●● IRC: #techrights @ FreeNode: Thursday, March 18, 2021 ●● ● Mar 18 [00:00] DaemonFC[m] Mozilla is taking crumbs at this point after hoping to be a phone platform and an operating system just several years ago. [00:00] DaemonFC[m] There's not a wide array of software to access the web with even on Linux these days. [00:00] DaemonFC[m] It's all some sort of rebranded Chrome. [00:01] DaemonFC[m] They even have to run and bend the knee to Google to get a Google DRM blob license. [00:01] schestowitz__ yes, it is a new problem [00:01] DaemonFC[m] Google now controls who gets Widevine and they won't talk to smaller browser vendors at all. [00:01] schestowitz__ it reminds me of systemd because there are many parallels [00:01] schestowitz__ they say it's free [00:01] schestowitz__ and that it's "Open SOurce" [00:02] DaemonFC[m] It apparently took 8 months for Brave to get a license. [00:02] schestowitz__ (they don't mean free software [00:02] schestowitz__ and there is choice, even if one (plus few more) company leads the way [00:02] schestowitz__ IBM/Red Hat [00:02] schestowitz__ and Google [00:02] schestowitz__ they're always ahead and leave everyone else behind [00:02] schestowitz__ with very large body of code [00:03] schestowitz__ You have mentioned Widevine [00:03] schestowitz__ something that gets around such DRM (Widevine) was banned from GitHub [00:03] schestowitz__ the media did not cover that [00:05] psydroid I clearly see the issues on Debian ARM and GhostBSD x86 [00:05] DaemonFC[m] People are obviously bypassing widevine, otherwise the bittorrent sites wouldn't be full of webrips. [00:06] psydroid it's DRM for those who toe the line and everyone else can go and take a hike [00:06] DaemonFC[m] Even ripping a streaming site looks better, often, because it's all downloaded and your ISP can't say "Oh, he's watching Hulu. I'll just step on the hose and.....splotchy 360p!". [00:07] DaemonFC[m] "Thanks for being a Comcast customer. Hope you have a Comcastic day now!" [00:07] DaemonFC[m] Comcast is so bad that I was rewatching SG-1 with Mandy and they can't even consistently give us 480p Netflix. [00:08] DaemonFC[m] Even though allegedly, we have a speed package that should handle 1080p consistently. [00:08] DaemonFC[m] From 12 feet away on a 55" TV, you really can't tell the difference between 1080p and 4K. [00:08] schestowitz__ but pandemic! [00:08] schestowitz__ the perfect excuse [00:09] DaemonFC[m] They try to oversell. [00:09] DaemonFC[m] There's no difference and your ISP won't give it to you anyway. [00:09] DaemonFC[m] But Netfucks will take your extra money [00:09] DaemonFC[m] Speed packages are like an idiot test. [00:10] DaemonFC[m] They sell you more speed and then throttle everything you were likely to want to do with it. [00:10] DaemonFC[m] The more speed you buy and can't use, the more profit for them. [00:14] schestowitz__ yes, indeed... [00:16] DaemonFC[m] Comcast hasn't changed at all. They were waving those arbitrary data overage fees, but then they announced they were bringing them back and even imposing them in states that didn't have them before. [00:16] DaemonFC[m] But they added 200 GB a month to the limit they set up in 2013. [00:16] DaemonFC[m] How nice of them. [00:17] schestowitz__ what price? [00:17] DaemonFC[m] Same price. You pay a base rate for your speed package. [00:18] DaemonFC[m] Oh, but if you rent their modem for $14 a month and then pay $12 for unlimited data, they'll wave your data cap/overages. [00:18] DaemonFC[m] You can't get unlimited data with a customer owned modem. [00:18] DaemonFC[m] So the only way to get it is give up and pay them $26. [00:19] Ariadne i have unlimited data on starlink [00:19] Ariadne but it occasionally goes down [00:19] DaemonFC[m] You can't just own your modem and pay them the $12, because if you own your modem, you have 1.2 TB per month and then you pay $10 per 50 GB. [00:20] DaemonFC[m] It ensures that really heavy users are stuck leasing equipment at exorbitant fees and then paying the extra $12 a month as well. [00:20] DaemonFC[m] Then they bring you a "free" streaming TV box even if you didn't want it. [00:20] Ariadne the alternative is viasat [00:20] Ariadne which is throttled to 12mbps [00:20] DaemonFC[m] But before you think they've done you a favor, it's because it offers you "premium content". [00:20] Ariadne and you get a 60GB data quota [00:21] Ariadne i am looking forward to cancelling viasat soon [00:21] DaemonFC[m] The ISPs are always looking for more ways to stick it to you. [00:21] DaemonFC[m] It used to be simple. They told you what you'd get. You paid the price they listed. That was the end of it. [00:22] schestowitz__ I struggled with a lot this year [00:22] schestowitz__ even near the main exchange [00:22] schestowitz__ it can still take 2-3 hours to upload a video [00:22] schestowitz__ better than half a day... [00:22] DaemonFC[m] If anything, the pandemic made them worse than ever. [00:22] schestowitz__ yeah [00:22] DaemonFC[m] Now suddenly everyone relies on them or else they can't get meetings and stuff done. [00:22] schestowitz__ because budget isn't going into infra now [00:23] DaemonFC[m] Zoom gobbles up data like it's going out of style. [00:23] schestowitz__ we could barely do voip [00:23] DaemonFC[m] And that's just ONE THING. [00:23] schestowitz__ had to throttle my own link just to help it work [00:23] schestowitz__ earlier we talked about "smart meter" [00:23] DaemonFC[m] Zoom doesn't use efficient compression, schestowitz__ [00:24] schestowitz__ what you said about compensating for people who cannot pay their bills [00:24] DaemonFC[m] I know VOIP is a big pig, but damn. [00:24] schestowitz__ which I had pondered an hour earlier [00:24] *Ariadne has quit (Quit: No Ping reply in 180 seconds.) [00:24] schestowitz__ the gov. won't pay those bills [00:24] schestowitz__ DaemonFC[m]: zoom is outsourcing the fusion [00:24] DaemonFC[m] No, like rent they just say you can't cut anyone off until the disaster is over. [00:24] schestowitz__ participants [00:24] schestowitz__ but it then sucks up and pushed out streams to many [00:24] DaemonFC[m] So the bills pile up and nobody can ever pay it and bankruptcy wave is guaranteed. [00:24] schestowitz__ why jitsimeet is hard to scale [00:25] schestowitz__ you need a beefy center like AWS with high speed network links everywhere [00:25] *Ariadne (~ariadne@2602:fd37:1::86) has joined #techrights [00:25] DaemonFC[m] The disaster phase does largely seem to be over in Illinois. [00:26] schestowitz__ because bailout? [00:26] DaemonFC[m] 10-20 people dead per day. That's shootings in Chicago. They don't close anything for that. [00:26] schestowitz__ there is no re-employment plan [00:26] DaemonFC[m] The state only gets like $8 billion in bailout money. [00:26] DaemonFC[m] That's going to the MLF loan payback. [00:26] schestowitz__ the infra is also weak [00:26] DaemonFC[m] So it's not going to help. The Federal Reserve ended up floating us the money (with interest) and then the entire grant has to pay it back. [00:27] schestowitz__ "start something news" [00:27] schestowitz__ *new [00:27] schestowitz__ ISOC IIRC gave her an award [00:27] schestowitz__ for contributing to the Internet or something [00:27] DaemonFC[m] The Fed kept the state limping along for a year and now the federal government is going into debt to pay that MLF loan. [00:27] DaemonFC[m] So the state did get a federal bailout. [00:28] schestowitz__ without a connection people struggle to find a job even more... [00:28] DaemonFC[m] Other states are using theirs to lower taxes or something. Ours is trying to raise taxes with unemployment triple the usual. [00:28] schestowitz__ though it has been ages since I last heard of someone applying for a tech job [00:29] schestowitz__ where I work we've not hired in years [00:29] DaemonFC[m] The jobs market sucks. Biden's more or less crawled into a hole and disappeared after the inauguration. [00:29] schestowitz__ yeah, exactly! [00:30] schestowitz__ just as my dad and I predicted [00:30] schestowitz__ passing 4 years [00:30] schestowitz__ shaking not much... staying below the radar where possible [00:30] schestowitz__ in terms of tech, they bail out the problematic companies [00:30] schestowitz__ like those responsible for sec breaches [00:30] schestowitz__ it's amazing [00:30] schestowitz__ get cracked, get bailed out [00:31] DaemonFC[m] LOL [00:31] schestowitz__ they could instead buy food for people who are broke [00:31] DaemonFC[m] bbiab [00:31] schestowitz__ kk [00:32] schestowitz__ oh, we are at the front page of LXer now [00:48] schestowitz__ just wrote a poem to my mom, it's her birthday... [18:22] DaemonFC[m] One of them says it's about them trying to rescue Henry Boyd's team from the black hole planet. [18:22] DaemonFC[m] But that would seem to contradict what happened on screen. [18:23] DaemonFC[m] By the time they managed to shut down the stargate, the gravitational lensing from the black hole was already so extreme that it ripped the iris out of the gate and sucked in someone else too. [18:24] DaemonFC[m] Which shouldn't have been possible, I think, because it was apparently an incoming wormhole and the gate only works one way. [18:25] DaemonFC[m] By the time the Aschen get a set of gate addresses from Earth, apparently they dial the black hole planet and Aschen Prime was also destroyed. [18:26] DaemonFC[m] So why would Boyd's team still be standing frozen in time if whatever is going on, on the other side of the gate, is bad enough to suck things in the wrong way through the Stargate. [18:27] DaemonFC[m] In fact, I think it's explained later that the reason a gate remains connected when it's too close to a black hole is because it takes a lot to destroy a gate, and the relative time dilation on the other side creates a paradoxical exception to the 38 minute rule. [18:27] DaemonFC[m] So that gate is not on a planet, as such, because the planet was ripped apart. So the gate address would lead to a stargate that's caught in orbit around a black hole, being sucked in over potentially millions of years from our perspective. [18:28] DaemonFC[m] This seems to be one of those "Just don't think about it." things, I guess. [18:30] DaemonFC[m] However, it established that a gate doesn't need to be on a planet, it just needs to be the closest one to a set of stargate coordinates, within a range of distance of the coordinates. Due to the fact that Apophis had a gate on one of his motherships and it would work if you know where it was in the galaxy, but its address would change based on where it was relative to the other gates in the network. [18:30] DaemonFC[m] Also, that stellar drift was the reason apparently only Abydos and Heliopolis were still reachable from Earth without correcting for stellar drift. [18:32] DaemonFC[m] I do try to think about it even with sci-fi, and that's why I hate Star Trek so much. [18:35] DaemonFC[m] I think I encountered a "Why would the gate bridge between the Pegasus and Milky Way Galaxy need 37 stargates if any stargate in a galaxy can dial any other stargate within a galaxy?" question before and laughed because the answer was so obvious. Most of those gates are not in a galaxy. They span the distance between galaxies, and McKay explained on screen that he had created a macro that just dials the next gate in [18:35] DaemonFC[m] the sequence and forwards the contents of its buffer. [18:37] DaemonFC[m] MinceR: But the black hole episode confused Mandy at first because he has no idea what a black hole does to matter, energy, and time. [18:39] DaemonFC[m] Suffice it to say I had to explain it. If light can't escape one at over 186,000 miles per second, it would probably be a bad idea to get too close. [18:41] DaemonFC[m] But nevertheless, SG-1 is trying to have it both ways. The planet and Boyd's team are both there and essentially trapped in a few frames of time and need rescued from a planet (the book) and the planet was destroyed and if anyone dials the gate, they're really going to wish they hadn't (the show). [18:43] DaemonFC[m] Interestingly, what's actually going on on such a planet brings up the Schrdinger's cat thought experiment. [18:44] DaemonFC[m] Since what would be going on is impossible to observe due to the fact that it would kill you if you tried, both are equally possible until observed (which you can't do). ● Mar 18 [19:03] *inky (~inky@141.136.79.251) has joined #techrights [19:06] techrights-bot #Android Leftovers http://www.tuxmachines.org/node/148961 #Google #Linux #TuxMachines [19:06] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-www.tuxmachines.org | Android Leftovers | Tux Machines [19:07] techrights-bot #NVIDIA 460.67 #Graphics Driver Released with Better Support for Linux 5.11, Bug Fixes http://www.tuxmachines.org/node/148962 #Linux #TuxMachines [19:07] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-www.tuxmachines.org | NVIDIA 460.67 Graphics Driver Released with Better Support for Linux 5.11, Bug Fixes | Tux Machines [19:12] techrights-bot Another #epo scandal: "The members in question participated in a decision which is the subject of a case referred to the Enlarged Board of Appeal: does Art. 2(3) apply anyway?" http://ipkitten.blogspot.com/2021/03/board-of-appeal-in-t180715-continues.html?showComment=1616085507500#c2530306367485093642 similar to http://techrights.org/2019/07/18/g-219-eba-epo/ [19:12] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-ipkitten.blogspot.com | BREAKING: Board of Appeal in T1807/15 continues with ViCo oral proceedings referral - The IPKat [19:12] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-techrights.org | Index: G 2/19 (Enlarged Board of Appeal, EPO) | Techrights [19:14] techrights-bot "The first step in a non-discriminatory US #patent system is to make sure it is available to all Americans without legal limit." https://patentlyo.com/patent/2021/03/idea-act-of-2021.html [19:14] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-patentlyo.com | IDEA Act of 2021 | Patently-O [19:15] techrights-bot "The IP community generously responded" There is no such thing as "IP" and it's not a community, just a greedy occupation in service of the rich/monopolies https://writtendescription.blogspot.com/2021/03/advice-about-patent-bar-for-current-and.html [19:15] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-writtendescription.blogspot.com | Written Description: Advice about the patent bar for current and prospective law students [19:16] techrights-bot The French Connection: #Thales is third industrial giant from France to intervene in #Nokia v. #Daimler standard-essential patent dispute http://www.fosspatents.com/2021/03/the-french-connection-thales-is-third.html #france [19:16] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-www.fosspatents.com | FOSS Patents: The French Connection: Thales is third industrial giant from France to intervene in Nokia v.
