[23:40] DaemonFC Which hasn't returned True since Linux 2.6.9.....2004? [23:40] DaemonFC And was taken out because the vendors were putting in all kinds of nonsense that broke. Regardless, 17 years later, it's still there, in uEFI, where it couldn't possibly even be doing anything, and the BIOS CSM is off per Intel, forever, even if you could somehow boot a 2004 kernel. [23:40] DaemonFC These people have "security features". [23:40] XRevan86 DaemonFC: It won't make any difference to Debian if it's secure theatre or not. [23:41] DaemonFC Linux tries to implement ACPI like Windows does. [23:41] XRevan86 Debian doesn't make decisions for what people have in their BIOS. [23:41] DaemonFC It takes the ACPI table that it thinks will work best, and discards the rest of them. [23:42] DaemonFC Sometimes it kernel panics anyway, other times it just has a lot of bugs that look ugly every time you boot and then that gets "Ubuntu Certified" like my laptop did. [23:43] DaemonFC I was actually looking at the WAK_STS patent. [23:43] DaemonFC Yes, there was a patent on that! [23:43] DaemonFC Almost, anyway. [23:43] DaemonFC Compaq tried to patent it in 1997 and then abandoned the patent. [23:44] DaemonFC Then I bought a motherboard in 2008 that had a BIOS that expected that register to be cleared. [23:44] XRevan86 Ariadne: My observation from cinema is that people from the US don't breathe out steam with negative C temperatures. Reptilians confirmed? :) [23:44] DaemonFC Linux didn't clear the register. Garrett ended up writing a patch that did after looking at how Windows Vista handled the situation. [23:45] DaemonFC Meanwhile, AMI changed it so that the BIOS no longer assumed the OS would handle it. [23:45] DaemonFC The patch itself turned out to be trivial. [23:46] DaemonFC Ignoring whitespace and comment (which didn't survive into the merging phase), it only added one line to hwsleep.c [23:46] DaemonFC That's all it takes sometimes to really fuck you up. [23:47] DaemonFC Probably hundreds of thousands of lines to handle ACPI and corner cases by that point. Missing 1 thing. [23:47] DaemonFC Every PC running some version of that BIOS code goes into a coma after S3. [23:48] DaemonFC The way I understand it, the BIOS should never have expected the OS to clear the register. [23:49] DaemonFC I believe it was planned to go down this way because I went testing every version of Windows I could get my hands on. [23:49] DaemonFC The first one that behaved correctly was out over a year and a half before anything with the "bug" even went on sale.
