[00:25] DaemonFC They get away with extrajudicial punishment because "driving is not a right, it's a privilege". [00:25] *tmg1|michelson has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s) [00:25] DaemonFC Even though you need a car to go anywhere, including to work. [00:25] DaemonFC Then if you continue to drive, they pull you over and charge you with a crime, and it all started with an unpaid red light ticket, which was not a crime. [00:26] DaemonFC Illinois has red lights but if you don't pay, they don't go after you in court. They don't add interest to it. They don't even mess with your license or registration or professional certificates. [00:27] DaemonFC They just take it out of your State tax refund until it's paid off. [00:27] DaemonFC So to keep them from doing that, you can go to your HR office and change it so you owe them something at the end of the year and then pay exactly what your State tax bill is. [00:27] DaemonFC Then you won't get a tax refund because you won't have overpaid. [00:28] DaemonFC The "square up" each year means you send them a check for the taxes and nothing else. [00:28] DaemonFC Some men do that to stop the State from grabbing their refund to cover child support or something. Which is atrocious. [00:28] DaemonFC But it prevents them from taking anything to cover the red light camera. [00:29] DaemonFC They put all the red light cameras in black neighborhoods then say they're all about racial justice while you can get flashed four times going down two city blocks and get $800 in tickets going to the grocery store. [09:05] DaemonFC Which part of Snaps is "free software" in any meaningful sense? [09:05] DaemonFC Also, Flatpak is closer to "free software" but it puts everything off in its own little world where the user cannot meaningfully modify it or compile and run their own version. [09:06] DaemonFC So it's "free software" that subverts some very important rights you normally associate with that term. [09:06] DaemonFC Not as bad as Snaps. [09:07] DaemonFC As far as the programs themselves, as soon as you add Flathub to your Debian you'll see Microsoft Edge and hundreds of other proprietary programs in your Discover or GNOME Software or whatever. [09:08] DaemonFC These are not "free software" and it hardly warns the user away from them. There's a red box that says "proprietary" but doesn't even bother to explain to the user why that might be bad. [09:08] DaemonFC It is also not obvious what the user needs to do to hide them unless they use GNOME and then there's a graphical setting option if they care to go look for it. [09:09] DaemonFC In KDE there isn't one and you have to perform a command in the terminal. Then if you want to unmask the proprietary software again, you can't and you need to remove the Flathub remote ignoring all the Flatpaks (with an override) and re-add Flathub again. [09:09] DaemonFC Which, they're making this a process because they want to say you can do it without letting anyone do it. [09:10] DaemonFC If you make it non-obvious or non-default or make the user feel like they're breaking something, it discourages them from changing it to hide those programs. [09:10] DaemonFC There's a lot of good software in Flathub that is really convenient to get at that way, like Yuzu. [09:10] schestowitz Which part of Snaps is "free software" in any meaningful sense? [09:10] schestowitz snaps is proprietary back end [09:10] DaemonFC It updates itself (except for the Switch firmware which I have to bump manually). [09:11] schestowitz only canonical coontrols it [09:11] DaemonFC Yeah, so they don't tell you how Snaps works. [09:11] schestowitz (nobody does) [09:11] schestowitz it's a bit like sigStore [09:11] DaemonFC Fedora has its own Flatpaks. [09:11] schestowitz at the they they want to control it all [09:11] schestowitz centralised like Lets' Enecrypt [09:11] DaemonFC But when you do that, you run into problems. [09:12] DaemonFC Like having to get platforms all over again. [09:12] DaemonFC Which are the same versions as the ones from Flathub sometimes. Firefox is, technically speaking, _mostly_ open source spyware or OSPS. [14:15] TR News Firefox as preloaded or shipped (or downloaded) is undeniably spyware. Well, _how much_ spying? That's up for debate... [14:17] TR News Saying you can make a Firefox that does not spy on the user (LibreWolf) is a bit like arguing in favour of child marriage or incest (or both). Mozilla is acting more like a cult, not a real company, certainly not like a bunch of honest grown-ups. They hired too many rogues from disinformation companies. [14:19] TR News What have GNU/Linux and BSD OSes have to lose by preloading LibreWolf instead of Firefox? Heck, Ubuntu had "abrowser" and Debian had "IceWeasel". It's a webapp runtime, akin to VM, that uses HTTP/S sockets for downstream/upstream. Why would people choose this over applications that run natively (locally, offline)? Fetishism? [14:21] TR News Firefox was already 'reinventing' itself as MEDIA PLAYER when it signed a SOFTWARE PATENT agreement with MPEG-LA over a decade ago. Firefox is NOT a browser, it's a bloated application that can ALSO render actual Web pages. ALSO. [14:24] TR News They said Netscape lost its way when Navigator added Communicator and page composition, but nowadays Firefox is more or less the same. Their built-in non-extensions that you cannot remove are not what _most_ users really needed. They removed RSS features, such as Live Bookmarks, based on 'telemetry' data they got from spyware they installed on people's PCs (it is called "Firefox"). [14:24] TR News The Web is not an information platform, but HTTP can relay some information, e.g. RSS to text files [14:27] TR News Firefox even stopped signalling that a page you are on has an RSS feed (or feeds). Little by little, gradual elimination. This totally seems like something Gulag Inc. asked Mozilla to do and Mitchel, with Andy Rubin's thingie in her mouth, said or mumbled "OK". Not only did Mozilla stop fighting for the open Web. It actively works to break it, speaking/spewing lies from the other side of the mouth. [14:27] TR News Now, without any substance left on offer/sale, half the blog posts from Mozilla are "HEY HI" something, i.e. white noise. Oops, ALLOW noise. [14:30] TR News Thunderbird "development" has become an act of amputation, not development. First they made all the useful extensions incompatible ('obsolete') and now they just strip off useful features from the core too. No "SECURITY" reasons for this! The rendering engine is by FAR your weakest link and it is inherited from the WEBAPP RUNTIME some people call a "Web browser" (Firefox). [14:31] TR News Mozilla won't rest and die until Thunderbird and Firefox are useless, limiting, limited, locked down "APPS" with a hamburger menu with little to be found under it. [22:36] DaemonFC They have a hysterical amount of fine print gotchas. [22:36] DaemonFC Including pH balance issues in the resulting water. [22:36] DaemonFC They claim it does not reduce the pH noticeably unless you attempt to use the filter past the designed lifespan and then the ion-exchange beads start breaking down. [22:37] DaemonFC However, people on Reddit have posted that it does make the water significantly less alkaline even fresh out of the box. [22:37] DaemonFC :) [22:37] DaemonFC Less alkalinity would come from reducing the calcium and magnesium by over 97%, which it does do. [22:38] DaemonFC The problem with that is that these minerals are beneficial to the body and for taste of the water itself. [22:38] DaemonFC That's why people _like_ to drink mineral water! [22:38] DaemonFC The company over-emphasizes TDS without mentioning what those dissolved solids actually are. [22:39] DaemonFC Most of the TDS is calcium and magnesium. [22:40] DaemonFC If you live in an area where it comes out of the faucet at about 180 TDS like I do, you have decent water. You run it through a Brita, it might take it down to 140-150, and that's still fine. Again, most of the reduction are the "large limescale particles" where it's still calcium and magnesium, but it's the larger particles of it, so that's actually good. Right? The water still has enough to make it alkaline but it gets rid of the "chunks" that can [22:40] DaemonFC lead to the majority of "scale" in your appliances. [22:40] *MinceR has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s) [22:41] DaemonFC So right off the bat, a cheap Brita or Pur filter will get rid of 90% of your scale problem without negatively impacting the alkalinity. [23:00] DaemonFC And they deserve to lose a lot of money over this. They've already admitted they broke the law. [23:00] DaemonFC All that remains is to show this to a jury and if they actually apply the law and have a fair trial then IBM will lose. [23:00] qrpnxz Indeed. I hope they pay. I hardly ever want to do business with RedHat now [23:01] DaemonFC This will probably all get consolidated into one federal district court. [23:01] DaemonFC IBM is huge with a lot of affected employees over many States. [23:02] DaemonFC So let's just hope that they get consolidated somewhere where the hearing will a fair one. [23:03] DaemonFC There's plenty of federal judges out there that know what the law is, know what the Constitution says, know what the Supreme Court instructed the lower courts to do, and....just don't care. [23:03] DaemonFC And Illinois has been cursed with a lot of that, even in the Southern District. [23:03] DaemonFC So they make a lot of patently incorrect rulings even when the law and precedent are very clear. [23:04] DaemonFC We recently had a federal court in the SD of Illinois rule that the new "Assault Weapons Ban" is legal. This despite the Supreme Court instructing all lower courts that gun control laws have to be decided based on whether this sort of law has a "long history" and is "deeply rooted in tradition". [23:05] DaemonFC Under that standard, how is a law that isn't even that common in the States going back more than 10 years allowable? [23:06] DaemonFC Nobody can decide now if the Federal Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 would have passed this standard. It was upheld at the time under a lower standard, but it expired in 2004, so nobody is currently harmed by that law because it doesn't exist. [23:06] DaemonFC But the Civil Rights Act is another issue. [23:06] DaemonFC And I think under recent Supreme Court precedent, like the firefighters in Connecticut, that you'd almost have to rule against IBM. [23:07] DaemonFC Let's just hope the judge cares. [23:07] DaemonFC Otherwise this could be long and drawn out, and go to an appeals court that's not necessarily going to be better. [23:09] DaemonFC You know, laws are laws and every two-bit judge out there it seems wants to bend reality to their own will. [23:10] DaemonFC And when you say "Let's just have judges that do what the laws SAY and what the higher courts SAY." then people who believe in this "living document" nonsense and you know, want to "re-interpret" what someone 200+ years ago might have meant if they were capable of seeing the way we live today... [23:11] DaemonFC This lets the legislative process fall apart because it's easier to just throw everything to a court every generation and let them change the meaning of what the word "is" is. [23:11] DaemonFC If Roe v. Wade had never happened, because the plain meaning of the amendments they "applied" doesn't mean that and never did, the process would have played out at the legislative levels. [23:11] DaemonFC At the ballot boxes. [23:12] DaemonFC People would have had a gradual change and we'd have had to pay more attention to our local governments. [23:12] DaemonFC Throwing things to courts leads to violent upheavals in the fabric of society because the legislature doesn't want to do anything controversial and winks at the judges. [23:13] DaemonFC In the case of the Civil Rights Act, it's one of those "crystal clear" things where you just can't be allowed to do what IBM is doing. [23:13] DaemonFC \ [23:14] DaemonFC Yes, the law was passed with the "intent" to get rid of segregated drinking fountains and Whites-only bathrooms, but laws must be applied equally or not at all. [23:15] DaemonFC What IBM is doing is worse than a Whites-only bathroom. [23:16] DaemonFC I think this is what you see when you turn things over on their head and hand the company over to the Harvard MBA. [23:16] DaemonFC The executives at these companies don't ONLY want rid of White people, although they do want that. [23:16] DaemonFC They realize that White people are more likely to be Americans and if they can use diversity as an excuse to purge the Americans they can bring in visa workers more cheaply and touting how diverse IBM is. [23:17] DaemonFC And they can exploit those people horribly by saying work for these terrible wages or we lay you off and you get deported 90 days later. [23:17] DaemonFC Which DOES happen. See Microsoft and Google. [23:18] DaemonFC The answer to a lot of this is pretty simple. We need prevailing wage laws and a fast-lane to permanent resident status even if you came here under a work visa. [23:18] DaemonFC Once that happens, the incentives to do this fall apart mostly unless they do just need some temporary help and it's not an ongoing thing. [23:19] DaemonFC If you have a 180 day job opening and people just want to make some money doing work that's not all that glamorous, then that's what work visas without a path to citizenship should be limited to.
