This time Microsoft hid the bloat behind a requirement to buy a new computer that has TPM2 and a 2018 CPU or else it's "Unsupported" with a fake BSoD. [06:39] DaemonFC If you disable the fake system checks and install it anyway on a Windows 10 era PC, and take benchmarks it's slower. Without taking benchmarks you can feel it. [21:16] DaemonFC I put it in a Flatpak temporarily on a tertiary machine specifically so that I could remove some Microsoft Account data. I don't believe I ever did much in Edge, but when I briefly used Windows on this machine while Linux support was coming along, it may have grabbed something, because Edge is also a password stealer from other Web browsers. On some occasions, it has grabbed people's history and passwords out of other browsers while they were [21:16] DaemonFC setting up Windows, even if they told it not to do that. [21:16] DaemonFC When I was done with it, I deleted the Flatpak and erased its configuration folder under .var/app. [21:16] DaemonFC Microsoft makes it a process to wipe your data from their sync server if you want to stop using Edge. To accomplish this, you basically have to trick it. There's a button called "Reset Sync", but they hide it behind something you have to click on in the Sync page under Settings. It's really meant to be used to reset your Sync system if there's an error on Microsoft's server and it's not syncing with other copies of Microsoft Edge. [21:16] DaemonFC Classic Microsoft, instead of even trying to fix the bug, they have something that whacks the thing that's malfunctioning and then tries to upload all of your data out of the local program. [21:16] DaemonFC So what you do is, you go down about 15 toggles for syncing certain types of data, and turn them all off, then you click "Reset Sync" and once the server is cleared, it will update with all the types of data you want to sync, which is now nothing, and the server should therefore have nothing on it (but who knows what they actually keep). [21:16] DaemonFC To test this, I wiped .var/app's subfolder for Microsoft Edge with the browser closed, reopened it, signed in, and verified that logging into Sync pulled in nothing." So many that in 2020, it was shown to be the least private browser most Americans are likely to come into contact with. It sends everything to Microsoft down to your keystrokes and what sites you visit and which files you download, ostensibly for "safety" reasons. The only browser that was worse was "Yandex Browser", where a data leak from Yandex shows that the Russian Government has [21:20] DaemonFC backdoors into practically everything the company makes. The Russian government is so despotic that they don't even try to respond to it or deny it because they don't have to. Naturally, Yandex Browser has also been packaged by Flathub. [23:13] DaemonFC baronhkPost author [23:13] DaemonFC September 2, 2023 at 8:59 pm [23:13] DaemonFC Its probably a number of things including that you have to be running some tricked out unstable rolling distribution to actually see the latest code. [23:13] DaemonFC Since X11 actually works on distributions that arent bling bling for kids, maybe Ill try Wayland again in 3-4 years and see if it actually works then. The whole concept of Wayland is negative work because its just redoing things that already worked, and doing them worse. [23:13] DaemonFC Perhaps using later code could fix some of the many, numerous, problems with Wayland on KDE you get on Stable distributions, but it would come at the price of bringing in other bugs that come and go, and getting whacked with new versions of thousands of packages that havent been tested or properly integrated together. Its just here they are. They compiled, so here they are. [23:13] DaemonFC Rolling release distributions make nice toys. I read some of the Manjaro documents, including the parts about how the AUR is available, but actually using it could cause your distribution to break. Lovely. [23:13] DaemonFC Again, everything that Debian makes available from the official repos doesnt cause the entire distribution to break. You should have a large repository of software you can actually depend on. I dont think that rolling releases give you that. [23:14] DaemonFC --- [23:14] DaemonFC Maybe he threw Manjaro in there so it wouldn't be as obvious it was in defense of Red Hat. [23:14] MinceR > Rolling release distributions make nice toys.
