[21:00] DaemonFC Too much software, too many plastic parts. [21:00] DaemonFC The ones that are still metal are aluminum, not steel and cast iron. [21:00] DaemonFC It's a beer can with some plastic and computer software that pretends it's an engine. [21:01] DaemonFC Then people wonder why you turn the key and they explode like a bomb. [21:01] DaemonFC They're not well made. [21:01] admfubar new cars do not explode like a bomb [21:02] DaemonFC Yeah, tell that to the two KIA owners I saw in the span of two weeks in 2020. [21:02] DaemonFC One exploded at Walmart, the other exploded outside of where I was living at the time. [21:02] DaemonFC Looked like 9/11 in the parking lot. [21:02] DaemonFC Papers flying around everywhere. Black smoke billowing out. [21:03] DaemonFC Now Honda, you know Honda right? They're saying stop driving the car and get it "software updated" so it can detect if the engine will likely explode....and turn on a warning light. [21:03] DaemonFC And go into limp mode. [21:03] DaemonFC Because tearing down an engine to get the aluminum shavings out and replace rods is expensive. [21:04] DaemonFC And software to put them in limp mode if the car thinks it's about to 9/11 itself is cheap. [21:04] DaemonFC :) [21:05] DaemonFC They have 12 year old illegal immigrants working in car factories down in Alabama and Georgia, Kia and Hyundai do. [21:05] DaemonFC Slapping together plastic engines that explode. [21:05] DaemonFC Fucking garbaaaage. [21:06] DaemonFC Then if your engine needs the smallest bit of work God help you. [21:06] DaemonFC They put the ignition coils in the middle of the shit sandwich that calls itself an engine. [21:06] DaemonFC So if one goes bad, they have to take half the engine apart. [21:06] DaemonFC And you may as well replace coils there's nothing wrong with because they're all exposed now that the engine is apart. [21:07] DaemonFC And now you owe the mechanic for 4.5 labor hours plus whatever they mark the coils up to. [21:07] MinceR presumably fixing an engine that went into limp mode and stayed in one piece is easier than fixing one that exploded [21:07] MinceR s/easier/cheaper/ [21:07] DaemonFC $30 apiece at retail for the 3800 V6 and they're all right there and you can swap them out with a wrench. [21:08] DaemonFC If they go bad on the 3.6 or 3.9 that GM replaced it with, that's a $1,800 job at the shop. [21:08] DaemonFC vs. $80-90 in your front yard on my car. [21:08] DaemonFC Parts from Amazon. [21:09] DaemonFC MinceR, What they do is they make the software detect the condition, presumably, and then they put it in limp mode until you can get to the dealer, and then they extend the warranty on that engine to 15 years, 150,000 miles instead of the 10 year 100,000, but only if you get it serviced. [21:09] DaemonFC So if anything (not just that problem) happens, you have another 5 years, 50,000 miles on the warranty. [21:09] DaemonFC That's not a super shitty deal I guess. [21:10] DaemonFC MinceR, I would be religious about changing the oil and air filters on time for the entire span of the extended warranty. [21:10] DaemonFC You don't want them to cancel the warranty and say you didn't have documentation about your air filters. [21:10] DaemonFC :) [21:11] DaemonFC They would do that, of course. [21:14] DaemonFC You can pull almost any motor oil they sell off the shelf these days and use it. [21:14] DaemonFC It doesn't have to be synthetic. [21:14] DaemonFC That's extremely uncommon for an engine that they were making up to like 2020. [21:15] DaemonFC Unless of course you got the one with a turbo. [21:15] DaemonFC If you have a turbo I'd recommend full synthetic that has GM's dexos 1 gen 3 on the bottle. It's formulated to avoid deposits in the turbocharger, and LSPI, which can cause engine knock. [21:16] DaemonFC Deposits in the turbo are seriously bad news. [21:17] DaemonFC Older engines were more forgiving of deposits here and there and they may in fact even "help". [21:17] DaemonFC As seals and gaskets age, deposits in them used to be helpful in that they'd plug the hole and prevent oil leaks from getting really bad. [21:17] DaemonFC A guy I was dating for a while got a Dodge Grand Caravan with almost 400,000 miles on it. [21:17] DaemonFC No oil consumption to speak of. [21:18] DaemonFC Some guy at Jiffy Lube said he should flush the engine. [21:18] DaemonFC Trouble is, the flush exposed all the oil leaks when it washed all the deposits out of the gaskets and seals and piston heads. [21:18] DaemonFC The thing started leaking and burning so much oil that he had to put in two quarts a week just to keep it level. [21:19] DaemonFC If you're not having trouble out of a car don't flush the motor. You can get all kinds of trouble going that you didn't have before. High mileage engines that are running okay? Just keep driving it and pray it lasts however long it can. [21:20] IPFS () Planet Gemini updated. I'm not really sure I'd recommend that. [21:21] DaemonFC Adds $10 to the bill and maybe it corrects a minor problem or maybe it's the end of an engine that's still getting you around okay and would for years. [21:22] DaemonFC There's not really much you can do after you expose all the leaks. You could pay a mechanic to tear the whole engine apart top to bottom and rebuild it. [21:23] DaemonFC The 3800 V6, if you're leaking oil out of one of these, the first place to start looking is the pan gasket. Those aren't horrific to change out. [21:23] DaemonFC You can get a pretty hefty leak going down there and if that's all that's wrong with it, just replace it. [21:24] DaemonFC Then the oil pressure switch. These are mostly plastic and are quite common to have crack and start dripping oil after about 15+ years, which all of them that are on the road now are. [21:24] DaemonFC That one's only about $30 for the sensor. [21:25] DaemonFC You have to remember that gravity is going to be your enemy here, so once you get a leak it doesn't have to be a "big gap" if it's something on the bottom of the engine. [21:28] DaemonFC MinceR, The Federal Election Commission has basically broken down. [21:28] DaemonFC About the only thing it does now is deadlock on every enforcement vote and cost money. [21:28] DaemonFC And the only election crime anyone can manage to be charged with is lying to them. [21:28] DaemonFC So of course George Santos managed to do that. [21:29] DaemonFC The Supreme Court managed to gut the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform law. [21:30] DaemonFC So even if the FEC doesn't manage to deadlock, there's not much left to enforce anyway. [21:46] DaemonFC At a plant owned by Hwashin America Corp, a supplier to the two car brands in the south Alabama town of Greenville, a 14-year-old Guatemalan girl worked this May assembling auto body components, according to interviews with her father and law enforcement officials. [21:48] DaemonFC They had to replace it under warranty. [21:48] DaemonFC When I got it back, it didn't work. They never checked to see if the air conditioner they just replaced worked. [21:48] DaemonFC Then I popped the hood and it turned out to be a broken fuse wire and I pointed at it. [21:48] DaemonFC So they replaced that and billed Kia again. [21:49] DaemonFC There was probably nothing else wrong with the air conditioner. And maybe the dealer even defrauded Kia. [21:49] DaemonFC John says that by the time it was stolen in May this year, the key sometimes wouldn't start the car. [21:50] DaemonFC But when the crackhead bashed the window out and ripped the steering column apart and did the "USB cable" trick, which works because Kia is the only company that doesn't put security systems in their cars, it fired right up for the crackhead. [21:50] DaemonFC Kia's are bad cars and they don't age well. [21:51] DaemonFC When you get one, if you can get a reputable extended warranty I'd recommend it, but a lot of dealers don't go through the factory because some company in Chicago that doesn't answer the phone or pay out the claims bribed them more. [21:51] DaemonFC But it's better to just get a Toyota and take the hit up front. [21:51] DaemonFC Kia's have gotten a lot more expensive without improving at all in quality. [21:51] DaemonFC So the cost difference between a Kia and a Toyota that will actually be on the road for a while is only a few thousand dollars now. [21:52] DaemonFC And Toyota puts a security system in the car so it's unlikely to be stolen in such a way that you stopped hearing about with American cars in 1995 or so. [21:53] DaemonFC In 1995, GM put Passkey I in most of the cars that model year and it stopped pretty much all of the amateurs that could jump in and hotwire the system before. [21:53] DaemonFC But Kias are as easy to steal as the majority of 1994 and older GM vehicles. [21:53] DaemonFC Passkey I had a pellet in the car key, and while the system wasn't perfect, it was enough to deter about 90% of the people out there who were stealing cars. [21:54] DaemonFC Kids didn't have all the possible immobilizer pellets and they'd need to sit out there with dozens of them trying them one at a time. With the system locking the fuel pump for 10 minutes every third time the thing didn't match. [21:55] DaemonFC So it was good enough for car theft to come crashing down on GM cars as soon as the majority on the road had at least that level of security. [21:55] DaemonFC Passkey III is what my 2008 Buick has. [21:55] DaemonFC It's a laser-cut key with a transponder chip in the head. [21:55] DaemonFC Without both, you're not going anywhere. [21:56] DaemonFC MinceR, I saved the key that turns but doesn't start the car that I filed and won the arbitration case against the Indian guy about, and got my money back. [21:57] DaemonFC If one of my GM keys (I have two of those) breaks and I have at least the head, I can hold the head near the ignition while turning the physical key from the crooked Indian guy at the mall and the car starts. [21:57] DaemonFC MinceR, So I've seen that happen before where the head breaks off a car kay. [21:58] DaemonFC I could remove the rest of the key from the cylinder barrel and then gorilla tape the head from that key onto the one the Indian guy cut where the transponder chip isn't accepted. [21:58] DaemonFC And together I'd have a working key again. [21:59] DaemonFC Don't go anywhere but the dealer for car keys. [21:59] DaemonFC The Batteries Plus Bulbs guy at the mall goes fucking with your car and you'll be lucky if you don't end up calling for a tow. ● Dec 03 [22:00] DaemonFC He tried to fight my arbitration case, but I had more evidence that he bungled the job because I had the dealership write a letter to Mastercard about how he managed to fuck up the anti-theft system and what they had to do to make it work properly again.
