[00:03] DaemonFC Of course, when I went to see which dentists let you book through them, I noticed most were in Chicago and had like aromatherapy and shit going on, so you know what a cleaning must cost there. [00:03] DaemonFC I don't know who decided to have a day spa in the middle of a dentist's office. [00:03] DaemonFC In case it wasn't expensive enough to go to a dentist maybe? [00:04] DaemonFC I noticed a lot of dentists have just stopped taking ANY dental insurance. [00:04] DaemonFC And they charge really high prices. [00:05] DaemonFC I had Dr. Goone (my dentist) quote me on Mandy. Since he didn't accept the Blue Cross PPO plan (or any insurance), he said it would cost about $8,700 to take Mandy to see him, and he recommended finding an in-network dentist instead. [00:05] DaemonFC It's still going to cost about $3,500-$4,000, but that beats the hell out of $8,700. [00:06] DaemonFC There's nothing really wrong with my teeth and it doesn't look like there will be for a while, so getting dental insurance for myself would basically just mean flushing $600 a year down the toilet. [00:07] DaemonFC The last cavity I had was 15 years ago. Actually, 15 years and a month. [00:07] DaemonFC I get my cleanings at a dental school that charges $15. [00:09] DaemonFC That's about the only benefit I'd have gotten had I paid dental premiums for 15 years and a month. So assuming that it costs about $50 a month to get a decent plan, then that's like $9050 in wasted premiums over that time period to get pretty much no benefits. [00:10] DaemonFC It's a better investment to just go to the dental clinic and use an Oral B electric toothbrush that basically removes all of the plaque. [00:10] DaemonFC The manual toothbrushes almost never remove that much plaque. Some of them can do an okay job. [00:11] DaemonFC schestowitz_TR2, They changed the handle so they could introduce new brush heads that are not compatible. [00:12] DaemonFC I bought about 5 years of heads because my last Oral B lasted about 7 years I think. You don't want to get caught not being able to get replacement parts, but you don't want to hoard and have leftovers that don't work with the next product you'll have to buy. [00:13] DaemonFC "Most of Oral-B's other current toothbrushes are more or less the same on the inside. With the iO, though, they have completely revolutionized how the toothbrush works." [00:46] DaemonFC Doubling the price of the toothbrush and the heads makes your teeth extra clean, because the patents only go so far. [00:46] DaemonFC MinceR, I'd probably change to the Amazon Solimo toothbrush myself. [00:47] DaemonFC They use Amazon's older style Oral B compatible heads. [00:47] *fuzzy (~fuzzy@txkdaiuveepza.irc) has joined #techrights [00:47] DaemonFC Actually, the base model of the old style oral B handle and starter kit was only $45. [00:48] DaemonFC The main difference was I think the 1000 doesn't have a pressure sensor, multiple brushing modes, and Bluetooth. [00:48] DaemonFC Other than that, it's exactly the same as the more expensive ones. [00:48] MinceR 18 014007 < DaemonFC> The Terminator brush. [00:49] MinceR once the human is dead, it can't get its teeth filthy again. [00:49] DaemonFC The main thing I like about my 6000 series, which I got from Amazon Warehouse for $70, is that it has some more aggressive brushing modes and the pressure sensor. [00:50] DaemonFC MinceR, The 6000 series is machine phase matter and can turn humans into other Terminators. The 1000 series is just your basic mimetic polyalloy. Weeeeeeak!!!! [00:50] DaemonFC I would make sense that Skynet (Matt Smith) would install itself into the most advanced and dangerous model it had ever conceived of. [00:51] DaemonFC In a war you have weapons, and you have small weapons, medium sized weapons, and big ones. You make relatively few of the big ones, normally. As long as they can patrol an area and kill humans, for the most part it doesn't matter. [00:53] DaemonFC They're not an infiltrator model, they don't have to blend in. [00:55] DaemonFC MinceR, I don't know how a toothbrush needs an app to tell you you're missing some of your teeth with the toothbrush. [00:55] DaemonFC If you brush in quadrants, it's pretty easy to keep track of where you've been and what's next. [00:55] MinceR it's cheaper to run their code on your phone than to put enough hardware in the toothbrush to run it [00:56] DaemonFC Yeah, and they can pass the savings along with a $250 handle that needs a $10 brush every few months. [00:56] DaemonFC :) [00:57] DaemonFC They might as well make the handle a smartphone for what they charge you. [00:57] DaemonFC As far as you're concerned. [21:41] DaemonFC "Nobody I've ever known who has had a VW says they'd ever own another one, and that includes my mom, who had the engine on a new VW Rabbit blow up and strand her in Illinois in 1983, when the thing only had 40,000 miles on it and had been taken care of, and an ex that I dated for about a year in 2013 who couldn't afford to keep his 2009 Jetta on the road because the reliability took a dump when the car was only about 4 years old and it was [21:41] DaemonFC constantly at the mechanics and they never could make the stupid thing work right, and there was a car payment as well." [21:41] DaemonFC "It's no secret that I've always bought and driven late model American cars. They get lousy gas mileage, but they're pretty cheap (relatively speaking) to fix because well up until 2010-ish, they weren't grossly over-designed with finicky modern technology that might save a little gas but wouldn't get you very far. And for some reason, despite the fact that European cars are notoriously unreliable and require oddball knowledge and proprietary [21:41] DaemonFC parts to fix when they constantly break down, they sell for a ridiculous amount of money even as the owner is desperate to hide thousands of dollars of repairs and get out from under it." [21:43] DaemonFC You can absolutely do 10,000 mile oil change intervals with a Buick V6. You need to use a good quality full synthetic oil, and check the level and top off if needed, but the myth that only European cars can have long oil change intervals is....a myth. You can go longer than 10,000 miles if you use Euro Synthetic oil in this engine and a really big oil filter with plenty of filtration media. [21:43] DaemonFC It won't hurt a thing and none of them are in warranty anymore anyway, so it's not like you have to take it in and have them scrutinize what you've been doing like stupid robots looking for a reason to deny your warranty coverage. [21:45] DaemonFC Many people don't bother to do extremely long OCIs with these cars because they don't make sense anyway anymore. [21:45] DaemonFC It costs $13 per quart for the oil I use, and the Euro stuff usually ranges between $16.99 and $18.99 per quart. [21:46] TR News What is AlmaLinux - Key Information and Overview https://bytexd.com/what-is-almalinux/ Source: bytexd [21:46] TR Bot What is AlmaLinux - Key Information and Overview [21:46] DaemonFC That's one of the reasons why doing a proper oil change that won't sludge up a Euro car is like $150, when you can get a "full synthetic" oil change on an American car at a shop for like $50-60. [21:47] DaemonFC The Euro stuff adds about $6 per quart at retail, and they have to put like 7 or 8 quarts in a BMW because they leak and burn so much oil that you have to just figure the owner is a retard and won't check it and you put in like 2-3 extra quarts to sacrifice between oil changes so they won't need to top off. [21:48] DaemonFC You only have to put 4.5 quarts in a Buick 3.8 V6, and most of them don't consume outrageous amounts of oil. They can develop a gasket leak, but you should fix that, not pour oil into it every week or two. [21:49] DaemonFC Unless it's a very costly gasket leak to fix. Some of them had a slight leak from the exhaust manifold gasket, and that's like an $850 job because it's such a pain to get at, which is an unusual exception. [21:49] DaemonFC Most of them never leak very much, so the economics favor adding a little oil now and then. [21:51] DaemonFC The Buick I have was built after GM "improved" the valve cover gaskets on the Impala that were known to leak, so they already had improved gaskets all around from the factory, and many of them simply don't leak like that anymore. [21:51] DaemonFC I was looking around, and they call it the same engine, but it's really not. [21:51] DaemonFC They use metal where the Impala had cheap rubber and plastic. [21:52] DaemonFC It's pretty clear that with the Impala they were trying to hit a price point. [21:52] DaemonFC When you have to cut $13,000 off the MSRP, something's getting sacrificed. [21:53] DaemonFC schestowitz_TR, It's clear that what they make now is absolute garbage. It is not equal to or better than what it's replacing. [21:53] DaemonFC But they notice their customers buy it anyway, so no incentive to improve. [21:53] DaemonFC If anything, they can all collude to go to the shitter together so you have nowhere to turn to. [21:54] DaemonFC Then a slightly rusty fender 15 years in is going to be the least of your worries. [21:54] DaemonFC I look around town and people driving stuff a lot newer than my Buick have severe rust problems. [21:54] DaemonFC Get an $800 car payment and $200 insurance they said. It'll be fun they said! [21:54] DaemonFC No money left to wash it, so they just let it take a salt bath and don't ever go through the car wash. [21:55] DaemonFC schestowitz_TR, This is what drives idiots into the poorhouse. [21:56] DaemonFC They buy a brand new car, pay way too much, and then watch it depreciate. And in general, three years later it's not even worth 40% of what they paid for it. What's going on lately is an aberration, and so people take advantage of it to unload crap at high prices that they don't want to deal with. ● Jun 18 [22:01] Ariadne man i just have a toyota rav4 hybrid and it seems solid enough [22:02] *psydroid2 has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s) [22:20] MinceR 18 223058 < DaemonFC> The T-X anti-Terminator Terminator. [22:40] DaemonFC So you have to make the files a lot smaller than where MP3 sounds good, and to do that you really need to go back to original rips (lossless) and make 128k Opus files out of them. [22:40] DaemonFC You can save something like half the space without compromising anything, vs. ripping to MP3. [22:41] DaemonFC MP3s on an Android phone were really very little trouble with the cheap cheap price of SD card storage. [22:41] DaemonFC But they're cutting corners on the phones now and if you want to store any sizable collection of portable music, you need Opus. [22:43] DaemonFC It's completely over-designed, and not in a good way. [22:44] DaemonFC Most people wouldn't ever look at the specifications. They'd just say "Oh yeah, of course you need to use the highest VBR setting or it'll sound really really bad!". [22:44] DaemonFC So a lot of times the file is more than double the size it needs to be in Opus to sound as good. [22:44] DaemonFC It's a total mess. [22:45] DaemonFC And you can take any codec and dial up the bitrate until it sounds or looks good, if you are okay with using a lot of storage. [22:46] DaemonFC If you give MPEG-4 AVC 4 GB to encode a Blu Ray rip it will look as good as a 2 GB HEVC or AV1 version, but the problem is you've just halved the number of files you can store. [22:47] DaemonFC There's always going to be value in more efficient compressions, and unfortunately a lot of that reasoning is that manufacturers can cut 25 cents off the price to make an Android phone AND Google wants you to subscribe to things. [22:47] DaemonFC With the crashing price of flash storage, we should be talking about phones that fit in your pocket and have a terabyte on them. [22:47] DaemonFC But things are backsliding terribly. [23:10] DaemonFC If you connected it to iTunes, Apple kept flash updating it without asking and then libimobiledevice had to figure it out and you had to wait a while before it worked again, but I never connected it to iTunes, so that didn't affect me. [23:10] DaemonFC Back then you actually had to make some mistake like that to open up a backdoor into your hardware. The iPod didn't have an Internet connection of its own, so for Apple to go digging around fucking it up for you, you had to connect it to iTunes. [23:11] DaemonFC So assuming you didn't, the fact that it ran on proprietary software didn't really matter.
