[04:32] DaemonFC[m] So while they have to give you the prescription, they refuse to write down the PD, which they already have. And they say it's because they don't want to be held liable if you get the glasses somewhere else and the PD was wrong and you wreck your car. [04:32] DaemonFC[m] But it's really so they can sell $300-500 pairs of eyeglasses. [04:34] DaemonFC[m] So I asked the optician in the front "Why don't you just tell me?". She goes, "Oh, well, we don't want to be liable if you wreck your car or something and the measurement wasn't right, also we won't know the PD until you buy your glasses from us.". I said, "That machine that was blowing air in my eyes was what gave you the PD in case I bought glasses here, so you have it already.". [04:34] DaemonFC[m] She just walks off. [04:35] DaemonFC[m] They've been getting shittier and shittier every year at the Walmart Vision Center. I used to go in there for an annual "Can I read down to the 20/20 line." thing, and they didn't even charge me for that. [04:36] DaemonFC[m] They had something like what they use down at the DMV to make sure you're good to drive. Then those disappeared and you had to pay for a full exam. Oh well. [04:36] DaemonFC[m] Now you pay for an exam and they won't tell you your PD and make up some bullshit about why that is. [04:36] DaemonFC[m] So you need a ruler or an app. [04:37] DaemonFC[m] Having to make a close guess when Walmart already took a precise measurement and just won't hand it over is pretty shitty. [04:38] DaemonFC[m] In fact, it could throw off a strong prescription to the point where a person actually does drive into a tree due to eye strain because they guessed. [04:42] DaemonFC[m] The employee vision insurance isn't that great, turns out. The eyeglasses are so expensive that you're still crazy if you buy them there. [04:42] DaemonFC[m] Charge 4 times more and give 25% of that back to you as a "benefit" that you have to pay premiums for. [04:43] DaemonFC[m] "You don't have to be crazy to sign up for our 'benefits' but it sure helps." [04:44] DaemonFC[m] Basically the only thing you're really getting if you buy it is an annual basic exam that you pre-paid for. [04:44] DaemonFC[m] They make money because a lot of employees pay the premiums and then forget to ever get their eyes examined at all. [04:44] DaemonFC[m] Cash in the trash. [04:45] DaemonFC[m] When you self-pay you can just go every 2-3 years and more often than not your current prescription only requires a slight tweaking even at that. [04:45] DaemonFC[m] The worst you'll ever be is break-even if you go every year. Then they have it on file and if your glasses break, then you have to pay for an exam somewhere or have them make another pair. [17:15] DaemonFC[m] You'd much rather be charged for the exam than pay 8 times as much per pair of glases. [17:16] DaemonFC[m] Free eye exams are basically like those bars in the late 18th century that would offer a free lunch and then pour salt over it so you'd stay and have to buy something to wash it down with. [17:16] DaemonFC[m] Which is the source of the saying "There's no such thing as a free lunch.". [17:17] DaemonFC[m] They might give you a thing, but then you can only use it with their other thing which will end up costing you a lot more. [17:17] MinceR or just have someone do a gratis exam and make another pair [17:18] DaemonFC[m] Like that cartoon version of Bill Gates saying "Microsoft wants to earn your business. We would never take advantage of an existing monopoly to force you to use our other products. I give you my Word......which comes bundled with my web browser.". [17:18] DaemonFC[m] They were using all of their products to prop up their other products. [17:19] DaemonFC[m] Oh just standardize on IE. Then make sites that only work on it. Applications that need it. Then you can't port your applications to another platform or use the sites on another browser. Oh, did we not mention that our free Internet Explorer browser is the only one that understands NTLM? [17:20] DaemonFC[m] It's included in Windows and it's already loaded whether you use it or not. Your computer will run out of memory if you use a competing product. You're welcome. [17:20] DaemonFC[m] They're doing it again with Microsoft Edge. [17:20] DaemonFC[m] They've created a new Heap model for Windows 10 recently. Others can request it. [17:21] DaemonFC[m] Microsoft knows exactly how it works, so Edge uses a lot less memory on Windows 10 than Firefox or Chrome. When they tried to use it, they don't know the internals of the OS and were hitting performance problems. [17:21] DaemonFC[m] Microsoft was basically like "Oh gee, that sounds rough. Sorry.". [17:22] DaemonFC[m] "We may document how to use it better later on." [17:22] XRevan86 > So far, Windows only opts in certain whitelisted applications [17:22] XRevan86 DaemonFC[m]: What's the argumentation behind that choice? [17:23] DaemonFC[m] Same as the NX bit I suppose. Even now, Windows doesn't FORCE applications to use it. [17:23] DaemonFC[m] Older programs that don't know what it is may behave unpredictably if they're exposed to it. [17:23] DaemonFC[m] So they have to request it. [17:24] XRevan86 DaemonFC[m]: Ah, ye mean the manifest. [17:24] DaemonFC[m] Yes. [17:25] XRevan86 DaemonFC[m]: But it's not a dobrolist if any application can just add a heapType element to its manifest. [17:27] DaemonFC[m] From what I can tell it has a heuristic algorithm that tries to allocate heap more efficiently, but it is somewhat slower because of that. [17:28] DaemonFC[m] So your program might slow down by 7-8%, but end up using 30-35% less RAM. [17:28] DaemonFC[m] For some things the trade-off is definitely worth it. [17:28] DaemonFC[m] You can save a couple GB like that from a web browser. [17:28] DaemonFC[m] Probably nobody notices. All the recent web browsers are fast enough. [17:29] DaemonFC[m] They game the system to run benchmarks faster then run real loads slower because of that. [17:29] DaemonFC[m] Then ZDNet publishes the benchmarks. [17:29] XRevan86 Apparently Microsoft Store applications get SegmentHeap by default. [17:32] DaemonFC[m] Some guy is talking about fake fees at car dealers. [17:33] DaemonFC[m] Sprint (T-Mobile) charges a $2 monthly fee on your bill as a "regulatory recovery surcharge". [17:33] DaemonFC[m] Then they put in fine print that the government doesn't mandate it and it isn't a tax, but they're paying costs of regulation and passing them along to you. [17:36] DaemonFC[m] They're basically pointless to me at this point. [17:41] DaemonFC[m] MinceR: I started taking red yeast rice extract for cholesterol. [17:41] DaemonFC[m] I'm going to get a lipid panel again eventually and I'll just see if this does anything productive at all. [17:41] DaemonFC[m] Some people are saying they started on red yeast rice extract and krill oil, although that would be unwise. [17:42] DaemonFC[m] If there's an effect it would be impossible to tell which one is doing it and by how much. [17:42] DaemonFC[m] Then you could end up throwing your money away on something that isn't helping. And fish oils are expensive. [17:43] techrights-bot #SelfHosting #Videos With Free Formats and Animated Previews, Watermarks/Logos and Translucency http://techrights.org/2021/04/10/ffmpeg-and-self-hosted-videos/ #Techrights #GNU #Linux | Gemini address: gemini://gemini.techrights.org/2021/04/10/ffmpeg-and-self-hosted-videos/ [17:43] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-techrights.org | Self-Hosting Videos With Free Formats and Animated Previews, Watermarks/Logos and Translucency | Techrights [17:44] DaemonFC[m] The one that actually sounds like it has some science behind it is the red yeast rice extract, because it's been studied several times and there are at least 13 different components in it that are known to lower cholesterol. Even then, the government tries to warn people away. [17:44] DaemonFC[m] Back in the late 1990s, the FDA declared that a red yeast rice extract with significant lovastatin content is an "unapproved new drug", even though red yeast rice is where the pharmaceutical industry gets the lovastatin from. [17:45] DaemonFC[m] So basically thanks to the government the pharma jerks take food, extract a drug, declare the food an illegal drug. [17:50] MinceR they probably haven't done clinical tests on red yeast rice extract, only pure lovastatin [17:51] DaemonFC[m] My doctor wanted to see me in a few months. Perhaps I'll ask her to prescribe the lovastatin instead. [17:51] DaemonFC[m] I think folks are just taking the red yeast rice stuff because it's cheap and the doctor visits have never been more expensive in US history. [17:52] DaemonFC[m] So people hit the supplements aisle out of financial pressure to do something when the doctor either won't or will bill them a week's pay every few months to keep an eye on things. [17:53] DaemonFC[m] The good news is that I have to get routine labs done anyway because of psychiatric meds, and that includes lipids, complete blood count, kidney and liver enzyme monitoring, etc. [17:53] MinceR schestowitz: now i remember that in the Chex Quest series, the player uses weapons but they do not kill anyone :> [17:54] DaemonFC[m] So if the rice stuff causes something to suddenly spike I can just discontinue it and the worst that happens is I took it for a few months and then went oh that was a bad idea. [17:55] DaemonFC[m] My cholesterol level is not okay and I don't think that just having the doctor occasionally note that without doing anything is okay either. [17:55] DaemonFC[m] The ones I've seen have been reluctant to prescribe statins. [17:55] DaemonFC[m] They seem to carpet bomb everyone I'm related to with statins though. Oh my god. [17:56] DaemonFC[m] MinceR: The results that some people have noted with red yeast rice have been encouraging. [17:57] DaemonFC[m] I've noted that people have generally said a reduction in total cholesterol of 40-79, and nearly all of that was LDL. [17:57] DaemonFC[m] That's very statin-like. [17:58] DaemonFC[m] The response to Coronavirus has very likely killed at least as many people as have managed to avoid the virus. [17:58] DaemonFC[m] 31% of all Americans eventually die of heart disease. [17:59] DaemonFC[m] Gee, let's shut down all of the gyms and erect fences around open air parks and tell Krispy Kreme to give them all donuts for free every day for the rest of the year after they get the vaccine and are still locked out of physical activities. [17:59] DaemonFC[m] There was one gym in New Jersey that made the news by saying if you don't get the vaccine they'll give you a free one year membership. [18:00] MinceR schestowitz: plus there is at least Doom speedrun category where the player isn't allowed to harm monsters :> [18:00] DaemonFC[m] That increases the difficulty just a bit. [18:00] MinceR indeed [18:00] DaemonFC[m] Especially with Revenants. [18:00] MinceR well, usually [18:01] MinceR sometimes the UV speed record is actually a UV pacifist run :> [18:01] DaemonFC[m] What about that N64 level where there's a Cyberdemon hunting you and it won't let you continue until you kill it? [18:01] DaemonFC[m] Or was that a bonus map? [18:02] DaemonFC[m] Those things are extremely hard to kill. They can take over a dozen direct hits from a BFG9000 iirc and that's the game's superweapon. [18:02] MinceR some levels are thought or known to be impossible on UV pacifist [18:02] MinceR Doom64 is a separate game anyway, with different levels and different monsters :> [18:03] DaemonFC[m] That was actually my favorite console port until Doom 2016 was essentially the same game as on the PC. [18:03] DaemonFC[m] By that point, the Playstation 4 was more than enough to handle the full game. [18:04] MinceR iirc someone could do Doom2 map30 on UV pacifist with TAS (Tool Assisted Speedrun) -- by manipulating the RNG so it spawned Arch-Viles, performing an Arch-Vile jump to the exposed brain of the Icon of Sin and letting the splash damage from additional Arch-Vile attacks destroy the boss after the player's death [18:04] DaemonFC[m] The absolute worst official Doom port was the SNES version. [18:04] MinceR but that's impractical to do without TAS [18:04] DaemonFC[m] The source code for the SNES Doom Engine was released. [18:04] DaemonFC[m] I suppose someone could come along and optimize it enough to maybe add some features back. [18:05] DaemonFC[m] I'm sure that those "I have to write an entirely new engine and get it out by Christmas." projects with one guy working on it is far from optimal. [18:05] DaemonFC[m] It just wasn't a very powerful console and even with the SuperFX-2 chip in the cartridge it couldn't handle Doom. [18:19] DaemonFC[m] MinceR: I'd say that the proof is in the pudding on the vaccines. [18:19] DaemonFC[m] The Coronavirus cases are back with a vengeance but deaths are still going down or staying the same.
