[23:38] IsambardPrince You get a credit score by being in debt, and by being in debt, you're probably a less stable tenant than someone who is not in debt, yet has no credit score. [23:39] IsambardPrince You can goose your credit score in a number of ways without improving your financial health at all. [23:39] IsambardPrince Like, requesting higher limits on your credit cards will increase your credit score even if you remain indebted to them by the same amount. [23:40] IsambardPrince Disputing all negative items on your file means some of them fall off if the bureau makes a mistake or nobody bothers to work it in 30 days. [23:40] IsambardPrince Waiting a while without applying for credit, getting the apartment, then taking out new loan products and taking the inquiries after you're already approved for the apartment. [23:42] IsambardPrince You have some leeway in what your credit rating is that doesn't improve your financial health at all, but could easily result in the score being 50 or 60 points higher. [23:43] IsambardPrince Ideally before applying for the apartment you pay all of your credit cards down to zero. You can dispute the balance as being incorrect to get them to all update faster, and then you leave the reported balace at zero until you're approved for the apartment. [23:44] IsambardPrince But if you can't, getting higher spending limits will lower the utilization and get you some points anyway.
