psydroidAnd more and more cities and countries are moving away from WindowsJun 05 20:07
oiaohmWe will have to wait and see.  Some in the past have threatend to move away from Windows to get really good deal for 5 years or so.Jun 05 20:17
DaemonFC[m]Linux distributions seem to have a very serious NIH thing going on sometimes too.Jun 05 20:37
DaemonFC[m]I'm shocked that the support for Musepack and Wavpack aren't better.Jun 05 20:37
DaemonFC[m]Both are available under FOSS licenses. The Musepack license is LGPL and the Wavpack license is a BSD-style license.Jun 05 20:37
DaemonFC[m]Fedora packages Wavpack but Musepack is still at the old SV7 bitstream and just gets bumped and rebuilt occasionally.Jun 05 20:38
DaemonFC[m]Conceptually, it appears that Musepack is a much simpler format than MP3 or even Vorbis and it also has lower delay with better quality.Jun 05 20:39
DaemonFC[m]Compression efficiency is not quite as high as Opus, but the complexity of the codec is much lower (it operates in the time domain exclusively and essentially adds various advanced features to the MP2 format).Jun 05 20:40
DaemonFC[m]Avoiding the MDCT entirely gives Musepack slightly lower efficiency, but much lower computational complexity and it avoids sometimes nasty MDCT artifacts (which can sometimes lower compression efficiency if you want to stop and deal with them).Jun 05 20:41
DaemonFC[m]Any cheap DSP that is capable of MP3 decode should theoretically have no problem with MPC because the decode time is less than half of MP3's while maintaining superior audio quality.Jun 05 20:42
DaemonFC[m]MP3 has long blocks to deal with artifacts like pre and post-echo, but the blocks are so long that they hinder compression efficiency. Which is why you see the bitrate go way up sometimes momentarily on areas where it has to switch to long blocks that are trying to deal with to many samples.Jun 05 20:44
oiaohmDaemonFC[m]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musepack  technically in development terms dead. Jun 05 20:46
-TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-en.wikipedia.org | Musepack - WikipediaJun 05 20:46
DaemonFC[m]Well, it does what it does.Jun 05 20:46
DaemonFC[m]At a certain point in something like this, it doesn't need new features.Jun 05 20:46
oiaohmThere are known CVE issues in musepack as well.Jun 05 20:48
oiaohmSo dead to the point you should not be using it.Jun 05 20:48
oiaohmAlso when it comes to SV7 and SV8 with wavpack and musepack neither of those in fact does those instead outsourced that to libavJun 05 20:48
oiaohmOpps I had that backwards.Jun 05 20:50
oiaohmDaemonFC[m]: there is a lot of trial and error.Jun 05 20:54
oiaohmhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec_2   Also its important to ask what the codec is designed for as well.   Codec 2 is really useless with music.Jun 05 20:56
-TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-en.wikipedia.org | Codec 2 - WikipediaJun 05 20:56
DaemonFC[m]David Bryant fixes security issues in WavPack, but most of them are impossible to exploit to do any actual harm.Jun 05 20:58
DaemonFC[m]You can't play Wavpack files in a web browser, for example, so remote attacks against the codec are not really on the table here.Jun 05 20:58
oiaohmThat because it still maintained.Jun 05 20:59
DaemonFC[m]He just fixes them as they are programming errors, but they're not really dangerous to the user.Jun 05 20:59
oiaohmNot 100 percent true.  Freepbx can in fact use wavpack over sip.Jun 05 21:00
oiaohmSo flaws in wavpack can cause remote security flaws for asterisk/freepbx servers.Jun 05 21:00
DaemonFC[m]I'm sure that North Korea will get right on that. ;PJun 05 21:00
oiaohmUnfortantly that is mostly like true not a joke.Jun 05 21:01
psydroidwhy have the vulnerabilities in musepack not been fixed? is it unmaintained at this point?Jun 05 21:01
psydroidoh, the last release was in 2011Jun 05 21:03
oiaohmpsydroid: musepack not been maintained since 2011 upstream.      Of course some distributions have applied some patches in their downstream maintainers but it not being synced those patches are not properly peer reviewed for being done properly either.Jun 05 21:03
psydroidbut why would you even use that anymore if there are better alternatives these days? Jun 05 21:03
oiaohmBasically normal bit rot screw everyone over point.Jun 05 21:04
DaemonFC[m]People might have large collections of music in the format and not want to transcode it.Jun 05 21:04
DaemonFC[m]You only get to transcode without generation loss if it's from a lossless format to another lossless format.Jun 05 21:05
DaemonFC[m]MP3 is basically a safe assumption that you'd never need to transcode again because it's very old and widely accepted.Jun 05 21:06
DaemonFC[m]Now with the patents dead there's no terribly strong argument for Vorbis.Jun 05 21:06
oiaohmReally there are 3 reasons.   1) existing collection of music.   2) since distributions still provide it not having to recode applications. Jun 05 21:06
DaemonFC[m]Google considers Vorbis deprecated.Jun 05 21:07
oiaohmand of course the old school not knowing better.Jun 05 21:07
DaemonFC[m]It might disappear from Android. Who knows?Jun 05 21:07
oiaohmmp3 is not 100 percent patent dead yet.Jun 05 21:07
DaemonFC[m]There's no strong argument for yanking out Vorbis, but people would raise hell if their MP3s became unusable.Jun 05 21:07
oiaohmhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3_Surround   << 5.1 in mp3 anyone we cannot do that without paying for patents for a few more years.Jun 05 21:08
-TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-en.wikipedia.org | MP3 Surround - WikipediaJun 05 21:08
oiaohmMp3 is getting close to 100 percent patent free the current 95+% patent free is good enough for most people.Jun 05 21:09
DaemonFC[m]Nobody used MP3 Surround anyway.Jun 05 21:11
DaemonFC[m]It was like that MP3 Pro thing that was never standardized by anyone.Jun 05 21:11
oiaohmTo be correct working mp3 surround would be good for old playstation game emulators.Jun 05 21:12
oiaohmMp3 surrond was in fact used and there is content out there in it.Jun 05 21:12
oiaohmBut Mp3 surrond plays with a normal mp3 player just as 2 channel instead of it 5.1 or 7.1Jun 05 21:13
oiaohmDaemonFC[m]: Playstation 3 games some of those use Mp3 surround.Jun 05 21:15
oiaohmI cannot name any existing MP3 Pro content out there.Jun 05 21:15
psydroidDoes it even make sense to fork Musepack at this point, especially when you have no understanding of codecs and how they are implemented?Jun 05 21:21
psydroidI guess that has been the problem with distributions as well and why they haven't done that themselvesJun 05 21:22
DaemonFC[m]So it's a stereo downmix.Jun 05 21:30
DaemonFC[m]That's not so bad.Jun 05 21:30
DaemonFC[m]<psydroid "Does it even make sense to fork "> My guess is that Opus being an IETF standard and working out most of the problems with the prior round of pure MDCT codecs will suck the wind out of that.Jun 05 21:31
DaemonFC[m]If Musepack needs anything, it's probably a good resampler built into the encoder binary and maybe support for reading WavPack files. Jun 05 21:33
DaemonFC[m]LAME has a resampler, but they warn that using SoX first is better.Jun 05 21:33
DaemonFC[m]Musepack should natively support 48,000 Hz sampling because MP2 did and why remove that?Jun 05 21:33
DaemonFC[m]That's kind of a corner case though. LAME never heavily optimized the psy model code for that, though it seems to work okay.Jun 05 21:34
DaemonFC[m]There's a decent FOSS AAC codec, but it's not GPL compatible, so you have to build a copy of ffmpeg that can't be redistributed like that to use it.Jun 05 21:36
DaemonFC[m]Lossy audio coding is a real mess in terms of corner cases, implementation, problems with the standards themselves, etc. Probably the safe choice for compatibility is MP3 with latest copy of LAME, and for quality, Opus.Jun 05 21:37
psydroidI must say I never really used any of these codecs except during the brief time I had an MP3 playerJun 05 21:37
DaemonFC[m]Yeah, I just moved all my FLAC stuff to WavPack format to exploit slightly better compression ratios.Jun 05 21:37
DaemonFC[m]256 GB SD cards are like $30 now. So lossless is doable.Jun 05 21:37
DaemonFC[m]In terms of dollar value of space, WavPack only saves you about $1.50 in storage space on a 256 GB device, but the real value is that you can store 3% more music on that device and they're not exactly easy to swap in and out of your phone.Jun 05 21:38
