It can have the additive package depleted to where it can no longer neutralize acids, it can be heavily contaminated with dirt and wear metals from the engine, it can be exposed to higher temperatures than it's made to operate, or high temperatures for too long in total, and it can shear down and lose its viscosity rating.

[08:22]	DaemonFC	But realize that they're buying this stuff hundreds of gallons at a time from a supplier, every week, so there's still refineries that make it.
[08:23]	DaemonFC	Europe and the US have had completely different attitudes about oil changes. Europeans are used to expensive as fuck oil changes and then running the car 25,000 miles.
[08:24]	DaemonFC	Americans just want cheap oil changes and don't mind doing them more often as a result.

[08:24]	DaemonFC	I don't care how well they refine oil for the Europe market or how much detergent and anti-wear additive they use or what kind of filter they have.
[08:26]	DaemonFC	You can't make an engine that doesn't have some blowby and produces no wear metals that eventually clog the filter and saturate the oil, and you can't filter out all the dirt from the environment that's getting sucked in, or the moisture intrusion or the seepage of other fluids and gasoline that end up in the oil.
[08:26]	DaemonFC	So longevity isn't their goal. Some politician just figures you put this in and you don't change it often and who cares about the car because you use less motor oil in theory.
