[04:42] DaemonFC Lots of college students looking for part time work. They can get away with it. [04:43] DaemonFC So he just found an apartment in Yorktown, where it was halfway between the Meijer he worked at, and the university. [04:45] DaemonFC That was my idea. I was like "Well, when your lease is up here, why don't you just apply there, because then you'll never be more than a 10 mile drive from work or the university, when you're only going to school 2 days out of the week right now, and you have to go to work five days. [04:45] DaemonFC No days off sucks. [04:46] DaemonFC I used to just do 7 day work weeks because I needed the money that badly while the hours were available. It would go on for a few months and then stop and then go back to 5 days for a while. [04:46] DaemonFC I used the overtime to fill up my savings account like a buffer. [04:47] DaemonFC Illinois has a labor law called ODRISA (One Day Rest In Seven Act) that actually makes this illegal for the employer without written consent from you and a permit from the state. [04:47] DaemonFC But Indiana doesn't. [04:48] DaemonFC I figure the unemployment situation in Illinois would be a much greater disaster if they didn't strongly discourage overtime pay. [04:49] DaemonFC When companies can just schedule you however they want. Hey, people need money. Probably won't even need to force them. [04:49] DaemonFC They can avoid job openings by plugging holes in the schedule with cheap overtime in Indiana. [15:57] DaemonFC schestowitz, I just think it's crazy to take out a 6 year loan on a 2013 car, even if it is a Honda or Toyota. [15:58] DaemonFC Even when it's a really good brand for reliability, your car will be SO OLD when you get done paying it off. [15:58] DaemonFC It won't be long before you have to finance another one. [15:59] DaemonFC I would say never finance a car that's more than three years old and if the interest rate is much over 6-7% don't sign the loan. [15:59] DaemonFC Over 10% on a car is wway too much, but people sign loans at 15-20% or more because they have to get to work. [15:59] DaemonFC Even if they could do better than that. It's nuts. ● Jul 10 [16:00] DaemonFC I mean, like, what's the point of having a car if it's an old pile of junk at 15-20% and you're paying most of what you make at work to the car lot? Eventually it breaks down, you can't pay your rent They're hauling off the car to slap together and sell again, and suing you. [16:01] DaemonFC You're even more incredibly screwed than had you found another way to work, even if it seemed inconvenient or expensive. I told her a few extra mpg at these prices matter. [16:04] DaemonFC You know, it crashed hard last year and I was laughing. $1.50-$1.60 a gallon at one point. Who cares how much of a hog the car is? [16:04] DaemonFC So people were back to buying gas guzzlers. Financing them because hey the station over there says $1.60 this week. Who cares why or for how long? [16:05] DaemonFC Sure it's a 7 year loan, but gas is $1.60 a gallon for the first 8 months, right? [16:06] DaemonFC People are really bad at thinking long term. [17:43] DaemonFC Other than the interest, the sales tax is quite awful too, and of course they just roll that into the loan. [17:43] DaemonFC So you're paying interest on the tax. [17:44] DaemonFC If you get a 10+ year old car, the use tax from the state only amounts to about $20. [21:31] DaemonFC Oh this gets better. [21:31] DaemonFC They want your LinkedIn profile. [21:31] DaemonFC It's an entry level job! [21:32] DaemonFC Does anyone remember when you went to get an entry level job and you jut filled out an application saying your name, address, social security number, and when you could start? [21:33] DaemonFC I would absolutely refuse to go along with something like this to get an entry level job. [21:33] DaemonFC As far as I know they haven't gotten rid of paper job applications. [21:34] DaemonFC Mandy didn't know what getting a job in the US was like, so he had a 'resume" that someone at the community college threw together for him. [21:34] DaemonFC I said, "Oh just toss that to the side, nobody at Walmart cares.". [21:34] DaemonFC And they don't. [21:35] DaemonFC They are neck deep in people who don't do any work or don't show up and get themselves fired that if they stopped to examine what you were doing 10 years ago at a japanese restaurant in another country, I'd be shocked. [21:36] DaemonFC He always comes home and complains that the other people are barely working and it's pushing more responsibilities on him. I said, "Yeah, welcome to America." [21:36] DaemonFC Every job ever. [21:37] DaemonFC I've seen his boss fire a dozen people or more in the past year for low performance, skipping work, and stealing. [21:38] DaemonFC It really picked up after the wage hikes though. Like, at least two thirds of the people fired in the past year have happened in the last 3 months. [21:38] immibis sounds like DaemonFC isn't a fan of modern capitalism either [21:38] DaemonFC You have to pay them $16 an hour, you figure out who is stealing from you and goofing off. [21:38] DaemonFC sounds like DaemonFC isn't a fan of modern capitalism either [21:39] DaemonFC I think that getting a basic job that pays close to minimum wage shouldn't require a cell phone, a linkedin account, and apps. [21:40] immibis then, you are not a fan of modern capitalism. It's all interlinked. [21:40] DaemonFC Lots of employer have a habit of paying just over whatever the minimum wage is. [21:40] DaemonFC Like, they don't want to be completely overt about giving you the middle finger. [21:40] DaemonFC It gives them cover. Like, "We pay more than minimum wage.". [21:41] DaemonFC If the minimum wage is $5.15, they'll pay $7. If it's $7.25, they'll pay $9.50. [21:41] DaemonFC It goes up to $15, they pay $16-17. [21:41] *psydruid has quit (connection closed) [21:42] DaemonFC It's almost like they have a conspiracy going like this so they can push back against future raises by saying "Almost nobody makes minimum wage and you'd be taking raises away from all of these other people!". [21:43] DaemonFC Then they called her into the office and gave her a raise. [21:44] DaemonFC But you can't counter them with a "They have to keep a gap between minimum wage and you or else you get pissed off and leave and go pick groceries for people.". [21:47] DaemonFC Whatever Biden can accomplish to break up those non-compete agreements and otherwise drive up wages is worth doing. I'm wondering, personally, if Congress shouldn't just authorize extended unemployment benefits for a while longer to keep a wage floor going. [21:47] DaemonFC schestowitz, Chase says they're not seeing an uptick in job applications in states that discontinued enhanced unemployment benefits early. [23:46] bagira/fn i need a full 104 pc keyboard [23:46] schestowitz I had 4 faulty HP keyboards in 6 years [23:46] schestowitz one external [23:46] bagira/fn and as lilith mentioned, should also be usable as a weapon [23:47] schestowitz no falls, no liquid spills [23:47] Ariadne ironically, i almost chose Lilith as my name :p [23:47] schestowitz I wish I could CHOOSE a name [23:47] Ariadne you can [23:47] schestowitz I have a dying name [23:47] schestowitz I know no Roys younger than me [23:47] schestowitz maybe one only [23:48] bagira/fn i knew a Roy [23:48] Ariadne 150 to change your name via poll deed in the UK [23:48] schestowitz but in 20 years from now there will be few Roys left [23:48] bagira/fn he was a product owner for an education tech platform [23:48] bagira/fn dude was a dick [23:48] schestowitz so I will have unique name [23:48] schestowitz probably older than me [23:48] bagira/fn my last name is Punches lol your name is fine [23:48] schestowitz it's a alcoholic mix [23:48] *bagira/fn files under not a pen name [23:49] Ariadne okay i have to ask bagira [23:49] Ariadne what is your deal with slackware [23:49] bagira/fn no [23:49] Ariadne i havent been able to figure it out [23:50] Ariadne i remember thumbs from #slackware on DALnet (and then OPN) [23:50] Ariadne and admittedly, he was kind of a dick [23:50] bagira/fn at this point you've shown that your relationships are unstable and that you will pivot from the curious question asker to the campaign defamer, so, only an idiot would share sensitive information with you [23:51] bagira/fn this isn't me being a dick no, it's a "how can you not realize who you are" no [23:51] Ariadne i see [23:51] Ariadne well i'm sad that you think of me in that way [23:51] bagira/fn im more sad that you don't because it means you can't improve yourself [23:52] Ariadne i mean, i think you read way too much into what happened with freenode :D [23:53] bagira/fn character is character [23:54] Ariadne i think my position was fairly transparent that my intention was to publish information about freenode that was factually accurate and unflattering, for the purpose of convincing projects to not depend on freenode [23:54] bagira/fn at the end of all our days on earth we all become john candy. some people liked us, some people didn't, doesn't matter which. what matters is the nature of what you did. your motivators. your impacts. [23:55] Ariadne i didn't go galloping into #fsf taking it over in some sort of horsesona character [23:55] schestowitz activism is important [23:55] Ariadne that was you [23:55] bagira/fn maybe you can convince someone o fthat [23:55] Ariadne :p [23:55] schestowitz freenode was going in the wrong direction [23:55] bagira/fn i still think that was a justified action that drove home an important point [23:55] schestowitz but it took a while to realise the gameplan, with irc.com and all.. [23:55] Ariadne i don't see how you can say "freenode is for FOSS" and then ban the FSF :D [23:56] bagira/fn even now you're misleading [23:56] Ariadne maybe there is some 5D chess shit going on, but i don't get it :D [23:56] bagira/fn there is [23:56] Ariadne did you not forcibly take over #fsf? [23:56] Ariadne i believe there are logs of it :D [23:56] bagira/fn What did I say before it happened? [23:56] Ariadne no idea [23:57] schestowitz he changed nick to red horseman [23:57] Ariadne yeah the horsesona [23:57] schestowitz and then started intimidating people in #fsf [23:57] Ariadne apocalyptic brony persona [23:57] Ariadne or whatever [23:57] Ariadne like MLP, but metal [23:57] schestowitz http://techrights.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/freenode-takes-control-of-fsf-channel.txt [23:57] *tr_guest|82495 (~31c3213a@54n9xgft8g6u2.irc) has joined #techrights [23:57] schestowitz http://techrights.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/fsf-channel-canceled.txt [23:57] schestowitz the 'freenode 9/11, take 2' [23:58] *tr_guest|82495 has quit (Quit: http://www.kiwiirc.com/ - A hand crafted IRC client) [23:58] schestowitz take one was the takeover of about 700 channels [23:58] Ariadne 6/12 never forget [23:58] schestowitz and take 3 was flushing down the freenode DB [23:58] schestowitz 6/1 [23:58] bagira/fn so that part i was not involved in; pity no one remembers that the reason for FSF being cycled was for an explicitly stated reason right before it happened, in all caps even [23:59] schestowitz 9/11: us-led chile coup [23:59] Ariadne https://www.irccloud.com/pastebin/57ZlMdKw/ [23:59] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-Snippet | IRCCloud [23:59] Ariadne h yes [23:59] bagira/fn i mean you can't get larger text on IRC than all caps [23:59] Ariadne ah yes* [23:59] Ariadne oh wtf [23:59] Ariadne why did it only pastebin 2 lines [23:59] Ariadne 2021-06-13 06:48:20TheRedHorsemanNO MORE SMEAR CAMPAIGNS [23:59] Ariadne 2021-06-13 06:48:28TheRedHorsemanYOU OWE IT TO THE COMMUNITIES YOU SERVE [23:59] schestowitz yeah, lol [23:59] schestowitz I remember that
