My mid-year review was pretty normal & overall positive. Then my manager suddenly hit me with the PIP last week. [05:56] schestowitz[TR2] It honestly feels like a numbers game at this point. [05:56] schestowitz[TR2] A lot of what's written in the PIP assessment is either flat-out untrue or very debatable. Has anyone here had experience pushing back on or challenging a PIP? Is it worth addressing the points I disagree with, or could that just make me look difficult & potentially speed up an RA?" [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] " [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] I am close to retirement and my message is for those in a similar place. I would treat a pip, if you have a track record of good performance, as an attempt at wrongful dismissal, and since my plan is to engage a lawyer anyway to fight for a big severance, this would be the time to do that. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] As a side note for those in Ontario Canada, legal precedent is that those who have fought for severance after a long career at IBM have been able to get somewhere around 1 month per year of service up to a total of about 24 months. This is not something that any employer has to pay right away, but it has been the outcome if you are willing and able to fight IBM legally, which I expect anybody can do if you hire the lawyer on contin [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] gency. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] Goal not achievable in the time as the parts not even made yet. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] I shared with the people I work with that I am on a PIP. And not to share. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] If they have some feedback, give to me instead of in big meeting. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] I worked on the project and if coworker asked me for other support, zi explained difficult unless they explain to my manager this to be higher priority. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] I learned and achieved a lot. my manager did not want it to pass. he extended for another month and another month even though goals completed. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] coworkers wrote to 2nd line manager about the great stuff which made it hard for 1st line to fail me. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] eventually I passed as he had no choice. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] now he tells me often that next time no PIP. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] He really does not like me. best choice in my view is to do a good job and let people around you understand it. so if the manager wants to get rid of you it is hard. Historically rated exceeds, this year rated meets and now on a PIP. We committed no wrongs other than being European and American. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] I cant speak to the odds of beating a PIP, or the value in pushing back on the patently untrue parts, but I would suggest mentally re-framing it: Not how can I mitigate this? But Do I even want to? Seriously, an unjust PIP is IBM marking you for eventual termination. It is NOT a reflection on your actual performance or your value as a person, or even your value to IBM (many high performing employees have been PIPd [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] ). Its someone higher up selecting your employee number off a spreadsheet. SO: Why stress trying to mount a logical defense to an illogical situation? Use the time to start looking around and planning your next step in your career. But it is designed to overwhelm you with work you cannot do. It will push you to the brink mentally if you let it , if try to do everything that is required. Like the previous post mentioned , they will probably tell you you failed the PIP anyway at the end. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] When you are put on a pip, it basically is saying you are targeted for removal. Theyre hoping that once you start working the PIP you will see it is impossible and quit. I have seen it happen many times when I was at Ibm. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] Ive also seen a few times when people have been taken off a pip . This usually occurs when the employee fights, the pip vigorously with HR and has evidence that the manager is lying within the PIP. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] So I would say the chances are slim if youre on a PIP you will survive at IBM . [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] Good luck. IBM can fire an employee at any time - no reason required. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] When hit with a PIP, there are two paths. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] One is to consider it as a moment of separation. You and IBM are now adversary in a zero sum game til the PIP period ends and in most cases, you are fired. Use this time to prioritize life and look for next job, which will, according to many who have left IBM, almost always pay you better and treat you better then IBM who, as a operating model, pays less then industry average. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] Alternative is to try to satisfy the PIP requirements. I've seen many doing this and in all cases, they are fired anyway AFTER being mentally tortured and lose the time to look for another job. [05:57] schestowitz[TR2] IBM is a sinking and becoming an Indian company. Arvind and the executives are disgrace to a storied American brand. The utter disregard for employees. A strategy has been around for quite a long time. Layoff as many people as you need to so you can boost the stock price. Has very little to do with skill or technical ability or value to the company that you offer.. so when it comes down to his people, just dont care. They know someday they will be on the list more than likely. And I dont think the company really cares [05:58] schestowitz[TR2] either. The more people they can get to leave the building [05:58] schestowitz[TR2] On their own , the less they have to pay in severance. [05:58] schestowitz[TR2] I would recommend everyone update their rsum and be looking if you work at that company. There is no security , there is no loyalty. There hasnt been in over 30 years.. and it has gotten a lot worse in the last several years. You are a number on a spreadsheet. A cost center. [05:58] schestowitz[TR2] One thing to keep in mind, the more people that leave or get laid off, means there are less people to bail out the sinking ship. This will only accelerate the trip to the bottom of the ocean. [22:07] schestowitz[TR2] I get this question a lot. [22:07] schestowitz[TR2] The short answer is: I dont hate Rust. Its just a programming language with good and bad (like any other). [22:07] schestowitz[TR2] In fact, youll rarely find me criticizing the Rust language, itself. The primary issues I raise tend to focus on the way Rust is *used*. [22:07] schestowitz[TR2] 1) Rust (both the language and the compiler) are not yet stable. Meaning they are both in a state of flux (sometimes changing in significant ways from week to week) and, as such, are not reliable, steady foundations to build critical systems upon. This may change if the Rust Foundation focuses on releasing a truly stable version of Rust but that hasnt happened yet. [22:07] schestowitz[TR2] 2) There has been a strong movement to utilize Rust as a tool to enforce political and social views. In some ways Rust zealots (including some high-profile open-source developers and managers) treat Rust more like a religious cult than a programming language. This has resulted in forcing Rust clones of existing tools into releases where that simply does not make sense from an engineering or end-user perspective. [22:07] schestowitz[TR2] I have other criticisms of Rust (such as that it is a rather ugly language), but those are mostly personal preference things. [22:07] schestowitz[TR2] The real, critical issues are those two above how Rust is being used."
