[23:37] IsambardPrince While they were going into orbit around the moon, they had to go around the far side of course, and that footage was interesting but while they were going back there before they lost radio contact, one of them is heard saying "Hello moon! [23:38] IsambardPrince Only 12 people in history have smelled this. [23:38] MinceR :) [23:39] IsambardPrince When lunar dust makes contact with oxygen, it oxidizes rapidly, and the astronauts who tracked it in said things like "It smells like someone fired a carbine in here!" [23:39] IsambardPrince The dust gets all over everything, the suits the boots, everything, so you can't help but to bring a bunch of it in with you. [23:40] IsambardPrince It's not like Earth dust, though, of course, it's not just a nuisance. [23:40] IsambardPrince It's dangerous stuff. [23:40] IsambardPrince It's more like small glass shards. [23:40] IsambardPrince And that smell when it oxidizes can actually make you sick. [23:40] IsambardPrince NASA referred to it as "Lunar Hay Fever". [23:41] IsambardPrince MinceR, That episode of Stargate SG-1 with O'Neill hitting golf balls through the Stargate was a direct reference to Apollo 14. [23:42] MinceR :> [23:42] IsambardPrince Alan Shepard smuggled a Wilson 6 iron head (but not the whole club) and two golf balls he wasn't supposed to have. [23:42] IsambardPrince He had it rigged so that he could connect the Wilson 6 iron head to the end of a "stick"-like device that was supposed to go with them. [23:43] IsambardPrince So he set it up and hit two golf balls. [23:43] IsambardPrince Now, the suit was so clumsy that he had to hit the balls one handed. [23:43] MinceR on the moon? [23:43] IsambardPrince A shot like that on Earth would be so fouled up that you'd be lucky if they made it 5-10 feet. [23:43] IsambardPrince Yeah. [23:44] IsambardPrince But the first golf ball he hit went about 25 yards and ended up in a lunar crater, the other one went 40 yards. [23:45] IsambardPrince But thanks to various methods of estimating where they went including using LRO mapping, we know it wwas about 25 and 40 yards. [23:45] IsambardPrince Presumably with a less clunky spacesuit and a proper golf club, he could have hit those things several hundred yards. [23:46] MinceR could he have hit them into orbit around the moon? [23:46] IsambardPrince Gravity would eventually bring it back down. [23:46] IsambardPrince But there's not much gravity there, and no air resistance or wind. [23:47] MinceR "The moon's escape velocity is 2,4 km/s." -- a lot more than i expected [23:47] IsambardPrince Even if an astronaut weren't restricted by a bulky pressurized spacesuit and could swing with absolute maximum force, they'd still be off by a staggering factor of about 25 to 30 vs. escape velocity. [23:48] IsambardPrince That said, a PGA Tour pro hitting a clean shot on the Moon would absolutely crush a drive. Physicists estimate a ball would fly roughly 1.5 miles (about 2,400 meters) and stay airborne for nearly 20 seconds before finally coming back down to land. [23:49] IsambardPrince Or whatever you call airborne when there's no....air. [23:49] IsambardPrince Technically there is an atmosphere, but not truly. [23:50] IsambardPrince There's things like atomic oxygen. Dottie the Asteroid barely had any gravity, But it still had some. Remember that scene where they took the rover and jumped a ravine and landed? It still had enough for that. [23:54] IsambardPrince So a kick in the nuts still wouldn't send you into space. [23:56] IsambardPrince They didn't make it across the ravine from inertia. [23:56] IsambardPrince They did it with the assistance of a big thruster on the back of the rover. [23:58] IsambardPrince Dottie was big enough that its gravity should have been at least a third of the moon's. [23:58] IsambardPrince It was "the size of Texas" which puts it in the same class of objects as Ceres, which is considered a dwarf planet. [23:59] IsambardPrince Had the Armadillo actually attempted a jump like that, in that kind of gravity, thruster or no thruster, it would have fallen straight to the bottom of the ravine. [23:59] IsambardPrince It was not like the Lunar Module with a descent engine. It just had a big thruster on the back.
