Because it is obvious that nothing is coming out of this effort and it's a real paradox that Arvind can say that IBM should no longer be chasing research patents and publications if they don't generate revenue and yet, this is exactly the thing he is doing here. [06:50] schestowitz[TR2] This is total bullsh-t from Arvind as CEO. If there is no headway for this project in the industry, stop the project immediately and dump it. This feels like a last-ditch effort to breathe new life into Albanys floundering nanosheet work that Huiming has championed for years. It is his passion project. [06:50] schestowitz[TR2] The problem is that the industry either wasnt interested in IBMs implementation or developed its own versions. As a result, IBM generated essentially no meaningful licensing revenue from the technology. While IBM made genuine scientific contributions, the basic nanosheet concept wasnt created or invented there. It was already being explored and advanced by multiple companies and research groups. IBM largely built upon an e [06:50] schestowitz[TR2] xisting industry direction rather than creating it. They copied it. [06:50] schestowitz[TR2] From a research perspective, its an impressive accomplishment. From a business perspective, its hard to argue it was a success. After years of investment in time, resources, and manpower, where is the return on investment? [06:50] schestowitz[TR2] Even Huiming has acknowledged in his posts for years now has mentioned one of the most common questions he receives is when the industry will adopt IBMs technology. The reality is that no one appears poised to adopt IBMs specific implementation. Or ever will even entertain it. [06:50] schestowitz[TR2] This latest announcement feels like doubling down on the same strategy. IBM itself is saying commercial high-volume manufacturing could be five years away. In the semiconductor industry, five years is an eternity. By then, newer, better, andmost importantlymore cost-effective solutions will likely exist. [06:50] schestowitz[TR2] Nanosheet and stacked nanosheet technologies absolutely have a future. But if they become commercially successful, the revenue is far more likely to come from companies like Intel, Samsung, or TSMC with their own manufacturing-ready implementations just not IBMs. So its almost a waste of time and money. [06:50] schestowitz[TR2] Thats what makes IBMs strategy so puzzling. The company continues to invest heavily in technologies that generate impressive headlines and publications but have struggled to translate into meaningful licensing revenue or commercial return. At DEC, Ken did not believe in layoffs and he was forced out by the board. DEC was bleeding red, losing more money every day. Dont get me wrong, layoffs are not an excuse for poor management [20:42] schestowitz[TR2] and execution but at DEC, we had no choice as we were seeing red. Plenty of executives have inherited struggling companies. Very few have successfully turned them around. If it were simply a matter of "being in the right place at the right time," we'd see successful turnarounds all the time. We don't. [20:42] schestowitz[TR2] Mr. Gerstner made difficult strategic decisions, preserved IBM as an integrated company when many wanted to break it up, restored profitability, and repositioned IBM for the future. Those weren't accidents or products of luck [20:42] schestowitz[TR2] 1 hour ago by Anonymous [20:42] schestowitz[TR2] | 3 reactions (+0/-3) | Reply [20:42] schestowitz[TR2] Post ID: @dv+1kw5ex3nc [20:42] schestowitz[TR2] +5 [20:42] schestowitz[TR2] @dn let's turn the question around, shall we ? Was anyone else given the opportunity to turn IBM around when it was in trouble ? [20:42] schestowitz[TR2] What I am saying is this - even incremental changes made to the right departments by a loser at IBM at the right time would result in good results. Timing is everything - you just gotta be in the right place at the right time for things to click. I met Dead Gerbil and all he reminded me of was a pugnacious pit bull. Not very bright, but a persistent pit bull nonetheless. And he knew it too. It was ra-e and pillage in lots of places [20:42] schestowitz[TR2] at IBM under the disguise of business transformation. CEOs are paid to lead companies, and he was compensated accordingly. [20:42] schestowitz[TR2] The relevant question is whether he delivered results. When Mr. Gerstner became CEO, IBM was in serious financial trouble and many believed it would be broken apart. Under his leadership, IBM returned to profitability, remained an integrated company, and regained its footing in the technology industry. He was typical of other CEOs and Executives. And when he left IBM, he took a whopping $189 million as his severance package. While you will say he saved the IBM company, he didn't do it out of the goodness of his heart or for any charitable reason. That is business. [20:42] schestowitz[TR2] That $189 million is not exactly chicken feed is it, IBM India HR liar-bot rage-bait troll shill spanky-pants id--t loser parasite ? Treat yourself. As I write, I'm sitting in my lovely new ergonomic chair, a gift I took from IBM. Unfortunately I have so many other gifts from IBM (pens, pencils, sticky notes, dry erase markers, reams of paper, even some phones I don't know what to do with) that I'm having trouble organizing them all. I wish I could take a cabinet but that would be [20:43] schestowitz[TR2] pushing it too far. I'll splurge and buy a nice plastic drawer storage solution instead. Of course I'll make IBM pay for that by way of extra time writing my novel this week.
