[05:08] DaemonFC I just increased Mandy's 401(k) contributions. [05:08] DaemonFC I realized that with all of this interest coming in, we'll be over the amount for the $1,000 SAVERS credit and get bumped back to $200. [05:09] DaemonFC So I'm leaving the money invested and earning, but performing an aerobraking maneuver through his 401(k). [05:09] DaemonFC That will drag our countable AGI for the year low enough that we get the extra $800 back through the credit. [05:10] DaemonFC And we get to boost his retirement account. [05:11] TR News Newer versions of KDE lets you control window opacity with mouse wheel on the titlebar. Nice. [05:11] phanes that adds up over like 40 years but you could also live like a fucking king if you increase total income [05:12] DaemonFC I have to keep our AGI under $43,500 to get the full value of that credit. [05:13] DaemonFC Which just means a little bit of messing around with the old retirement fund. [05:14] DaemonFC The adjustment I made today should reflect the total amount of extra interest I earn on my investments throughout the year vs. last year. [05:14] DaemonFC That leaves us with about $1,200 of wiggle room. I claimed a bit over $1,000 in Class Action settlements as Other Income last year. [05:16] DaemonFC I might go back and dial up the contribution a little more depending on what I see later on. [05:16] DaemonFC Your goal is to get close but aim low. [05:16] DaemonFC You get as close as possible to what the IRS allows you to earn in AGI while also keeping the credit. [05:16] phanes you'd end up with alot more if you were pulling 250k and dropping 100k a year onto it while you live in a house twice the size with plenty of disposable income [05:17] DaemonFC Well that's the thing. [05:17] DaemonFC If we went over it would only be a couple grand, maybe. [05:17] DaemonFC So at this point, stuff the excess into retirement and give the IRS a $1,000 buzz cut. [05:18] phanes there's a threshold with income curves that after you break it (it's around the 115k mark) everything you make after that becomes just extra money [05:18] phanes so the difference between 200k-250k is way, way bigger than the difference between 60k-110k [05:20] IPFS () Planet Gemini updated. [19:01] DaemonFC "If you have 3 savings accounts and each earned $9.99 cents, you DO NOT REPORT IT-PERIOD!" [19:01] DaemonFC LOL [19:01] DaemonFC That's actually not true. [19:01] DaemonFC If you earn more than $10 total in Interest from a single payer, they have to give you a 1099-INT, which means the IRS got one too. [19:02] AdmFubar https://techcrunch.com/2023/04/20/jailbreak-tricks-discords-new-chatbot-into-sharing-napalm-and-meth-instructions/ [19:02] TR Bot tricks Discord's new chatbot into sharing napalm and meth instructions | TechCrunch [19:02] DaemonFC For example, if you have 10 Savings Accounts at a bank and each one only earned $1 that year, they still issue 1099-INT because the total was $10. [19:02] DaemonFC But there's also no minimum reporting requirement for you. [19:03] DaemonFC What does this mean? While you could have another bank where you earned $9, and that bank wouldn't issue you a 1099-INT, you still have to report the $9 on your 1040 in Interest by adding it to your 1099-INTs. [19:04] DaemonFC Does the IRS know you made $9 in Interest at that bank? Well, they didn't get a 1099-INT, so if you "forget" to report it, that alone probably won't get you in trouble, but... [19:05] DaemonFC They are the Treasury. They can look at anyone's bank accounts. If you get audited for some other reason, you have to turn over your bank statements (or they can just grab them) and the auditor will figure out you had a little interest and add it while you're being audited anyway. [19:06] DaemonFC The reason they don't care about 1099-INTs for <$10 at an institution is because they don't want to create a ridiculous reporting burden for the bank and most people don't have so many financial institutions where this would be the case that it would affect their tax bill by more than a dollar or two. [19:06] DaemonFC People go "Well, if I didn't get a 1099, why should I report it?" [19:07] DaemonFC Most 1099s havea $600 reporting requirement. So if a payer pays you $600 or more that year, they have to give you a 1099, which means the IRS gets one. Great! What happens if they pay you $550 and don't issue a 1099? [19:08] DaemonFC You still have to report the income somewhere and explain it, so it goes under Other Income and with an explaination on an attached sheet. [19:08] DaemonFC IF the IRS were to audit that payer, they may not have been required to issue 1099s, but they do have the information about names and addresses of who they paid. [19:08] DaemonFC It looks bad if the IRS matches this and finds out you didn't report it, or goes over your bank statements and repeatedly finds $500 here and $500 there. [19:12] DaemonFC Now, what is the exception? [19:12] DaemonFC I was preparing mom's tax return and she uses a big bank. [19:13] DaemonFC The big bank paid her like 3 cents interest on her deposit account and there was no 1099-INT of course. So how do you report that? [19:13] DaemonFC You don't. I's under 50 cents. You round up to the nearest whole dollar per 50 cents, or else you round down. So 49 cents or less rounds down to zero. [19:14] DaemonFC You could try putting it into TurboTax, but it would just say you had interest and it was nothing. [19:15] DaemonFC So if you have 50 cents of interest, you have a whole dollar of income for tax purposes. [19:15] DaemonFC $9.58 in interest? You put down $10. $50.52 interest? You put down $51. [19:15] DaemonFC $50.48 is $50. [19:17] DaemonFC 1099-INTs are super easy as long as you have a bunch of accounts at the same institution. But what about Treasury Bonds? [19:18] DaemonFC Well, I went ahead and did my taxes before I got my 1099-INT from the Treasury, so I entered their FEIN as it is listed on their site and then entered a separate 1099-INT for each bond that I sold. [19:18] DaemonFC I had like 6 of them. So as long as the total is accurate, it's fine. Lot of work though. [19:18] *DaemonFC has quit (Quit: Leaving) [19:20] IPFS () Planet Gemini updated.
