[02:42] DaemonFC They'll get the car and wonder why the oil's blowing out all over the place, but it won't happen immediately if you drain it all out and refill it with the right amount of oil after you drove it around like that for a couple thousand miles. [09:11] DaemonFC If you go to a higher viscosity oil, if anything the leak will get worse than it was because the oil pressure is higher than normal. [09:12] DaemonFC And how can high mileage versions of oil be a "money grab" if they cost more than the non-high mileage oil from the same brand? Just do a "customer provides oil and filter" oil change. [09:14] DaemonFC They'll charge you about what a conventional oil change is, which is like $25. Still cheaper. [09:15] DaemonFC If they were honest, they'd just do what some dealers do and make High Mileage their bulk oil. [09:15] DaemonFC It won't hurt a new engine. Not at all. If it could hurt a new engine, it wouldn't meet the warranty standards for those manufacturers, which they do. [09:16] DaemonFC The bullshit in the oil industry is that they make non-HM versions that use inferior base oils, lesser additive packs, and so on just to eat more shelf space. [09:17] DaemonFC Some of them are starting to knock it off. Havoline is switching to "Lifelong" and Quaker State seems to be going to an "All Mileage" oil. [09:17] DaemonFC Now they have to do "consumer education" again because we've been trained that high mileage oil is for cars with 75,000 miles on the engine for 23 years. [09:18] DaemonFC They realize they've complicated their own supply chains by making two formulations when the high mileage one would work in any engine. [09:18] DaemonFC So we're moving to the "high mileage" oil being the default and they just don't call it this. [09:19] DaemonFC Almost everyone now drives an older car. [09:19] DaemonFC The average age of a car is 12 years old. When I started driving in 2000 or so, the average car on the road was only 6 years old. [09:20] DaemonFC They didn't cost $80,000 for a decent one, people made more, and there was just less desperation, drugs, and unemployment. [09:21] DaemonFC So you could find a reliable 7 year old vehicle that was not used hard for like $2,000 or so. [09:21] DaemonFC Now you buy a 14 year old car, it's still $7,000 and it's got two warning lights on and needs struts and coolant system work. [09:22] DaemonFC You pay $7,000 and then you see what kind of a mess you're in and how best to prioritize getting it going again, because you'll need it for a while. [09:23] DaemonFC schestowitz, When I heard $175 to replace one TPMS sensor with a low battery at Pep Boys I laughed and said I could buy 4 new Michelins, a lifetime tire plan, and four new sensors from Walmart for $400. [09:27] *DaemonFC gives voice to tessier [09:28] Sompi It may be a head gasket problem if the overflow tank is full :P [09:28] DaemonFC The overflow tank should have some coolant in it. [09:28] DaemonFC I meant up to the fill line. [09:28] Sompi Yes [09:28] Sompi Normally it should suck the fluid back in the radiator when the engine cools [09:29] DaemonFC Right, but there's a cold fill and a hot fill line on the tank. [09:29] DaemonFC You check and adjust when it's cold. [09:29] DaemonFC Then when it's hot, it should be about at the hot line. [09:29] DaemonFC If you constantly have to top off, that's not good. [09:29] Sompi Then it leaks from somewhere else than the head gasket [09:30] DaemonFC For some reason, a lot of mechanics work on the coolant system then leave air in it. It works its way out usually unless it was a lot of air, in which case go back and tell them to bleed and fill it right. [09:30] Sompi In Finland the yearly inspection criteria keep getting more and more strict [09:30] Sompi And it increases the costs [09:30] DaemonFC So whenever they had the system open, I check and add every day until I'm sure it's not drawing more out of the tank. [09:32] Sompi They cost a fortune because the manufacturer needs the approval from officials to produce and sell them [09:32] DaemonFC They got rusted and started clacking whenever I turned. [09:33] Sompi And that official approval costs ~200 - 4000 depending on how many of them is produced [09:33] DaemonFC Also, the cable had already been destroyed. [23:27] DaemonFC "AE 0W-8 and SAE 0W-12 engine oils generally use API Group III and Group IV base stocks paired with high-performance additive packages." [23:28] DaemonFC So just like I use in my Buick but at much lower viscosity? [23:28] DaemonFC I use Group III and Group IV in the Buick. Most any "full synthetic" falls into those categories and most blend both types to achieve the desired performance claims. [23:29] DaemonFC "high performance additive package" [23:29] DaemonFC dexos 1 (GM's standard) already requires higher quality base oils and additive packages than the API Service SN+ or SP, and ILSAC GF-6 standards. [23:30] DaemonFC So every oil that is dexos can also pass the ILSAC GF-6 and API Service SP standards, but you might pass API SP and GF-6 and not pass dexos. [23:31] DaemonFC I'd be skeptical of anything that didn't say dexos on the bottle at this point if I was driving any American car. [23:31] DaemonFC A lot of motor oil companies won't put dexos on the bottle and won't say why and just go "Trust us, it's fantastic." [23:31] DaemonFC But GM says if you don't use dexos, you do not have a warranty if the oil causes sludge or engine damage. [23:32] DaemonFC Interestingly, while all other motor oils that say "dexos" are full synthetics, GM's AC Delco oil is "dexos" but they admit it's a synthetic blend. [23:33] DaemonFC That's what happens when you control the licensing. You can cheat and not let anyone else cheat. [23:33] DaemonFC Oh, Apple wants to say it's UNIX but it can't pass? [23:35] DaemonFC "Q - With the problem of fuel dilution with many direct injected engines, will the viscosities be increased towards the top of the viscosity ratings instead of closer to the bottoms or are the MPGs more important? [23:35] DaemonFC A - API RESPONSE: Fuel dilution is considered a malfunction and would not be a design consideration for engine oil viscosity. Engine oil stay-in-grade performance is evaluated as part of the API Category testing. Engine oils meeting API SP and ILSAC GF-6 should stay in grade for gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines operating as designed." [23:35] DaemonFC But most GDI engines have a fuel dilution problem. Even ones from Honda and Toyota. If they all do it, is it not how they were designed? Weird, huh?" [23:36] DaemonFC Q - Will the maximum Noack limit be changed for ILSAC GF-7? If so, what will the max limit be? [23:36] DaemonFC A - API RESPONSE: The request from ILSAC considers a new procedure and proposes that the Noack test temperature be reduced from 250C to 150C. Considering these proposed changes, the Noack limit could be changed from the GF-6 limit of 15% maximum evaporation loss. However, until the Auto-Oil Advisory Panel (AOAP), the industry group charged with evaluating the request and eventually developing the category, really dives into this request at th [23:36] DaemonFC e technical level, this remains to be determined. [23:36] DaemonFC --- [23:37] DaemonFC So they're going to change the test to redefine what evaporative loss is? [23:38] DaemonFC A - API RESPONSE: ILSAC GF-7 has been requested to include multiple improvements. Among them include developing a replacement for the Sequence VH sludge test, which has been using the same engine since ILSAC GF-4. For this performance test, the engine components are in short supply, and there is a need to update the test procedure to better reflect current engine platforms. [23:38] DaemonFC --- [23:38] DaemonFC I think GF-4 was like 2000 or 2001. [23:38] DaemonFC Are they saying they picked a test engine from only a bit over 20 years ago they can't run down to AutoZone and get parts for anymore? :P [23:40] MinceR i've found a photo of the GF1 [23:40] MinceR https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gravis_GF1.jpg [23:40] TR Bot File:Gravis GF1.jpg - Wikipedia [23:40] DaemonFC "A - PENNZOIL RESPONSE: Pennzoil does not currently produce a motor oil for flat-tappets engines. However, we recommend using Shell Rotella T4, T5 and T6 products which are designed for older, flat tappet engines." [23:40] DaemonFC T6 will work in most diesel trucks. [23:41] DaemonFC "Q - Why are Pennzoil API synthetic oils (Platinum 5W30, Ultra Platinum 5W30) produced at the very low end of viscosity specifications given the well documented issues with oil shear and fuel dilution, which contributes to the oil's viscosity quickly dropping below spec? [23:41] DaemonFC A - PENNZOIL RESPONSE: Inherently, Pennzoil Full Synthetic motor oils have high VI and extreme temperature performance, so this should not be the case. We then use our performance additive package and premium viscosity index improve to extend the performance of our motor oil to help resist shearing and viscosity loss during the drain interval. If you have any concerns, please feel free to send the Pennzoil BITOG account a direct message with details [23:41] DaemonFC on the documented issue and wed be happy to connect you with a technical representative." [23:41] DaemonFC --- [23:41] DaemonFC So that doesn't answer the question. [23:41] DaemonFC They say fuel dilution is the result of a malfunctioning engine. [23:41] DaemonFC Yet most brand new engines are doing it, even from "reputable" manufacturers. [23:42] DaemonFC And then they don't state how their oil holds up under those conditions and further state that they didn't even design planning for that. [23:42] DaemonFC Remind me not to use Pennzoil. [23:42] DaemonFC Unless it's the High Mileage Platinum. [23:43] DaemonFC The High Mileage oils tend to be on the more viscous side of every viscosity grade they come in. [23:43] DaemonFC Essentially so you don't have to use "mystery shit" from the car aisle like "motor honey" to stop oil burning and hope whoever made it doesn't fuck up your engine something terrible. [23:43] DaemonFC MinceR, ^ [23:44] DaemonFC There's an allowable range of actual viscosity for every stated viscosity rating. [23:44] DaemonFC It turns out that there's actually a lot of wiggle room in there. [23:44] DaemonFC There's actually 10w30s that aren't that different than some high mileage 5w30s. [23:46] DaemonFC The thing about multi-viscosity oils is that the further apart the two viscosity numbers are (the winter side and the operating temperature side), the more viscosity index improver additives the oil needs. [23:46] DaemonFC And as the engine runs, it can "shear" the oil by wearing down these viscosity index agents and change the actual viscosity the longer the engine has operated with that oil in it. [23:47] TR News "For your amusement, I will be publishing a mysterious puzzle in serial form over the next days. The first level is up, and further levels will be announced on Antenna as they appear." gemini://gemini.thegonz.net/glog/231219-eindeutigkeit.gmi [23:48] DaemonFC I'd imagine a 0w8 or 0w12 would shear much less than a 0w40 or something under operating conditions in the vehicles it's designed for. [23:48] DaemonFC "As it is, almost no one reports NOACK for the lubricants they sell." [23:48] DaemonFC PQIA does when they pull some off the shelf and test it. [23:49] DaemonFC dexos doesn't allow higher than 13.0, so you know it's not higher than that if it says dexos on the bottle. [23:50] DaemonFC Oil level drops faster initially, then once you top it off it doesn't drop that fast again (in a normal engine) for the rest of the drain cycle. [23:50] DaemonFC That's because even with no burning or leaking, you'll lose some of the initial fill to evaporation as the lighter elements evaporate under high temperatures and the oil is "cooked". [23:50] MinceR https://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/democracy [23:50] TR Bot Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal - Democracy [23:52] DaemonFC Scotty Kilmer crudely demonstrated the difference in cold flow rated between conventional and full synthetic oils of the same viscosity and the conventional poured a low slower even at 40 F. [23:52] DaemonFC But he was pouring it into a jar. When you start your car, it has to go UP into the engine on cold mornings. [23:53] DaemonFC So fast flow is really important because the oil thickening and gravity are both working against you. [23:54] DaemonFC When it drops below 0 F here sometimes I get Low Oil Pressure warning for <1 second and that's why. Really cold oil that doesn't want to flow as fast has to work it's way through the filter and up into the engine. [23:54] DaemonFC I noticed that with a high flow filter with synthetic media and a high mileage full synthetic, you don't see this message until the temperature drops to about -15 F or so. [23:55] DaemonFC Even though I didn't change the viscosity, I improved the flow of the oil, so the car doesn't complain until it gets a fair bit colder yet.
