[05:40] DaemonFC I don't know. My mind is sort of stuck in the 80s-2000s as far as software goes. All the software I want to run has no DRM. Either it never did, the company removed it, or someone cracked it a long time ago.
[05:41] DaemonFC And a lot of it runs in emulators. It's funny how little "Linux" software I really use. Some applications, a web browser... Mostly it just gets Windows and all of the viruses and bugs and failures out of the way and lets me run my programs some other way, even if that's through emulation or non-native API simulations.
[05:42] DaemonFC Windows isn't just insecure by design, it's also exceedingly bloated. Hilariously so considering how much backwards compatibility with itself is just gone now.
[05:42] DaemonFC So it's like, where did the compatibility argument go? It's gone.
[05:43] DaemonFC And all they have is this morbidly obese OS that's full of bugs and viruses, a product of a bygone age, and they're trying to bludgeon it into a "Chromebook killer" and they really have no idea how stupid they look.
[05:44] DaemonFC I'm just twenty years ahead of everyone else I guess. 20 years ago, the psychiatrists charted that the way I dressed was sort of dumpy. I wonder how many of them are alive to get a load of this shit.
[05:45] DaemonFC I was never dumpy enough to go out to eat in my pajamas and bathrobe, but that's like half of all Americans now.
[05:45] DaemonFC Maybe I've just always been depressed enough that I didn't give a fuck, and now everyone else is catching up and I'm no longer so crazy compared with them.
[05:46] DaemonFC You have to have a gauge, ruler, yardstick, whatever, by which to judge anything.

[05:48] DaemonFC Well, earlier maybe. 12 and up.
[05:49] DaemonFC Just did it because I thought it was hilarious. It didn't technically violate the dress code because they wrote it such that as long as no part of your feet were bare, it wasn't considered wearing sandals.

[07:29] wallacer and how rare is that file?
[07:30] immibis the file possibly doesn't exist on the network, I copied something from a random tutorial just to see if IPFS worked. Is it expected that requesting a nonexistent file never finishes?
[07:30] *techrights-ipfs-bot (~techrights-ipfs-bot@suig26pxj59pi.irc) has joined #techrights
[07:30] wallacer of course, it keeps searching for it in the DHT
[07:30] wallacer "nonexistent file" is meaningless to IPFS, either it's reachable via DHT or not
[07:31] wallacer and if the file is rare or unshared as of now it will scour the DHT till the end of time to see if it can find it
[07:31] immibis well that's silly
[07:31] immibis what kind of system is that
[07:32] immibis with no possibility of failure
[07:32] wallacer my only recommendation is don't use your centralized system intuition towards distributed systems
[07:32] wallacer that just doesn't work
[07:32] immibis ok i'll try something that I know does exist
[07:32] immibis resolving the IPFS tutorial itself returned almost instantly
[07:33] wallacer also ensure you have at least IPv6 enabled so that you are directly reachable
[07:33] immibis but still wtf why is there no failure case
[07:33] immibis surely it should get to a DHT node where the file *should be* and then say "oops, it's not here"
[07:33] wallacer there's no nodes where it should be
[07:34] wallacer >When searching for some value, the algorithm needs to know the associated key and explores the network in several steps. Each step will find nodes that are closer to the key until the contacted node returns the value or no more closer nodes are found. This is very efficient: like many other DHTs, Kademlia contacts only O ( log ( n ) ) {\displaystyle O(\log(n))} O(\log(n)) nodes during the search out of a total of n {\displaystyle n} n nodes in
[07:34] wallacer the system.
[07:34] immibis isn't the DHT based on some similarity between node ID and content ID?
[07:34] wallacer I'm not sure if IPFS works this way, but this is how Kademlia works
[07:34] immibis eventually it will find the closest node, and there is no closer node, and the file isn't on that node, so there's nowhere else to look, right?
[07:34] wallacer immibis: the file may not be at the node which is the closest to the content
[07:34] immibis or does it have to try random paths to see if there's a closer node?
[07:34] wallacer it searches outwards
[07:35] wallacer plus there'll be lots of nodes that equally close to the content ID
[07:35] wallacer err it actually searches inwards from the peers your node knows about
[07:35] immibis okay well it's reasonably fast for content that does exist, so that's okay then
[07:36] immibis you think I can DOS opensea by minting some NFTs with nonexistent IPFS hashes?
[07:36] wallacer you'd have to mint a ungodly amount of NFTs
[07:36] immibis well if the search never returns
[07:36] wallacer because IPFS is also parallel, it can search for multiple things at once
[07:36] wallacer and searching isn't very computationally expensive, just high latency
[07:37] immibis and an NFT is just an index into a smart contract - it's the contract which costs money - you should be able to make one with 2^256-1 NFTs in it
[07:37] immibis maybe it even encodes the NFT index as the IPFS hash so it's a contract with every possible IPFS hash in it
[07:37] wallacer you'd be blocked by your internet b/w making requests to create OpenSea auctions
[07:38] wallacer at that point why not just flood it with random requests, you are DoSing the b/w after all
[07:40] immibis is IPFS lookup only probabilistic?

[07:47] SomeH4x0r wtf are those "\"smart\" contracts"?
[07:49] immibis SomeH4x0r: chunk of code on a blockchain, executed determistically lockstep by every node when it processes a transaction directed at the code block
[07:49] immibis s/lockstep//
[07:49] SomeH4x0r remote code execution as a feature?
[07:50] immibis obviously you do not simply execute unsandboxed blocks of x86 code. Typically it is EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine)
[07:50] immibis the only interaction allowed is with the data on the blockchain
[07:50] SomeH4x0r fork bomb
[07:50] immibis also you pay real money per instruction
[07:52] immibis an example of a smart contract would be something like an exchange. you send me 5 units of magic internet money A, I send you 10 units of magic internet money B, but they either both happen or neither
[07:52] immibis actually their data storage abilities are used to create extra types of magic internet money, since you can write a smart contract that remembers who has which amount of the magic internet money, and exposes function calls to transfer it
[07:54] immibis same with NFTs but there is no quantity. instead of the quantity you have an index of which NFT it is
[07:56] immibis wallacer: when fetching a directory, does the client try to get all the contents of the directory from the same node that was hosting the directory, or does it look them up individually?
[07:57] wallacer iirc directories are technically the same as any other piece of data in IPFS
[07:57] wallacer the UnixFS directory model is just a file that refers to other files by a name and a content hash, along with some other attributes
[07:58] wallacer and then if you further open files in that directory they will be fetched like any other

[08:01] immibis wallacer: sounds expensive to do a separate lookup for every block of data
[08:01] immibis maybe normalize storing tarballs in IPFS
[08:01] immibis instead of directories
[08:02] kingoffrance thats what freenet did , zip files
[08:02] wallacer as mentioned asking nodes on a DHT to see whether it has a file is not very computationally expensive, just high latency
[08:02] wallacer >maybe normalize storing tarballs in IPFS
[08:02] wallacer you can, just store tarballs
[08:02] wallacer there's a fundamental tradeoff here
[08:02] wallacer if you are only interested in a specific part of a tarball, you'd have to download the whole tarball
[08:02] wallacer otherwise you can't validate the hash
[08:02] wallacer but with UnixFS you can refer to a specific file
[08:03] wallacer there's the other directory model, I don't remember the name
[08:03] wallacer you can just download that part only
[08:03] wallacer if you download all files in parallel it'll probably be faster than downloading the tar because the whole tarball would have a limited swarm, and you can't pin a specific file only
[08:04] immibis aren't files already split up into blocks? you would just download the relevant blocks. so it wouldn't be any faster anyway
[08:04] immibis because you'd have to look up all the blocks
[08:04] wallacer >aren't files already split up into blocks? you would just download the relevant blocks. so it wouldn't be any faster anyway
[08:04] wallacer I'm not sure but I'm fairly sure validation of the CID hash would be problematic then
[08:04] wallacer you can't pin blocks of a file since the DHT works by CID and not block ID
[08:04] immibis the CID hash is based on the block hashes I assume
[08:05] immibis or is that done at a lower level. Seems silly to do it at a separate level from directories

[15:40] XRevan86 They watch Telegram channels like a hawk.

[15:44] activelow the recent political and economic agenda to attack NorthStream2 doesn't benefit the Kremlin
[15:44] XRevan86 Do they mean that?
[15:45] activelow i suspect this, USA are desparate to source new Oil/Gas resources, after the fracking boom ceased; and try to control public broadcasting
[15:46] XRevan86 activelow: NorthStream2 has one agenda only: to pump gas to Europe not through Ukraine.
[15:46] activelow some geo-strategic clusterfuck made in USA, this is it, not Kremlin (although i am not a "fan" of theirs nor their TV)
[15:47] activelow XRevan86: yes, and this is what USA foreign policy tries to capitalize upon, and too "EU", because the Gas sold by russia is ~10% of the "re-seller" prize in EU
[15:49] activelow anyway, i've got the feeling, shutting down international TV broadcasters (the russian ones, and next a german one), this is far worse "news" than i expected, in preparation of something i wouldn't know yet, what USA and their minions prepared for, internationally
[15:49] activelow better to say, washington
[15:50] activelow the entire "renewable" energy is a propaganda scam anyway, because energy isn't renewable, it is related costs for sourcing, storage, and transport, always, besides other side effects concerning nature
