[01:02] XRevan86 DaemonFC: I already mentioned that here. [01:02] DaemonFC And now they're being shot trying to loot Ukrainian grocery stores trying to find food. [01:03] XRevan86 Isn't it amazing that just like Putin couldn't organise a country, he couldn't organise a war? [01:04] psydroid8 what was his goal with all of this? [01:06] XRevan86 psydroid8: Obviously he was too optimistic about his capabilities. [01:06] XRevan86 psydroid8: The goal is having Ukraine as a vassal state. [01:06] DaemonFC They'll keep fighting until it's one guy left with a stick. [01:06] DaemonFC And that's why Putin won't get that. [01:07] XRevan86 psydroid8: A one that would have no complaints about what Russia's doing, including the Crimean question. [01:07] DaemonFC Putin's propaganda about how they would welcome the Russian invaders to "unify" them was at least as idiotic as George W. Bush's statement that Iraqi citizens would welcome American soldiers "with flowers, as liberators". [01:08] psydroid8 XRevan86, was this the final opportunity before fading into irrelevance? [01:08] DaemonFC And then we got a bunch of IEDs. <---- Not flowers. [01:09] XRevan86 psydroid8: The status quo wasn't stable, he would've had to back off eventually. [01:09] DaemonFC If the United States couldn't win against an insurgency of people who just didn't want us there who had relatively little to fight us with, what made Putin think he'd pull this off? [01:09] DaemonFC The Russian military is obsolete and it has a lot of equipment that's in serious disrepair as well. [01:11] XRevan86 psydroid8: Evidently he decided that he can force Ukraine to give in with minimal damage. [01:11] DaemonFC Fox News says there's scattered toys in some of the rubble. [01:11] DaemonFC They'd better treat those as IEDs. [01:12] DaemonFC The Russians would drop toys with small bombs in them to maim children with in Afghanistan. [01:12] DaemonFC They'd run out to get the toys and the bomb would go off and take an arm, a leg, an eye. [01:12] DaemonFC The Russians weren't trying to kill the kids, but to maim them. To create a burden for the parents. [01:12] XRevan86 psydroid8: I just sit in a flat and read public news and even I understand that this was not meant to happen. [01:13] XRevan86 While Putin, the great and powerful leader with secret intelligence, is thinking right now "how did this happen?". [01:14] DaemonFC So the Russian military all deserves to die. [01:14] psydroid8 XRevan86, I appreciate the perspective from Russia (not necessarily on behalf of Russia) [01:14] DaemonFC That they would operate in such ways, they all deserve death. [01:15] DaemonFC So I hope Ukraine continues to kill many of them. They deserve to have bodies going back home so that, you know, maybe another 40 years will go by before they get more funny ideas. [01:16] DaemonFC And it's very important for the ones responsible to be indicted at the International Criminal Court. [01:16] DaemonFC Even if they never get arrested, it will make sure that if they leave Russia, they are in danger of being arrested and extradited as war criminals. [01:17] DaemonFC It would make life harder for them because they don't actually care about their own country very much. [01:17] DaemonFC They operate like Fulgencio Batista did in Cuba, that's how Putin operates. [01:18] DaemonFC They whore the country out, take the money for themselves, and hide it in other countries. [01:18] psydroid8 I'm more interested in the reasons why Russia can't develop itself as other countries in the vicinity seen to be doing [01:18] psydroid8 seem* [01:19] DaemonFC Batista was driven out of Cuba in the uprising and he never was able to come back home, but he lived out the rest of his life on stolen wealth in various places, including the US. [01:19] DaemonFC And that's why Putin wanted his money spread all over the world. [01:19] DaemonFC In case he was driven out of Russia. [01:19] XRevan86 psydroid8: One word: corruption. Or "Putin". Pick either, they're practically synonyms anyway. [01:20] DaemonFC He may say he doesn't care about the banishments taking place right now, but he does. [01:20] DaemonFC It limits his retirement options when the Russian people revolt and want to kill him and he has to leave. [01:22] psydroid8 XRevan86, why haven't we seen another revolution during the past few decades? [01:22] XRevan86 psydroid8: Effective discouragement. [01:25] XRevan86 psydroid8: Russia has lived through a very rough patch, but in the 2000s it got lucky, and that economical change coincided with a political change towards authoritarianism. [01:25] DaemonFC "While Venezuela could not formally vote at the session because it has not paid its dues to the UN for several years, it almost assuredly would have voted against the resolution or abstained if given the chance." [01:25] DaemonFC LOL [01:26] DaemonFC Richard Stallman usually points at Latin American countries like this when he wants to copy some policy that drove them to eat zoo animals cooked over a trash can fire. [01:26] psydroid8 I've just found some documentary series about the history of Russia, which I'll try to watch over the next few days [01:26] XRevan86 psydroid8: And for some unfortunate reason that got cemented into the minds of the people that this is how things should be to avoid more hardship, a xarte blanche. [01:26] XRevan86 * carte [01:27] DaemonFC Ukraine drove out Yanukovich, who had been using stolen public wealth to amuse himself with things like a private zoo. [01:27] DaemonFC One of the things that happened after he fled to Russia was that the zoo animals got out and were frolicking all over the streets of Kyiv. [01:27] MinceR 03 021840 < psydroid8> I'm more interested in the reasons why Russia can't develop itself as other countries in the vicinity seen to be doing [01:27] MinceR the reason is called "United Russia" [01:28] XRevan86 And slowly but surely all that economical luck faded away and just started reverting to the shit times, but just not quickly enough. [01:29] XRevan86 So basically Russia had a moment of prosperity, and all that wealth was used to make the country less bearable to live in. [01:30] XRevan86 At least Turkmenistan has a marble city. [01:30] MinceR lol @ venevuvuzela [01:30] psydroid8 why was "United but Destroyed India" able to forge ahead where "United Russia" couldn't? [01:30] psydroid8 lol [01:31] MinceR presumably the fundies have only recently taken over india so they didn't have enough time to destroy their country yet [01:31] XRevan86 And at least part of that wealth is now confiscated by the foreign powers. [01:33] XRevan86 psydroid8: I could approach this from another angle: the Russian people haven't learnt the lesson that they have to defend themselves against the leadership. To say no to power. [01:34] psydroid8 if only a fraction of that wealth had been reinvested in local industry Russia's economy would have been much more diversified by now [01:34] XRevan86 And they kind of learnt the opposite when the union collapsed, that going against leadership will bring dark times. [01:34] psydroid8 although that may be overly simplistic from my side [01:35] MinceR i don't think any people have learned that lesson [01:35] XRevan86 psydroid8: Russia absolutely had a chance to become a very powerful country, but it instead decided to become a banana republic. [01:37] XRevan86 MinceR: Ukraine is a bright counterexample. [01:38] DaemonFC schestowitz-TR2, Mozilla is running ads for Disney movies on their website now. [01:38] MinceR right, that might be true [01:39] XRevan86 psydroid8: Russia could've been a country instrumental to the economy of the entire region, but it decided that it needs to scare everyone away but being a corrupt and unreliable partner. [01:39] *u-amarsh04 has quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!) [01:40] psydroid8 XRevan86, is there any hope that the damage done can be undone or forgotten within several decades? [01:40] XRevan86 The partners Russia does have are either hostages or corrupt authoritarians or both. [01:40] MinceR well, greater damage can be done that makes it irrelevant [01:40] XRevan86 psydroid8: Literally none. [01:41] XRevan86 Russia lost its chance and it will never become as prosperous as it could've been without Putin. [01:43] XRevan86 Maybe there will be another, but if that's the case then that alternative universe Russia would have two instead of one at that point. [01:44] *u-amarsh04 (~amarsh04@hngiv8sdpiaf2.irc) has joined #techrights [01:44] psydroid8 Russia also seems to have a policy of Russification of neighbouring countries [01:44] psydroid8 I wonder what's up with that [01:45] MinceR presumably vladolf doesn't want his people to get ideas [01:45] MinceR also, there's that "buffer zone" bullshit [01:45] XRevan86 psydroid8: It's not something consistent. [01:46] XRevan86 Kazakhstan is doing derussification and no one cares. [01:47] XRevan86 psydroid8: In general, Russia doesn't care. I could be wrong, but my understanding is that this is how Russia is doing foreign affairs. [01:58] XRevan86 psydroid8: The thing to keep in mind here is that unlike European countries, Russia likes to collaborate in secret in a pretty corrupt way. [01:58] DaemonFC Even before Putin got them on everyone's shitlist, the Russian economy was about 20% smaller than Italy's. [01:59] XRevan86 psydroid8: So look at Russia's internal affairs and project this approach to foreign affairs. ● Mar 03 [02:00] DaemonFC https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_ruble#100-ruble_bill_controversy [02:00] TR Bot Russian ruble - Wikipedia [02:00] DaemonFC They were angry that a piece of art was going to corrupt the children? Russia spends billions but instead of success the ties with Russia are often severed. Pretty ironic. [02:09] XRevan86 Armenia is a weird one here. [02:10] XRevan86 They threw out the Kremlin-controlled government, but they're still under heavy Russian influence. [02:11] XRevan86 Usually it ends differently, with Russia getting yet another enemy on its border. [02:11] XRevan86 The most vicious enemies are former friends. [02:13] psydroid8 Because they realise being allied with or under the influence of Russia holds them back? [02:13] XRevan86 psydroid8: Corruption always holds one back. [02:13] XRevan86 So yea, "empire" is a bit of an exaggeration in my opinion :) [02:14] XRevan86 A bloc at best. [02:14] psydroid8 I read a few articles a few years ago saying that Kazakhstan wanted to become a highly developed country by 2050 [02:15] XRevan86 Don't know about "highly" but they're doing all right. [02:16] XRevan86 Also depends on whether Tokayev will become an eternal president. [02:17] psydroid8 Russia can't do the same things to do the "same" all right? [02:17] XRevan86 Even with the protest crushing, the transfer of leadership away from Nazarbayev is ultimately a positive. [04:31] DaemonFC If you look at the IRS's own statistics, they spend enormous portions of their audit money attacking families who make $0-60,000 a year, and then don't bother with the rich, who will have plenty of attorneys, accountants, and usage of the 1998 "Taxpayer Bill of Rights". [04:31] DaemonFC Everyone who is too poor to fight gets the audits because they're more likely to give up and sign a CP2000 letter and pay anything the IRS says that they owe. [04:31] DaemonFC In fact, fully half the audits the IRS does these days are against poor people, mostly with children, who claim the Earned Income Credit. Which is despicable. Possibly also why they have a 36% approval rate. Worse than the TSA. [04:31] DaemonFC At the least, they shouldn't get more audit money until there's also a bill that will force them to focus on "wealthy tax cheats", like they did before the "wealthy tax cheats" bought the Taxpayer Bill of Rights in 1998, which they use to dispute the audits. [04:32] DaemonFC The IRS also admits that they're incompetent. In one case, I read an Inspector General's report that they could quit losing $60 million a year in revenue if they spent $400,000 once to upgrade the system causing the problem. Yet they haven't. [04:32] DaemonFC Meanwhile, they've turned cryptocurrency reporting into a complete disaster, deliberately, to kneecap a threat to a system to store value which they can't hyperinflate to steal all of your meager savings.
