[21:04]	IsambardPrince	24 MB was lighning fast and was meant to be where all the game except the audio was stored, then they had a separate pool of slower DRAM that was 16 MB intended for audio called ARAM.
[21:04]	IsambardPrince	The ARAM was not directly addressable by the main processor.
[21:14]	IsambardPrince	So Factor 5 had worked on porting their audio driver from their N64 titles and improving it for the Gamecube under a contract with Nintendo.

[21:15]	IsambardPrince	They knew exactly how the console worked and what you had to do to make ARAM addressable.
[21:16]	IsambardPrince	The Gekko CPU didn't have direct access but it could via a custom Paged MMU driver Factor 5 wrote and loaded into main memory as part of the game engine.
[21:16]	IsambardPrince	This still didn't let you use it as main memory, but you could use it as a RAM Drive and essentially a swap area.
[21:17]	IsambardPrince	So they would load things off the Mini Disc that might be needed soon into the ARAM, then they would page it over when it came into view so you didn't look at a Star Destroyer or something and have the game freeze up and stutter while it loaded the Star Destroyer off the Mini Disc.
[21:20]	IsambardPrince	Sequential read speeds of a Mini DVD are usually not a disaster, but when you need to seek to parts of the disc without knowing exactly what you might want, they become one.
[21:22]	IsambardPrince	Part of the Mini DVD format was practical. It made reading from disc faster than the DVD formats used by Xbox and PS2, and it made the Gamecube a lot smaller, but it also served other purposes. Like anti-piracy, because the optical drives consumers had at the time couldn't just dump the ISO.
[21:23]	IsambardPrince	I think the mistake Nintendo made with the Wii was the form factor and part of it was the "Wiimote". I mean, they could have just shipped it as a suped up Gamecube and people would have bought it. It was very similar in hardware. Mostly just faster clock speeds and more generally usable memory pools.
