You should never discuss externally that which IBM is working on internally. Anyone here or inside IBM or outside IBM can send an email on this to an IBM ethics (how is that for an oxymoron!) email below [13:21] schestowitz[TR2] If you have a concern about potentially unlawful or unethical conduct or suspect there has been a violation of IBMs Business Conduct Guidelines, IBM wants to know. However, let me tell you about one particular machine that I will always remember from my IBM days...the PS/2 Model 55SX. [13:22] schestowitz[TR2] This machine was unremarkable in most aspects...a Micro Channel motherboard, an Intel 386SX processor, 3.5 inch floppy disk, 50 MB or so hard disk, VGA graphics. We're talking about a PC from 1989-1992 or something like that. [13:22] schestowitz[TR2] At the time, what struck me as id--tic was the placement of the power switch. The 55SX had a front-mounted power toggle "switch", and a rear-mounted power supply. The power supply in the rear had its own toggle switch, and to actuate it there was this metal wire that connected the front toggle mechanism to the real toggle switch in the power supply at the rear. [13:22] schestowitz[TR2] So as you flipped the front toggle "switch" on and off, all you'd be doing is moving a piece of plastic, then the front-to-back wire, then the real toggle switch on the power supply. [13:22] schestowitz[TR2] This kludge told me all that I needed to know about IBM's vaunted list of accolades. The culture in Albany has become deeply conditioned and brainwashed or groomed. A huge portion of the workforce is on work visas, so very few are willing to speak out publicly or challenge leadership. When your immigration status depends on your employer, staying quiet often feels like the safest option. It modern day indentured servitude. [13:23] schestowitz[TR2] Thats why so many of the behaviors people complain about continue unchecked. Leadership knows theres little risk of internal pushback because most people simply cant afford to rock the boat. So it continues. They have eat sh-t, smile, thank the leadership and ask for more - or else! Same leaders with their same favorites pulling the same cr-p- wash, rinse, repeat. [20:54] schestowitz[TR2] LOL [20:54] schestowitz[TR2] " ● Jun 30 [21:49] schestowitz[TR2] ""IBM never planned to replace jobs with AI, the execs were avoiding embarrassment and scrutiny by saying the same thing all execs have been saying for the last 4 years. [21:49] schestowitz[TR2] Since 2023, when IBM froze hiring, they went on a spending spree: Hashicorp for 6+B$, Confluent for 11B$, Appito for 4+B$, DataStax for (probably?) 2+B$. [21:49] schestowitz[TR2] Lets not forget the 34B$ they spent on acquiring Red Hat in 2019! [21:49] schestowitz[TR2] All this while laying off thousands: in November alone, they announced a 1% cut globally, impacting 3,000 people. [21:49] schestowitz[TR2] One thing to keep in mind is that IBM is a very very old computer business. Companies today still pay IBM per-cpu-licensing fees for their on prem giant monolithic COBOL mainframes! There are whole other businesses with the only purpose of mainframe modernization where they try to get you off IBMs proprietary COBOL and onto the JVM so you can save some money! [21:49] schestowitz[TR2] While very lucrative for IBM and expensive for customers, their hardware business is dying on the vine and cant keep up with the move to cloud. Theyve definitely tried to bring COBOL to the cloud, but massive, stateful, monolithic, requires 96gb of ram to run a query systems generally dont translate well to the world of stateless cloud infra. [21:49] schestowitz[TR2] IBM also made a terrible bet 15 years ago on early Watson systems, presuming that AI systems would be deterministic with hundreds of thousands of hand crafted facts hard coded into it. [21:49] schestowitz[TR2] They spent billions on Watson only to divest it as Watson Health and sell it off to private equity in 2022 for scraps, officially signaling they lost the early AI race to upstarts like OpenAI. [21:49] schestowitz[TR2] So, they massively fumbled both hardware and AI. And now they are trying to play catch up with mergers and acquisitions. If the M&As, layoffs, and new blood hiring tell you anything, its that IBM is leaning very hard into the cloud and AI future. [21:49] schestowitz[TR2] So, remember!! Its so much easier to say AI is taking jobs! Were freezing hiring!
