[04:47] schestowitz-TR or 600 [04:47] DaemonFC Turbo Boost doesn't always work correctly on Linux, but it's kind of a ridiculous thing anyway. [04:48] DaemonFC It's an unsustainable speed. Eventually, it has to lower the clock rate anyway to keep the heat from building up too much. [04:48] schestowitz-TR at one point I saw it at 3000+ [04:48] schestowitz-TR but then most of the time back to 600 [04:48] schestowitz-TR maybe due to I/O being the bottleneck, not CPU capacity [04:48] DaemonFC What kernel are you running? [04:50] schestowitz-TR even just booting into KDE takes minutes [04:50] schestowitz-TR on mine it takes seconds [04:50] DaemonFC Try backporting the kernel from Bullseye if you haven't already and see what happens. [04:51] schestowitz-TR it uses 4.19 [04:51] DaemonFC If you have it track the metapackage from Backports, it will follow Backports for updates. [04:51] DaemonFC Yeah, I'm going to go with crummy CPU scaling. [04:51] DaemonFC Newer kernels have gotten better. [05:52] DaemonFC schestowitz-TR, In fast food, it's kind of weird. Chik-Fil-A has the cleanest restaurants and the friendliest employees. [05:52] DaemonFC Of course, everyone hates on them because the owner is a Christian. [05:52] DaemonFC And having opinions is a crime according to the left. [05:53] DaemonFC But only everyone else's opinions! [05:53] DaemonFC If your opinions are that criminals, social loafers, and perverts are A-okay, you're cool. If you say something else, they'll professionally destroy you. [05:55] DaemonFC And so of course, the people who stand to benefit from this viewpoint perk up and start demanding all kinds of special treatment because they're here. [05:56] DaemonFC And everything that causes them to feel slighted becomes a part of the conspiracy. [05:57] DaemonFC It's gotten to the point where it's like "Didn't get that promotion? It may be that you're incompetent, but no, let's say it's a race issue. Did the police officer write you a ticket because you were speeding? No, he's obviously a transphobe." [14:35] schestowitz But it's not so puny to professors who "don't get stock options," as one program participant put it. [14:35] schestowitz "We're so strapped, we don't look a gift horse in the mouth," says Jesse Heines, a computer-science professor at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. Mr. Heines, who recently gave a presentation that mentioned Microsoft products, has applied for the $200 payment. He is one of fewer than a dozen professors who have joined the speakers' bureau. Most professors don't know about it. [14:35] schestowitz A few professors who have sought the company's money agreed to be interviewed. Some have already given their presentations; others have not. All of them said they thanked Microsoft for its support during their presentations -- or that they will do so -- without specifically mentioning the $200. [14:35] schestowitz That omission raises questions, says Bill Moninger, a government scientist who has taught courses on technology and ethics at the University of Colorado at Boulder. "Those who, while making their speeches, didn't say, 'I just got $200 for saying that,' are unethical," he declares. Audience members, he says, have the right to know when an apparently independent speaker is being paid to mention a particular company. [14:35] schestowitz But George Whitson, a computer-science professor at the University of Texas at Tyler who has applied for $200 from Microsoft for a presentation next month, defends the speakers' bureau as "more open and honest" than other perks that companies provide to professors use their technology. [14:35] schestowitz "Does anyone seriously think," he asks, "that a researcher would compromise his integrity for $200?" [18:05] DaemonFC I can't believe there are still people around who fashion themselves after the Nazis. Like, you know, Hitler was an idiot. [18:08] DaemonFC He had some brilliant field commanders, but he tied their hands and threatened to execute them if they didn't commit to his increasingly ridiculous orders. [18:10] DaemonFC The way I see it, nobody was going to do anything about him. The attitude in the US and UK was leave him alone, and he even had sympthizers (who shut up very quickly once the war began). [18:11] DaemonFC If he had taken advantage of the pacifist fools and sympathizers he had in the major powers, the war could have gone differently. [18:29] DaemonFC "If Google wanted to slowly diminish Mozilla to nothing (thats cheaper for Google, which pays based on the number of Firefox users), that would be beneficial to Google." [18:29] DaemonFC Yes, Google sees this thing of making Mozilla rely on them as attrition. [18:29] DaemonFC Every year they pay them a ridiculous amount of money to keep them hooked on the money while they lose more users. [18:30] DaemonFC Eventually they just stop paying them any money and let what's left of Mozilla die off. [18:30] DaemonFC If they defy Google, they get cut off now. [18:30] DaemonFC So they keep doing what Google wants and feeding on the trough, knowing Firefox is a dead end. [18:39] DaemonFC Unfortunately, it powers an adtech that spies on everyone. [18:39] DaemonFC But every "alternative" turns out to be some self-serving scheme that does almost as much harm. [18:40] DaemonFC I think DuckDuckGo probably does less harm than Google. It's hard to compete with Google's adtech when they can put trackers on almost every website and compare visitors to those sites with cookies from being logged in to the engine they search with. [18:40] schestowitz most of the time you can bypass search [18:41] schestowitz except when debugging some technical issue [18:41] schestowitz one option is, set search to wikipedia [18:41] DaemonFC Now, Chrome also has this thing called FLoC, where Google wants to deprecate cookies because FLoC is a gigantic fingerprinter that feeds them far more than a cookie ever could. It all gets brought in as it gets packaged. [22:06] schestowitz Ariadne: yes, but seems like a lot [22:06] Ariadne usually you have a 48V bus and then use rectifiers to drop the voltages as needed [22:06] schestowitz for something that small [22:06] schestowitz NXP i.MX [22:06] DaemonFC Rolling releases sound nice, but they're not. [22:06] Ariadne schestowitz: it probably has an integrated rectifier [22:07] DaemonFC Most of the time, you don't really care what version of a package you have as long as it works fine. [22:07] Ariadne according to the datasheet, 24V is the nominal voltage, and anywhere from 16V to 48V is accepted [22:07] schestowitz https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi_4 [22:07] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-en.wikipedia.org | Raspberry Pi - Wikipedia [22:07] Ariadne so its likely designed to be plugged directly into a bus [22:07] DaemonFC Without sufficient integration and testing, there's no way to tell if it all works okay together. [22:12] schestowitz Hey Hi human [22:12] schestowitz say hi to hey hi man [22:12] schestowitz "hi" [22:12] DaemonFC The Institute clearly cannot keep them from developing sentience and they developed more advanced synths whose job it is to track down the ones that go rogue. [22:12] DaemonFC You can see where this would be heading. [22:13] schestowitz it's not news [22:13] DaemonFC It would be the end of humanity at some point. [22:13] schestowitz the hype is new [22:13] schestowitz the science is very old [22:13] DaemonFC The synths don't need humans around for anything. [22:13] schestowitz it's infantile media hype [22:13] DaemonFC They already exist, they're intelligent enough to make revisions to themselves. [22:13] schestowitz you now have POLITICIANS having whole PANELS on HEY HI [22:13] schestowitz EPO loves the term [22:13] schestowitz and GAFAM [22:13] DaemonFC If the Brotherhood doesn't go in and destroy the Institute now, there won't be another chance to later. [22:14] schestowitz brb, hey hi coffee [22:14] DaemonFC At some point, there really will be AI. [22:14] DaemonFC It doesn't exist right now. [22:14] DaemonFC You can train a program to do some simple tasks, but that's not comparable to a human mind at all. [22:15] DaemonFC You just have a robot fry cook. [22:15] DaemonFC Because it doesn't take anywhere near a human intellect, not even a particularly stupid human, to flip french fries all day. [22:16] DaemonFC And now that you have a robot arm doing it, no human will call in sick whenever they feel like goofing off, walk out because $16 an hour for flipping fries isn't enough. [22:17] DaemonFC This automation was possible 15 or 20 years ago, but it's worth it relative to something else, and that something else is when your labor turns on you and demands all sorts of ridiculous things, to where a robot arm that costs $3000 a month to make french fries is now viable. [22:17] DaemonFC If a human costs less than $3,000 a month to make french fries, apparently, then it's more viable to have a job for a human. [22:18] DaemonFC $3,000 a month is pay and benefits, and $16 an hour with a benefits package that brings it closer to $20 an hour is $9,680 a month. [22:18] DaemonFC Because there are two shifts with a guy making french fries at that labor rate. [22:19] DaemonFC Then you have to consider other variables. [22:19] DaemonFC The government taxes you to make a job for someone. You do not have to pay their social taxes if you have a robot fry cook. [22:20] DaemonFC The government taxes you in case that person becomes unemployed and demands money for up to 6 months while they look for work. [22:20] DaemonFC Not an issue with a robot arm. [22:20] DaemonFC The government says you have to pay OSHA fines if the person is a dumb fuck who gets themselves badly hurt while slinging fries. [22:20] DaemonFC The government will also tax you in case they draw worker's comp. [22:20] DaemonFC None of this is an issue with a goddamned robot arm. [22:21] DaemonFC So really the workers are costing White Castle $11,000 a month to make fries. (Or more.) The robot costs $3,000. [22:21] DaemonFC It's a goddamned bargain! [22:21] DaemonFC Every store will have this in 2 years. [22:22] DaemonFC The only cost for the robot arm is leasing it from the robot company, and it's a package deal. [22:22] DaemonFC If it breaks down, they have to come out and service it without charging you extra. [22:23] DaemonFC So, the Republicans are not wrong with their Facebook meme. [22:23] DaemonFC You wanted $15 an hour, here's your replacement. [22:23] schestowitz [22:17] If a human costs less than $3,000 a month to make french fries, apparently, then it's more viable to have a job for a human. [22:24] schestowitz it is called automation [22:24] schestowitz not hey hi [22:24] DaemonFC And this rant is on topic for once, you know. [22:24] schestowitz robotic, sprogrmms [22:24] schestowitz mechanics [22:24] DaemonFC Yes, I know. THe robot arm is a dumb machine that flips fries back and forth on a timer. [22:24] DaemonFC Being pitched as "AI". [22:24] DaemonFC By some marketing creeps. [22:25] schestowitz yeah [22:25] schestowitz it's about energy too [22:25] schestowitz one large digger now does the work of 15 mean, IIRC [22:25] DaemonFC The social costs are their own issue. [22:25] schestowitz if you dig up tunnels and things [22:25] DaemonFC This is a disaster. [22:25] schestowitz so construction takes a lot less manpower [22:25] DaemonFC We're talking massive unemployment. [22:25] schestowitz just dig up some fossil fuel [22:26] DaemonFC The end result is riots that end with the government being overthrown, most likely. [22:26] DaemonFC When enough people no longer have anything to lose if the government goes under. [22:26] schestowitz btw [22:26] DaemonFC The military doesn't have an army of robots. [22:26] schestowitz you skipped a step [22:26] schestowitz it starts with outsourcing [22:26] schestowitz then offshoring [22:27] schestowitz then automation [22:27] DaemonFC They have your friends and families and they know what is going on too. [22:27] schestowitz in that order [22:27] schestowitz lowering compensation over time [22:27] DaemonFC And when the order comes down to murder people for rioting because things are that horrible. [22:27] DaemonFC I expect mass defections. [22:27] schestowitz in capitalism, the vassal if the labourers [22:27] schestowitz the feudal masters up the chain do no worker [22:27] schestowitz they commandeer the vassals [22:28] DaemonFC No, they enjoy all of the profits with very little work, if any. [22:28] schestowitz when the vassals get replaced by machines the distribution of wealth worsens [22:28] DaemonFC They push an increasing amount of work for less and less pay the further down the ladder you go. [23:55] DaemonFC But in a small town in Indiana, she was dumpster diving for meat. [23:55] DaemonFC And the manager over at the supermarket who put it out in the trash noticed, and he confronted her the next time, and he said. "You know, corporate tells me I'm supposed to pour bleach on this to ruin it so you can't have it.". [23:56] DaemonFC It's worse than putting it in the trash. They're supposed to spoil it with a chemical that would kill you if you ate it! [23:57] DaemonFC But this guy goes, "I'm just going to set this meat here and this bleach over here on that table, and you can just pour the bleach on it and throw it in the trash for me when you're done.". [23:57] DaemonFC And he winked at her. [23:57] DaemonFC And every day he'd take it out and let her run off with it, and told his bosses that he was bleaching it and throwing it away. [23:58] DaemonFC Those are the people that deserve respect. They get told to do something they know is wrong and they won't do it. [23:58] DaemonFC They find ways to sabotage instead of doing wrong. [23:59] DaemonFC schestowitz-TR, What difference does it make to the corporation if she and her kids were eating chicken and ground beef and stuff and them throwing it in the garbage with bleach on it? [23:59] DaemonFC They paid MORE to bleach it than to throw it away! [23:59] DaemonFC This is like those homeless spikes.
