[06:39] DaemonFC Like anything else. It's a process where only a number of things can go wrong and it'll still even be drinkable. [06:39] DaemonFC Starbucks gets over-roasted beans for their drip coffee, so it's already game over. [06:39] DaemonFC Then to save labor hours, they don't just grind it for you. They grind it for that day. [06:39] DaemonFC So it's exposed to oxygen without even a tight lid. [06:40] DaemonFC Then they put it in what amounts to a commercial Bunn. Not sure what brand drip brewer they use, but anyone can buy a Bunn. [06:40] DaemonFC Then they stick it in a paper cup and hand it to you, for five dollars. [06:40] DaemonFC Whoa. [06:41] DaemonFC It's not better than you can do yourself for like 10 or 15 cents. [06:42] DaemonFC Making drip coffee is not like working on my car where sometimes I don't know what I'm doing or don't have the tools and so I take it somewhere and pay multiples of what the part cost. [06:42] DaemonFC You toss some coffee in a filter, put water in a reservoir and flip a switch. [06:43] DaemonFC Who finds this difficult enough to wait in a drive thru and hand someone $5 whenever they manage to get up there? If you use 1 Tbsp per 6 ounces in a drip maker like the Technivorm Moccamaster, which I do have, it'll be unacceptably weak coffee. So to get the right strength they recommend 2 Tbsp per 6 ounces water. 2. Percolators don't need a filter and if you want to use one to keep grounds out of the thing, you can just punch a hole in a Bunn-style filter with a ball pen and carefully push it down into the [23:20] DaemonFC brew basket to avoid having to buy the more expensive percolator filters. So from a purely economical standpoint, if you're not feeding the thing your good coffee and want to get going in the morning economically with some Folgers, have at it. [23:20] DaemonFC No, it won't ever make "the best" coffee, but with the price of coffee going up up and away due to the inflation lately, there's a case to "save coffee" with a percolator if you're not particular about a perfect 10 on the final product. It's at least as good as some of the cheap auto-drip makers like the ones that underextract a bit or create pockets because they don't use a shower type head. [23:20] DaemonFC At the worst, it's no worse than a French Press in my opinion and tons of people use those. You're literally just heating up boiling water and pouring it in and pushing down on a plunger, and you can't even control some of the bitterness and terpene content by using a paper filter with one of those. [23:20] DaemonFC So is it better, is it worse than other methods? The electric percolator has different strong and weak points. I'd place it squarely over a French Press or 80% of the auto-drip machines out there. And if you're not the best about descaling it and have hard water, it's difficult to plug things up so badly that you just ruin the entire unit, which definitely happens with auto drip. And the auto drip machines require a lot of coffee, so they'll eat through [23:20] DaemonFC your wallet shouting "Feed me, Seymour! Feed me all night long!" [23:20] DaemonFC Plus, I can't commit to just one way of doing anything. So you have to buy descaling powder and mix it and that costs more, and you have to do it every month or two, and if you do use vinegar it'll destroy the cheap plastic seals and gaskets which percolators don't have and get absorbed into all the plastic and rubber crap percolators don't have. Even if you pour in full strength vinegar and perk it to descale a percolator, you won't ruin the [23:24] DaemonFC machine or have it tasting like vinegar for the next two weeks if you just hand wash it afterwards. [23:25] DaemonFC MinceR: Different strengths and weaknesses. [23:25] DaemonFC It's like comparing two machines of any type that do kind of the same thing. [23:26] DaemonFC He complains of bitterness in the electric percolator coffee but he started out by saying he wasn't going to use a paper filter because he didn't want to be unfair to the stovetop one which couldn't use one. [23:26] DaemonFC Then he proceeded to admit the stovetop coffee was horrid and the electric percolator coffee was a lot better. [23:26] DaemonFC With a 1 cent paper filter in it, you improve it a whole lot. [23:27] DaemonFC That's where people get off thinking "Oh God, why did I even waste money on this?" Because they follow the instructions and I've never seen a manual that says "add a paper filter" which you can do. [23:28] DaemonFC This is like taking the $10 engine air filter out of your car and complaining the engine's ruined 50,000 miles later. Like, what did you think would happen? The results without that cheap piece of paper are SO MUCH WORSE. [23:28] DaemonFC The bitterness isn't so much about the temperature as it is about the undesirable compounds you let in without a proper filter. [23:29] DaemonFC And people are so stupid that they make their auto drip coffee terrible by putting in a "permanent filter". [23:29] DaemonFC Those don't do anything except hold most of the grounds back. [23:29] DaemonFC They let in all the crap you don't want as far as taste goes. [23:30] DaemonFC They're also more restrictive so you're back to over-extraction. [23:30] DaemonFC I've seen a lot of expensive auto drips come with one of those stupid things and not mention why you shouldn't use it. [23:31] DaemonFC Canadians don't even deserve to have a country. They should be annexed into the United States so they can have a proper Constitution and we can show them how you make coffee. [23:31] DaemonFC They don't have anything up there except Brandon Lobster and French Presses I think. [23:32] DaemonFC Worst Country Ever. [23:32] DaemonFC Go ahead and ban me from your shit country. [23:32] DaemonFC One of their late night hosts was mocking the US Social Security System. [23:33] DaemonFC He forgot to mention that even if nobody ever fixes it, it will still pay out more money after 2033 than the Canadian one does now. [23:33] DaemonFC The average Social Insurance check in Canada is only about $700 Canadian, I think. I recall reading something like that. [23:33] DaemonFC Here, the average check is about $1,800. [23:33] DaemonFC And that's USD, which are worth more. [23:34] DaemonFC So even if you lopped off 23% of that, it would still be better than Canada. [23:34] DaemonFC Also, the majority of people in the US with a brain in their head saved at least something in a retirement account instead of hoarding unopened boxes from Amazon. [23:35] DaemonFC The people who are going to suffer the most from failing to plan are the people who were not smart enough to save something for themselves and cut their tax bill in the process for many years. [23:36] DaemonFC My mother kept going back and raiding her retirement account over and over again. Paying a $70 flat fee each time to get like $1,000 out. [23:36] DaemonFC Then paying the IRS penalty on it. [23:36] DaemonFC So she could have K-Cups and $200 phone bills. [23:37] DaemonFC Mom: "I just went down to Verizon and got us brand new iPhones." [23:37] DaemonFC Me: "I just looked at my portfolio. It's doing well recently." [23:38] DaemonFC Nobody on her side of the family knows what a dollar is worth. [23:39] DaemonFC When my Aunt (the one that was married to Keith) passed 10 years ago she left over $600,000 each to my cousins through life insurance and her car insurance payout. [23:39] DaemonFC Within 18 months it was gone and they were filing bankruptcy for a third time and fourth time, respectively. [23:40] DaemonFC Each one of them bought expensive new cars for their husbands, who don't work and only live off them and meander about the house. [23:40] DaemonFC The one that got a Ford truck was having trouble with it several years later and took it to some hillbilly out in the sticks. [23:40] DaemonFC He charged them thousands, and then they had to have it towed to a Ford dealer, which said the guy had used stereo wiring to do electrical work under the hood. [23:40] DaemonFC And fried the powertrain control module in the process. [23:41] DaemonFC schestowitz: ^ [23:42] DaemonFC Then the other one got a Mustang and last time I was over there, they couldn't even get in the car because the car battery had died and they forgot where they put the mechanical key. [23:43] DaemonFC MinceR: So they get expensive nice new cars and within several years it's one of Red Green's duct tape experiments rolling down the street. [23:48] DaemonFC It's a blade grinder and a lot of people say don't use that because you'll get chunks of coffee that didn't hit the blades that much and you're better off with a burr grinder. [23:49] DaemonFC Well, I don't want to spend over $100 on a burr grinder (most are WAY more than that). [23:50] DaemonFC So you can shake the blade grinder while it's going and just shake the thing up and down like you're playing with yourself and you won't have any coffee that makes it through without hitting the blades enough times. [23:50] DaemonFC It's stupid, it's a bit more work, but it does work. [23:50] DaemonFC If you use a grinder a lot then you may want a burr grinder because you can just pour the beans into a hopper and hit a button and it all just comes out the right size. [23:51] DaemonFC But for a $11 grinder, the cheap little Mr. Coffee one does work, you just have to shake it while it's going.
