[01:00]	IsambardPrince	But they are extremely finicky and expensive to repair as they get a bit of age on them.
[01:00]	IsambardPrince	I was driving this huge Chevy Equinox SUV a few months ago as a loaner.
[01:01]	IsambardPrince	It just flies down the road, and it doesn't even have a big engine.
[01:01]	IsambardPrince	I think it was like a 2 liter I4 or something, but they turbocharged it and it's got gasoline direct injection and a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
[01:01]	IsambardPrince	So it just takes off like you wouldn't believe.
[01:02]	IsambardPrince	But people who buy them say they get 3-4 years in and everything's all fucked.
[01:02]	IsambardPrince	Like, especially the CVT which likes to die at around 40,000-50,000 miles.
[01:02]	IsambardPrince	That's why it has a 30,000 mile or two year standard warranty.
[01:03]	IsambardPrince	Things that really shouldn't ever be made of plastic, are plastic, including the oil pan and the oil drain plug itself.
[01:03]	IsambardPrince	I was talking to my mechanic. He said they replace those plastic drain plugs so often that you should just consider them disposable.
[01:04]	IsambardPrince	If you keep using it, eventually it could just fall out and drain all your motor oil on the road while you're driving.
[01:04]	IsambardPrince	So we've reached a real paradox here.
[01:05]	IsambardPrince	Motor oil is better than it's ever been. More refined, more pure, very resistant to heat, doesn't sludge, lots of detergents, formulated to keep emissions systems healthy longer.
[01:05]	IsambardPrince	But it's going in cars that were only designed to last 4-5 years.
[01:06]	IsambardPrince	Those old Detroit monsters that had the huge engines didn't give a FUCK what sort of motor oil you used.
[01:06]	IsambardPrince	When I was young broke kid, I just grabbed the cheapest shit Walmart had to offer.
[01:06]	IsambardPrince	My Corsica took 4 quarts exactly, and a filter, the filter was $1.50, and the four quarts of oil were 77 cents each.
[01:07]	IsambardPrince	The whole oil change cost you $4.58 plus tax.
[01:07]	IsambardPrince	$11 if you had Walmart change it for you.
[01:07]	IsambardPrince	And the car didn't care, as long as you changed it every few thousand miles, you were golden.
[01:08]	IsambardPrince	Your car ran for decades, accumulated 400,000 miles maybe.
[01:08]	IsambardPrince	Now they have these oil change "packages".
[01:08]	IsambardPrince	Oh the packages.
[01:08]	IsambardPrince	Walmart's are $70 plus tax on some cars, the dealer is $130. For a Chevy!
[01:09]	IsambardPrince	Sludge doesn't really come from what oil brand you choose. They're all good enough to avoid sludge, if you change it often enough.
[01:09]	IsambardPrince	Sludge itself is the *sign* of a problem. Flushing it all out doesn't fix where it came from and what caused it.
[01:10]	IsambardPrince	It came from neglect, and it's primarily composed of oil that has suffered thermal failure, dirt that it couldn't suspend anymore, various soot and combustion byproducts, it's acidic, and it's probably picked up metallic shavings because your bearings are all shot.
[01:11]	IsambardPrince	It accumulates over the seals and gaskets, on the inside of the engine, and causes them to fail, but as the sludge settles in, it ironically becomes a new seal and holds back an oil leak.
[01:11]	IsambardPrince	So when you go to flush it out, suddenly you have all these oil leaks.
[01:12]	IsambardPrince	I plan around how oil fails, I don't just use great oil, I use great filters.
[01:13]	IsambardPrince	The ones that get a decent amount of wear particles down to 20 micron and the ones that can hold more contaminants before they get clogged and open the bypass valve.
[01:14]	IsambardPrince	When an oil filter has been in use for so long it's clogged, it has a bypass filter, because the alternative is either the oil filter fails internally and it gets breached and sends pieces of itself along with the oil, or it opens the bypass valve and lets unfiltered oil circulate.
[01:15]	IsambardPrince	I saw a video where a KIA Soul got to 40,000 miles without an oil change, and they opened it up, out comes some stuff....that used to be oil. It's supposed to be dirty, yet liquid at the change interval, but this stuff was solid, it just sort of "plopped" out.
[01:16]	IsambardPrince	For some reason, the dumbest people are always the ones who can get a new car, and then do this.
[01:17]	IsambardPrince	And so after 40,000 miles it was so far gone that it was like "plop plop plop" and most of it was stuck inside the engine.
[01:17]	IsambardPrince	They had to do a crankcase flush, and the car still didn't run right.
[01:18]	IsambardPrince	But then you have Mobil claiming the Oil Change Interval is "20,000 miles" with Mobil 1.
[01:18]	IsambardPrince	Well, if 40,000 is plop plop (fizz fizz, oh what a relief it is!) why would you want to go even half that distance without an oil change?
[01:18]	IsambardPrince	But then in the small print on the same bottle that nobody will read, Mobil's lawyers made them say....
[01:19]	IsambardPrince	"Or one year, whichever comes first. Consult your owner's manual and follow the recommended oil change interval."
[01:19]	IsambardPrince	Okay, so if NO OWNER'S MANUAL says to do 20,000 miles, where did the big 20,000 miles lettering come from?
[01:20]	IsambardPrince	So basically "Never do what we just said you should do."
[01:20]	IsambardPrince	In size 1 font at the bottom.
[01:22]	IsambardPrince	Don't ever listen to the Oil Life Monitor. It's just counting down the number of miles. GM infamously put in an OLM that said "Go 6,000 miles" but their engine consumed so much oil that many of them burned up.
[01:22]	IsambardPrince	So they issued a recall.
[01:22]	IsambardPrince	What did the recall fix? Nothing. They reprogrammed it to say "Oil Change Needed" every 3,000 miles no matter what.
[01:23]	IsambardPrince	All the manufacturers want their cars to be as "hassle free" as possible.
[01:23]	IsambardPrince	So we're seeing 10,000 mile oil changes, nothing about transmission servicing at all, and an engine air filter every 50,000 miles.
[01:24]	IsambardPrince	I change my oil every 3,000 miles, sometimes more often. I service the transmission every 40,000 miles, and I change the air filters every year regardless of miles.
[01:24]	IsambardPrince	GM says change the Dexcool engine coolant every 5 years or 150,000 miles. It starts sludging after 3 years.
[01:25]	IsambardPrince	Change it every 2-3 years, whatever the mileage.
[01:26]	IsambardPrince	Probably some of these "Chevy problems" are just that the owners are slobs like my mother who don't do anything to the car except fill it with the absolute cheapest gas they can find and drag the muffler down the street ("very slowly") and tells the shop "Either weld it or I'll just let it fall off."
[01:27]	IsambardPrince	She actually dragged her muffler down the road all the way to a muffler shop and said if they didn't weld it for $100 it could just fall off and she didn't care.
[01:29]	IsambardPrince	Not having a muffler (or an exhaust pipe, or catalytic converter) is not only illegal, it's dangerous.
[01:29]	IsambardPrince	It can cause exhaust to end up in the cabin with you instead of exiting the back of the car.
[01:30]	IsambardPrince	The catalyst changes photochemical smog contributors and poisonous gases like Carbon Monoxide into things like Carbon Dioxide and water vapor.
