DaemonFCMinceR: Mozilla is making upstream changes that are not just going to really hurt SeaMonkey but also Thunderbird.Aug 22 00:02
DaemonFCProbably the worst one is trying to drop the XUL <tree>.Aug 22 00:02
DaemonFCThunderbird and SeaMonkey use it extensively.Aug 22 00:02
*includeals (~includeal@a89-154-197-146.cpe.netcabo.pt) has joined #techrightsAug 22 00:02
DaemonFCThere's also some changes that would require giving up the SeaMonkey Modern theme, and basically the entire theme engine. The only thing that would still work is "Default".Aug 22 00:03
MinceRwhat a surprise.Aug 22 00:04
DaemonFCSo the future of SeaMonkey is that it's going to probably have to cherry pick code from Pale Moon and Waterfox.Aug 22 00:04
DaemonFCThat or just give up and bring in all of Goanna and port the Suite on top of it.Aug 22 00:04
MinceRquestion is, when the last halfway usable "modern" web browser is killed off, will there be anyone to try and maintain a fork on the long termAug 22 00:05
MinceRor we'll just set aside another PC full of malware just to run "modern" web applicationsAug 22 00:05
DaemonFCI think that Borealis Communicator is probably close to what SeaMonkey will have to be.Aug 22 00:05
*includeals has quit (Client Quit)Aug 22 00:05
DaemonFCOne of the 10 SeaMonkey developers, Tobin, was booted out of Pale Moon.Aug 22 00:05
MinceRthis is the first time i hear of Borealis CommunicatorAug 22 00:05
DaemonFCAnd he's ported the Suite over to Goanna, but he says it's too unstable to use routinely. It's just an experiment.Aug 22 00:06
DaemonFCThe SeaMonkey developers consider Pale Moon to be untouchable.Aug 22 00:06
*includeals (~includeal@a89-154-197-146.cpe.netcabo.pt) has joined #techrightsAug 22 00:06
DaemonFCSo right now they're picking code out of later releases of Gecko and also from Waterfox.Aug 22 00:07

DaemonFCMozilla is tossing them from everything.Aug 22 00:09
DaemonFCThe Wiki, Bugzilla, the revision control system....Aug 22 00:09
DaemonFCThey don't want you to be able to use it and they hope SeaMonkey goes ahead and runs out of money and fails with all these added expenses.Aug 22 00:10
DaemonFCAt first, Mozilla's position was that SeaMonkey would just be a continuation of the Mozilla Suite and part of the Mozilla organization.Aug 22 00:11
DaemonFCYou could keep using it if you used the Suite and were happy with it.Aug 22 00:11
DaemonFCThen a few years went by and Mozilla got rid of XulRunner and made Gecko a component of Firefox, and then started destroying XUL itself.Aug 22 00:12
DaemonFCAs part of destroying XUL, they began by just marking off a bunch of the APIs as "internal" and then setting Firefox to multi-process mode, and forcing everyone to use Chrome-style extensions.Aug 22 00:12
DaemonFCThis forced SeaMonkey to fork Gecko.Aug 22 00:13
MinceRthe "modernization" of mozillaAug 22 00:13
DaemonFCMove functionality that was an extension to "internal" so it could use the private XUL stuff.Aug 22 00:13
DaemonFCNow Mozilla is throwing them off the infrastructure and telling them "good luck with that".Aug 22 00:13
MinceRfrom "take back the web" to "our way or the highway"Aug 22 00:14
DaemonFCThey did this part with only about a month's warning, so now there's a mad dash to get everything over somewhere quickly before Mozilla deletes it.Aug 22 00:14
DaemonFCAnd manage the 2.53.18 release.Aug 22 00:14
DaemonFCThe next thing will obviously be that we can't call it Gecko because it's a trademark of VERIZON, which licenses it to MOZILLA.Aug 22 00:15
DaemonFCMozilla doesn't own the Gecko trademark. AOL kept it and was then bought by Verizon.Aug 22 00:15
DaemonFCSo the trademark for Mozilla's Web engine is owned by an evil megacorporation that sells smartphones to people.Aug 22 00:16
MinceRlolAug 22 00:16
DaemonFCAnd Netscape the incorporated company still exists. It was bought by Microsoft to be torn down for patents and then sold to Facebook.Aug 22 00:16
DaemonFCMozilla had to ask AOL for permission to rewrite the Mozilla Public License and move Mozilla's code to that license.Aug 22 00:17
DaemonFCThe original MPLs, 1.0 and 1.1, have a clause that gives Facebook the right to make all of the code proprietary.Aug 22 00:17
DaemonFCBecause it says Netscape can make proprietary versions of the code and Facebook owns NetscapeAug 22 00:18
DaemonFCAfter Blake Ross left Mozilla after starting this idiotic Firefox browser, he landed a job at Facebook.Aug 22 00:19
DaemonFCDave Hyatt, who helped him with that, went to Apple.Aug 22 00:19
DaemonFCMozilla has always tended to be some sort of a springboard to pad a resume so you can go work for GAFAM.Aug 22 00:19
DaemonFCDirectly.Aug 22 00:19

techrights-newsCommon misconception: it takes skills to run GNU/Linux. Reality: it takes skills to run it like advanced users. It doesn't take skills to run it like the typical Microsoft/Apple drone. Nobody mandates command line, it's just that advanced users prefer it for many tasks, where it gets the job done faster. The stereotypes get promoted to discourage users' control over computing.Aug 22 04:01

DaemonFCschestowitz I'm writing more about active content and Tor Browser.Aug 22 22:15
DaemonFC"It seems the Tor Project agrees that WASMs are a special danger that adds a significant amount of attack surface to the browser, beyond what JavaScript alone is capable of, and it's not really that important.Aug 22 22:16
DaemonFCSo I've set my copy of the Tor Browser to the safer setting. It's not what I'd like (static content Web sites), but it's probably the best you can do and have the Web as it is work at all.Aug 22 22:16
DaemonFCThey should move the slider closer to the user interface so the user can dial it up and down faster, and set it to Safest if they want to run silent, run deep for a while, and not take chances on scripts and stuff on .onion sites.Aug 22 22:16
DaemonFCBest practices for .onion sites are to remain accessible to users who can only look at static content.Aug 22 22:16
DaemonFCThe way that people typically get unmasked on Tor is partially "active content" being on in the browser, and partially that the police will set up a site that requires logging in. Aug 22 22:16
DaemonFCThen the court issues a broad warrant that authorizes a "Network Investigative Technique" or a NIT, which is just fancy talk for "You are authorized to attack every user who sets up an account and attempt to plant malware on the machine.""Aug 22 22:16
DaemonFC"Basically, interacting with a site like this adds you to the warrant's scope, so sites that require logging in are a big red flag that "there's a reason why"."Aug 22 22:17
