. People can get things 100% right, and the most critical thing while waiting for the numbers to increase, for others to get aware and active, is us all keeping on keeping on, with a clean conscience. That's my first re-affirmation. I also see even clearer that an offline non [01:43] schestowitz updated backup machine is very important, especially as the wayland-pushers bash on, most likely knowing graphics people will get messed up along the way! Bypassing that is necessary. Being as careful as possible on the main machine, switching off the ethernet whenever possible, reading what updates are doing; always key. [01:43] schestowitz The world is a better place for the 'lurkers for freedom' being around, as it also is when devs do what they're best at too, so it's great that we both champion what matters. If you want to email me, even if that's just 'thanks, bye', or not (I won't be offended), I've asked Roy to give you my email, as of course you are entirely free to (not) reply, to disagree, to wrap things up as you wish, but I've asked Roy not to publish this, as [01:43] schestowitz it's obvious I'm a bit peed off with things, and I think we're doing different facets of the same cause anyway. Trying to continue to combo two differing facets of the same thing can end up diluting things, and I'm sure we're both busy, so it's best to power on and get some good stuff done! We're all mighily peed off at big tech, spineless users/devs supporting that, and what's happening out there, already, so there's more than enough [01:43] schestowitz to deal with! [01:43] schestowitz I've appreciated dialoguing, and it has brought things clear, which was my initial hope. And it's wonderful that you referenced Perl 6 possibly leaving github at some point! This is the right direction, so a great note to sign off on.
