[18:43] DaemonFC So it turns out they weren't actually "watching" the fireplace and a log fell out and burned the cabin down. [18:43] DaemonFC DETAILS! [18:44] DaemonFC schestowitz_TR2, I was making fun of mom's co-worker buying that Mustang that doesn't run and needs a replacement engine. She paid $12,000. [18:44] DaemonFC I imitated a New Jersey accent and said, "This little honey right here just needs a little TLC! TRANSMISSION, LIGHTS, CHASSIS!". [18:45] DaemonFC I don't know how there's so many complaints about the GM 4t60-e and the upgrade 4t65-e transmissions. [18:45] DaemonFC I've had two 60s and two 65s and have never had a problem with said transmission that didn't shift right. [18:47] DaemonFC If you change the fluids and filters out often enough, you shouldn't have any problems. The problems happen when you let the fluid degrade and turn black and then you panic and flush it out. It turns out that there are these gear shifting packs that operate on the pressure of the transmission fluid, and if they've worn down, then the pressure increase by having bits and pieces of themselves floating around in the old fluid might be all that's [18:47] DaemonFC keeping the thing shifting right. [18:47] DaemonFC You flush the system, it starts shifting wrong, because the pressure between those ring packs goes down a little and it exposes them for what they are. Crap. [18:48] TR News "nyway, yesterday I decided I had too many issues with void linux on my desktop and that it was time to hop again. For the past 3 or so years I have primarily ran Artix linux, an arch derivitive without systemd." gemini://sud0nim.smol.pub/distro-hopping-hell [18:48] schestowitz_TR2 matey: ^ [18:48] schestowitz_TR2 did you see this? [18:48] schestowitz_TR2 yesterday the systemd-free blog wrote about it [18:48] schestowitz_TR2 another non-systemd distro taking the fall [18:48] schestowitz_TR2 obarun [18:49] XRevan86 https://theins.press/en/news/251558 [18:49] TR Bot Another video statement from the forcibly mobilized soldiers of Donetsk: they are now in custody for insubordination [18:49] DaemonFC But even then, if it's just a small amount of wear causing a little slippage, and it's a Ford or GM transmission that uses red fluid, all you have to do a lot of the time to restore the pressure between those rings is fill the system up less one quart, and then replace one quart that would normally be there with a quart of Lucas Transmission Fix. [18:50] TR News "When you have to maintain other people's code, little things can give you a bad feeling. They aren't disasters, but they don't give you confidence in your predecessors." gemini://freeshell.de/gemlog/2022-05-24_Code_smells.gmi [18:50] DaemonFC It's a red fluid with a lot of additives that is extremely thick, and it can blend with the new fluid and force the pressure to go up enough that the transmission starts shifting right again. And then it may continue working perfectly fine for years. [18:50] TR News "Happy World Turtle Day everyone!" gemini://station.martinrue.com/sirwilburthefirst/d2c525ea51824c86a80c94096c42e5e0 [18:50] DaemonFC I'd be willing to bet a lot of people have paid a dirty shop for a rebuild and got Lucas. [18:51] matey ill look at it [18:51] DaemonFC Because the stuff is only about $15 a bottle and the shop can say they rebuilt the thing and charge them thousands and they won't know because it's shifting right again. [18:51] matey gnu/linux is pretty much a done deal [18:51] matey systemd isnt helping [18:52] matey yesterday: gnu/linux [18:52] DaemonFC Corporations are trying to replace GNU quietly. [18:52] matey today: ibm/microsoft [18:52] DaemonFC systemd is not a part of GNU like sysvinit is. sysvinit needed replacing, but GNU has a replacement for it called the GNU Shepherd. [18:52] DaemonFC Their next attack is one against GRUB. [18:53] DaemonFC And Red Hat IBM is already engaging in anti-GRUB FUD for their eventual systemd boot. [18:53] mjg59_ Having written code for grub: grub is used because it works, not because it's good [18:53] DaemonFC Where it's not worth the GPL-infringing investment to replace GNU, it can stay, but they work with Microsoft to weaken the GPL and the FSF. [18:54] DaemonFC They even assaulted both with GNU Nano, a text editor. [18:54] matey having used grub: i used it because it works, not because its good [18:54] mjg59_ grub is a decent part of an operating system in a boot loader [18:54] mjg59_ It's a very emacs thing [18:54] matey i like the iso loader though [18:55] mjg59_ Yeah there's useful functionality there [18:55] matey theres a guy on youtube who got grub working with openbsd [18:55] mjg59_ But it also insists on being OS-agnostic which means you end up with stuff like it wanting to duplicate OS-level disk encryption [18:55] matey unfortunately the best openbsd guy on youtube is obsessed with pepe [18:55] DaemonFC mjg59_, You know I'm going to have to come up with a car analogy here. I like the GM 3800 Buick V6. I recently bought another one. GM cheaped out on the official replacements and designed them wrong. They claimed they got better gas mileage, even though with all the aluminum and plastic, they only weigh 26 pounds less. [18:55] matey and probably not going to win over anyone left of suckless [18:55] DaemonFC They break down all the time and that's the major difference. [18:56] DaemonFC Just like systemd freezes my computers up on shutdown a lot and there are no plans, it seems, to fix this. [18:56] matey But it also insists on being OS-agnostic which means you end up with stuff like it wanting to duplicate OS-level disk encryption <- not a bad idea, but the costs arent great [18:56] mjg59_ matey: Well, it ends up with problems like "The OS added a new feature and now grub can't unlock the disk" [18:56] mjg59_ Because they're not maintained together [18:57] DaemonFC systemd is a huge example of trying to justify something using FUD after it's already there, it's fucking broken, and you're justifying why people have to learn to live with it. [18:57] DaemonFC And that's all it is. [18:57] matey i mean, with a name like "grand unified bootloader" and debian formerly suggesting it was the "universal" os (even using at least 3 kernels) [18:57] DaemonFC Same as the 3.6 V6 GM rolled out in 2010. [18:57] matey youd expect grub to get... like it is [18:57] matey it ends up with problems like "The OS added a new feature and now grub can't unlock the disk" <- yeah, the costs of such an ambition is unforate [18:57] matey unfortunate [18:57] matey as it is, i have no use for grub anymore [18:58] mjg59_ Which is why I think framing GNU as an entire OS is misleading [18:58] matey though i can easily imagine wanting to help someone else with it [18:58] DaemonFC Linux decided to use an older version of the GPL and then not allow any upgrades to the latest version. [18:58] mjg59_ It's never been the full set of integrated components you need [18:58] matey or not wanting to, but sort of wanting to [18:58] matey Which is why I think framing GNU as an entire OS is misleading <- it was always intended as such [18:58] DaemonFC So unfortunate things happen, like new file system handling code needing to exist, just so GRUB can hand things over to the kernel. [18:59] IPFS IPFS downstream 60 minutes average 20.01 k/sec., IPFS upstream 20.66 average k/sec., average swarm size 328.83 [18:59] matey pretending its just a software suite is also misleading [18:59] DaemonFC Thanks to Linux developers being a bag of dicks, you get bloat and file system corruptions that never should have happened. [18:59] matey whats not misleading is to say it will be reduced to that-- because that seems very likely [18:59] DaemonFC Because even looking at their code can create license contamination, even though it is "open source". [18:59] matey i give gnu less than 10 years to collapse ● May 24 [19:00] matey the old guard is gone, the new guard doesnt care [19:00] DaemonFC To this day, Anaconda in Fedora doesn't allow you to have /boot on most of the file systems Linux can be installed on, even though GRUB is compatible, and other distributions allow it. [19:00] matey even former fsf staff (granted my least favourte among them) think its a has-been project [19:00] matey i dont think thats the whole story, but imo the real story is just as bleak [19:00] DaemonFC Red Hat IBM considers those to be use cases it doesn't want to have to test, so you can only boot on like, Ext2/3/4 iirc. [19:01] matey if you throw out all the fake shit, what youre left with is unfortunate [19:01] matey of course i think sabotage was a factor [19:01] matey but while roy agrees there was sabotage (or at least he did) [19:02] matey he seems to enjoy pretending the sabotage was unsuccessful [19:02] DaemonFC Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth. This is not quite correct, but explains things well enough to show why you have a hell of a day in court sometimes. [19:02] matey ibm moves to control gcc, even according to moglen [19:02] matey gnu moves to github-- thats treacherous [19:03] matey even if it all works out, the fact that the new guard sat by and let it happen says enough [19:03] DaemonFC To get my $70 back from Batteries Plus Asshole, I had to write a 20 page long response detailing why everything he said was impossible, including evidence. [19:03] matey i mean when things are bad, and you dont know what to do [19:03] matey the least you can do is say so [19:03] matey but they dont even do that [19:03] DaemonFC It turned into a big sprawling mess that someone at the arbitration department had to read and forward to the Battery Nazi. [19:04] DaemonFC And eventually he gave up because they told him that he lost and if he appealed, he'd lose AGAIN and it would cost him even more. [19:04] matey they totally pretend its all good [19:04] matey that sort of denialism isnt sustainable [19:04] matey it will end the primary goal of the project [19:04] matey which wasnt to make a few utilities [19:05] matey but, where it failed at its meaningful goal, i think there will be a few utilities around for a while. evidenced by the fact that openbsd still hasnt managed to clear those out of the base installation [19:05] matey and its worth mentioning that for a very long time, the primary goal was a success [19:05] matey although people will rewrite history about that [19:05] matey i would say thats already started, but really its gone on for 20 years [19:07] XRevan86 https://nitter.net/JuliaDavisNews/status/1529124042833379330 What a story, Mark. [19:23] matey most people who say that are projecting [19:23] matey granted, if you personally know people who are doing well [19:23] matey and they have advice, MAYBE they have a point [19:23] DaemonFC The notion was that car thieves didn't want to sit in the car they were trying to steal for an hour while they got it to work eventually. [23:40] matey just saying [23:41] DaemonFC schestowitz_TR2, The Brita system actually saves me a lot of money. I realized that the reason I became addicted to soda was because it covered up how bad Indiana tap water tasted, straight up. [23:41] DaemonFC In Illinois, it's at least _better_ out of the tap. Indiana has some infamously bad tap water. [23:42] DaemonFC I switched to one of the new blue Brita filters a couple days ago to try it out. The water tastes pretty good. Mandy still wants bottled waters for some reason. Probably his idiot sister. [23:42] DaemonFC The bottled water doesn't taste as good as the stuff out of the Brita filters. [23:42] DaemonFC The bottled stuff has an off taste to it. [23:42] matey but if he does, it should be called a special self-harm operation [23:43] chicksahoy matey: lol [23:43] DaemonFC The soda companies are being killed. I'd say invest in Clorox, myself. [23:43] DaemonFC They own Brita in the US and they stand to make a lot of money as Coke and Pepsi collapse. [23:44] DaemonFC The German Brita tried to come to the US as Mavea. They introduced those filter cartridges that are, I think, called Maxtra, in the UK. [23:45] DaemonFC Now anyone who doesn't want to toss the system has to get Maxtra filters from Amazon's UK site or something, or buy the Aqua Crest filters that are shaped to fit those, but I doubt they'll keep making them for long. [23:45] matey theres an upside to the fact that lennart will probably never do us that favour [23:45] matey although it isnt worth it [23:45] DaemonFC Not many people bought a Mavea, I guess because there's no brand recognition and they can't say they're the "real Brita" without being sued by Clorox. [23:45] matey because he will most likely go on, he will eventually get to see what the industry does to people like linus torvalds [23:46] matey doesnt matter if youre a good shill or not. 99 times out of 100, youll be replaced [23:46] DaemonFC The interesting thing about the Long Last Brita filters (blue) is that they're a gravity-fed carbon block filter, so they perform well. [23:46] matey and if you dont qo quietly, youll be dragged out [23:46] DaemonFC You can get similar performance (although not longevity) with tightly packed loose activated carbon and ion exchange resin. [23:47] matey but theres an important lesson in that too [23:47] DaemonFC However, the result is usually a disaster for the consumer. [23:47] matey the industry has rights-- it can do what it pleases [23:47] matey it can lie, cheat steal [23:47] DaemonFC Voids tend to form in the carbon and it clogs itself up with air bubbles.
