That would be more impressive had I not dragged Fallout 4 into my /home. [07:35] DaemonFC On that one folder (Fallout 4) BtrFS saved me 1.2 GB from the parts that compressed. But overall only reduced the size of the folder by 4%. Because those are like the game engine and such. The assets are compressed already and won't go down more so BtrFS gives up and stores them like they already are. [07:36] DaemonFC It depends largely on what you store on the volume as to what compression ratios you can expect. It's totally reasonable to subvolume and compress the root subvolume but not the home one. [07:36] DaemonFC Most of the good candidates for compression are going to go on the root outside of home anyway. [07:37] DaemonFC But it also makes sense to just apply it everywhere and let the file system decide because you will have some candidates for compression in your /home and BtrFS will skip over compressed files anyway. [07:38] DaemonFC It's a matter of some extra cycles here and there, and compressing /home really makes sense if you have a Web browser spewing cache files everywhere. [22:29] DaemonFC Someone made a Windows 10 theme for Windows XP. You'd have to crack the uxtheme.dll to apply it but presumably Microsoft won't change the dll again, in Windows XP. [22:30] DaemonFC You could make Windows XP look like nearly anything once you cracked the theme dll to remove signature enforcement. [22:30] DaemonFC I even ran into one that made it look like Ubuntu with GNOME 2. [22:32] prurigro DaemonFC: I like encryption on my laptops because if I lose it or it's stolen when I'm travelling, I don't need to worry about work stuff, ssh keys, /etc/shadow, photos of my family, personal chat logs, etc etc sitting in someone else's hands. They get a removable ssd, or if they're willing to try bruteforcing my bios password I guess they've earned themselves a fresh computer [22:32] prurigro to throw windows on or whatever [22:34] DaemonFC Yeah, most people using Truecrypt on Windows were basically pedophiles though. [22:34] DaemonFC I don't think anyone ever stepped forward to say who actually wrote it. [22:34] prurigro the airport scenario is valid too- you pretty much need to wipe if they take it out of the room, but at least they don't have access to your servers and stuff. there's more reasons than that and being a pedo lol [22:34] DaemonFC The government ended up letting some pretty nasty people go free because of it. [22:35] DaemonFC I remember this one guy refused to hand the government his decryption passphrase and so there's this federal law that says uncooperative witnesses can be held for up to 6 months in prison on contempt, but then they have to be let out. [22:35] prurigro my wife used truecrypt (and now uses veracrypt) on windows to store her clients tax data between seasons [22:36] DaemonFC He was held in contempt for refusing to give them incriminating evidence (because the Supreme Court ruled that a disk encryption passphrase is not covered by the Fifth Amendment). [22:36] DaemonFC After 6 months, they let him out with leave to refile the charges. [22:36] DaemonFC If the FBI can ever decrypt that disk, then they have indefinite leave to prosecute. So he'll be in limbo forever. [22:36] prurigro you're supposed to do your due dilligence to keep client data secure and private, and most professionals these days decide that means storing it in microsoft's cloud [22:38] prurigro yeah, I agree, criminals encrypt their stuff too, and like you say, if they aren't willing to decrypt it they end up in a limbo that basically equates to being in prison forever [22:39] prurigro but I know a lot of people who use encryption for legit reasons, and so far I've never met a pedo (knowingly) [22:40] DaemonFC Well, that's just it. [22:40] DaemonFC They get 6 months for refusing to cooperate, which beats like 10,000 years. [22:41] DaemonFC But later on the disk can be decrypted by things like weaknesses in the crypto or more powerful computers that can brute force it. [22:41] DaemonFC And then they can just be arrested again and go to prison forever at that point. [22:41] DaemonFC Plus, it doesn't look good when you have pending felonies for THAT which just can't be prosecuted right now. [22:42] DaemonFC So the guy is still basically finished. [22:42] DaemonFC He's just not in prison, yet. [22:42] DaemonFC So even if they actually can't unlock encrypted storage, they can definitely put you in prison for 6 months and then fuck up the rest of your life. [22:42] DaemonFC So if you want to use disk encryption for illegal shit, then that's something to consider. [22:43] DaemonFC I never encrypt my storage at all. It's not worth doing. [22:43] DaemonFC Encrypting stuff in transit back and forth over your Internet connection is worth doing. [22:43] prurigro I remember reading about this one guy who was basically going to be held indefinitely for not decrypting his drive [22:43] prurigro unless I misunderstood [22:44] DaemonFC You can't be held indefinitely under federal contempt laws. [22:44] DaemonFC You can only be held for 6 months. [22:44] prurigro ahh, the guy was held for 4 yers [22:44] DaemonFC In most cases that's enough to compel a witness to turn on someone. [22:44] prurigro years* [22:44] DaemonFC It may even compel you to give up and plea deal if it's not a serious crime. [22:45] DaemonFC But like, take pedos and white collar criminals. [22:45] prurigro https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2020/02/man-who-refused-to-decrypt-hard-drives-is-free-after-four-years-in-jail/ this guy looks like a pedo [22:45] TR Bot Man who refused to decrypt hard drives is free after four years in jail | Ars Technica [22:45] DaemonFC Where they could potentially go away for 20-30 years for defrauding an investor or something. [22:45] DaemonFC They like disk encryption. Compared to 30 years for securities fraud you can do 6 months standing on your head. [22:45] DaemonFC So disk encryption is mostly beneficial for the worst people. [22:46] prurigro that's only true for the narrow conditions you're presenting here [22:46] DaemonFC If I was a Martin Shkreli or a Rod Blogojevich, I would have encrypted the shit out of my shit. [22:46] DaemonFC Make them fight for every inch. Put my ass in for contempt for six months. Beats what happened to either of them. [22:47] prurigro if you aren't suspected of being a pedo and they simply steal your laptop, you don't need to go home and lock everything down and wonder what happened to all your family photos and stuff [22:47] DaemonFC Blago was a Governor of Illinois convicted for corruption. [22:47] DaemonFC He tried to auction off Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat. [22:47] prurigro you can just toss the laptop (in case of root kits) and get a new one [22:47] DaemonFC He was stupid enough to discuss it over the telephone line, which the FBI had tapped. [22:47] prurigro if you have your laptop stolen, you don't have to call all your clients and tell them their private tax data is now in the hands of someone else [22:48] DaemonFC If I was a shady politician trying to commit public corruption for fun and profit, I'd discuss it over Signal or uTox or something. [22:48] DaemonFC After I was sure of who was on the other end. [22:48] DaemonFC You can even have group chats on Tox now. [22:49] DaemonFC There's a frontend written in Qt for Linux, called qTox I believe. [22:49] DaemonFC so you can have group chats "in the dark", heavy encryption, no intermediate server that can MITM you and log everything. [22:49] DaemonFC Discussing illegal shit over on Discord is like rank amateur shit. [22:49] MinceR signal is not really reliable [22:50] prurigro you'd probably want to do tox since signal is gonna have your phone numbers [22:50] MinceR they discourage people from using anything but the binaries they themselves publish to use the service [22:50] prurigro yeah, that's a long line of sketchy things they've done [22:51] prurigro I was using their encrypted sms client with friends before they even had a communication service built into, and one day what I thought were messages travelling through sms suddenly flipped over to going over their network [22:52] prurigro then when I reset my phone I suddenly wasn't getting messages because they were going to my "account" (which I hadn't consented to creating) [22:52] prurigro that's when they lost me (it wasn't called signal yet) [22:55] prurigro then the f-droid BS and not allowing third party builds or forks on their network (it's basically closed source at that point as far as I'm concerned) [22:55] *psymin has quit (Quit: Leaving) [22:55] *psymin has quit (Quit: Leaving) [22:55] prurigro and more recently, crypto currency garbage and "stories" and yeah, I'm glad they scared me away [22:59] IPFS IPFS downstream 60 minutes average 34.13 k/sec., IPFS upstream 215.23 average k/sec., average swarm size 0 ● Sep 01 [23:04] DaemonFC https://together.jolla.com/question/75162/replacing-zram-with-zswap/ [23:04] TR Bot zram with zswap - together.jolla.com [23:04] prurigro DaemonFC: did you take a look at slackware when deciding on your new distro? [23:05] DaemonFC ZSwap makes more sense if you want to use a physical SWAP. It caches things in a compressed memory area, which can be evicted later if the memory area needs to be used. But this is more about maintaining good I/O throughput and lessening write cycles. [23:05] DaemonFC ZRam can only really avoid LRU inversion for sure when you are only swapping to it, and have no physical SWAP. [23:05] DaemonFC In this case, you don't want a physical SWAP and should make ZRam 100% of the size of RAM. [23:06] DaemonFC The more it fills up with code being swapped into it, the less RAM that code uses because it's being stored using fast compression (ZStandard, hopefully. If not, change it.) [23:06] DaemonFC Typically program code shrinks down pretty well with ZStd. [23:07] DaemonFC If it says you're swapping 300 MB, then figure that would be about 1 GB of RAM if it were all uncompressed. [23:07] DaemonFC prurigro: No, I've never used Slackware. [23:07] prurigro I've been doing zram on my new server (which has 64 gigs of ram) and it's been pretty good so far [23:07] prurigro slackware seems like a solid choice [23:08] DaemonFC If you have 16+ GB or RAM, you can probably safely use ZRam with no physical swap. The more that gets paged out, the more actual RAM you effectively have. [23:08] DaemonFC So it's like adding another 8-10 GB to a 16 GB system if it comes under extreme pressure to swap things out. [23:08] prurigro it was the best distro back in the day, I hear it has the same ethos as then but now you can get a stable rolling setup [23:09] prurigro non-corporate, systemd-free [23:09] prurigro wait, it almost doubles your available memory? [23:10] prurigro it seems to have allocated about 4 gigs on my 64 gig system [23:10] DaemonFC Raise that sucker to 1.00 :) [23:10] prurigro I guess because it's compressed eh? [23:11] prurigro I assume 1.0 is 100%? [23:11] DaemonFC The way I understand it, the reasons you won't likely "feel" system jank due to the compression is it's used sparingly as-needed of course due to "swappiness", so it may never happen at all until it needs to or the system isn't working on something anyway. [23:11] DaemonFC It also uses "streams" to split up the work to the number of processors you have (Hyperthreading included). [23:11] DaemonFC And ZStd level 1 is inherently very "cheap" computationally anyway. [23:12] DaemonFC [9/1/23 5:11 pm] I assume 1.0 is 100%? [23:12] DaemonFC If you're using the systemd-zram-generator config it is. [23:14] DaemonFC [9/1/23 5:10 pm] I guess because it's compressed eh? [23:14] DaemonFC Yeah, Zstd is about the ratio of DEFLATE only several times faster. [23:15] DaemonFC For disk compression and ZRam I tell the kernel to use level 1. Using higher levels doesn't affect the ratio much but it starts incurring a severe performance penalty. [23:16] DaemonFC Like I think one set of benchmarks I saw (before further optimizations landed later) showed that your throughput on that system would drop from 1600 MB/s to 50 between 1 and 15, although 15 only reduced the data size a further 3%. [23:16] DaemonFC So higher settings aren't worth it unless you're using .tar.zstd or something to ARCHIVE. [23:16] DaemonFC And feel like waiting a while one time while everything's going in. [23:17] DaemonFC You certainly can use DEFLATE with BtrFS or ZRam, but it would be crazy to. [23:18] DaemonFC https://pkware.cachefly.net/webdocs/APPNOTE/APPNOTE-6.3.8.TXT [23:18] DaemonFC ZIP files are permitted to use ZStandard now as of 2020, in the specification, as Codec #93. [23:19] DaemonFC But you can only count on being able to unpack it on recent ZIP software. [23:19] DaemonFC WinZIP is probably the best compression program for Windows, though it's proprietary and costs money. [23:19] DaemonFC It implements the APPNOTE specification correctly.
