[19:05]	DaemonFC	They are the Treasury. They can look at anyone's bank accounts. If you get audited for some other reason, you have to turn over your bank statements (or they can just grab them) and the auditor will figure out you had a little interest and add it while you're being audited anyway.
[19:06]	DaemonFC	The reason they don't care about 1099-INTs for <$10 at an institution is because they don't want to create a ridiculous reporting burden for the bank and most people don't have so many financial institutions where this would be the case that it would affect their tax bill by more than a dollar or two.
[19:06]	DaemonFC	People go "Well, if I didn't get a 1099, why should I report it?"
[19:07]	DaemonFC	Most 1099s havea $600 reporting requirement. So if a payer pays you $600 or more that year, they have to give you a 1099, which means the IRS gets one. Great! What happens if they pay you $550 and don't issue a 1099?
[19:08]	DaemonFC	You still have to report the income somewhere and explain it, so it goes under Other Income and with an explaination on an attached sheet.
[19:08]	DaemonFC	IF the IRS were to audit that payer, they may not have been required to issue 1099s, but they do have the information about names and addresses of who they paid.
[19:08]	DaemonFC	It looks bad if the IRS matches this and finds out you didn't report it, or goes over your bank statements and repeatedly finds $500 here and $500 there.
[19:12]	DaemonFC	Now, what is the exception?
[19:12]	DaemonFC	I was preparing mom's tax return and she uses a big bank.
[19:13]	DaemonFC	The big bank paid her like 3 cents interest on her deposit account and there was no 1099-INT of course. So how do you report that?
[19:13]	DaemonFC	You don't. I's under 50 cents. You round up to the nearest whole dollar per 50 cents, or else you round down. So 49 cents or less rounds down to zero.
[19:14]	DaemonFC	You could try putting it into TurboTax, but it would just say you had interest and it was nothing.
[19:15]	DaemonFC	So if you have 50 cents of interest, you have a whole dollar of income for tax purposes.
[19:15]	DaemonFC	$9.58 in interest? You put down $10. $50.52 interest? You put down $51.
[19:15]	DaemonFC	$50.48 is $50.
[19:17]	DaemonFC	1099-INTs are super easy as long as you have a bunch of accounts at the same institution. But what about Treasury Bonds?
[19:18]	DaemonFC	Well, I went ahead and did my taxes before I got my 1099-INT from the Treasury, so I entered their FEIN as it is listed on their site and then entered a separate 1099-INT for each bond that I sold.
